Yes, high gain directional antennas are definitely the “key to range” with this setup. I made a range and penetration video demonstrating how 7km with clean image can easily be achieved using a couple free/cheap DIY helical antennas. (Any high db Crosshair or patches would also work great) Anyway very informative video, neat to see the temperatures at different output powers, this VTX does run hot! What channel was the VTX on during these tests? Cheers!

Your video was brilliant. Currently building two 9 turn and two 3 turn helicals for my HDZero receiver, see if I can get similar range as you on my Talon Pro.

Thanks for this great review Gal, q: signal seemed to have been worse on return and also when it was on shorter distance than on the way out when it was fine(12:10 compared to 09:10), is there any reason for that (local interference or direction of antennas!?)

I world estimate more an antenna issue, When the quad was turning back, at an angle of 90 degree to its flight course ( 10:51), the video is free of interference.

Interesting. With good antennas, I was able to get to 7km on the Whoop VTX with similar quality to your results with the 1W VTX at 3km. I used x2-air on the SMA and x-air antennas on the u.fl connections.

Nice video. Got my HDZero setup ready to go on a Talon Pro when I get time to build it. Hoping the range is going to be better than 4km but hopefully being a bigger platform I can keep the VTX/antenna well away from other electronics or stop it being obscured by the battery etc in the hope that it’ll help with range. I saw someone on KZbin get 7 miles with a Freestyle VTX but he had four helicals strapped to his head.

I've not been a fan of the Fatshark receiver and have decided to wait on a streamline goggle that has HDzero integrated. However, looking back, I probably should have jumped on the $99us deal...🤷‍♂️ As always Gal, awesome content...👍🏻🍻👊🏻

Yep they can make it better for sure - USB-C ports on both TX and RX should become a standard along with a dedicated software for updating the firmware and setting it up.

I'm sure its been mentioned but being on F4 you will have the lowest output from this VTX and should of flown on R1 if you actually wanted to get the longest range.

Nice review! The stock patch antennas are not very good for range, with high gain antennas you can fly 14km without any breakup (30km+ capable) i really enjoy flying this system 🙂

Thank you for your review. It's nice to see more companies push HD FPV. But I have not yet seen anything that beats DJI in video quality. We fly out to 13km with no video breakup when the video just turns black 😂 Not even slight warnings like pixelation, video just cuts 😅 Hope we will see improvements in the DJI system's range in the future

My pleasure. Yes, it can't beat DJI but it has it's advantages. I do think that it's a step towards the right direction and hopefully they will be able to improve the software / hardware and make it better.

you could but the dji goggles don't have HDMI in, so you would need to convert to analog and use that

Man I can't believe you kept going through that static and blank video screens. You must lose a bunch of quads! Or maybe you just had the DJI on a preset course so you didn't need the video at all? Anyway, thanks for your courage to show us the limits of testing this tech.

The DJI video is seperate from the HDZero. Look at the bottom left.

3km is kinda disappointing when I get about 7km on 400mw analog. With triple feed patch or 2km with dipole vtx and omni and patch antennas with the 200mw hdzero vtx. I know that the Rev of the whoop hdzero vs the sharkbyte and with the fw updates the quality has drastically improved reception! But the 1w vtx the rf Amp isn't a single chip it's 2 chips. Diddnt get the module number but relatively sure it's 2 500mw in parallel! Havnt had any bench time with it but idk. Either 1 is for tx and 1 for rx but that makes no sense! And they don't work in series and parallel I don't think 2 500mw in parallel makes 1w. I could be totally wrong

Please don't put hdzero on top of dji 😄 He is quite low on flying and the orientation of shark byte RX hasn't adjusted so that patches can pick up the signal better. I flu 200mW to 2 km with original patches. Vtx is sitting on the top of the dji drone GPS as well. R1 channel selected and so on. I'm getting finally my 1W vtx tomorrow so soon I'll test in on a wing

I cannot get video from my hd zero freestyle vtx. The rx and tx wires should only be for OSD correct? I should be getting video as long as vtx is powered up. When I scan for channel, nothing is found. I have carefully followed updating procedures, but I am getting nothing. Do I have a faulty vtx maybe? Any suggestions would help, thanks.

Good thing that was piggybacking off of a DJI drone, I would have not had a good time with the way that VTX breaks up. I really hope that's something they get better about.

Please don't buy HDZero VTX unless you have the VRX module with you. I checked with HDZero and they don't have an ETA at all for all these out of stock products.
