Definitely take the dive into Kris' music. One of the most impressive writers in the business. Was a boxer and rugby player as a young man. Served in the army and flew helicopters. Was a Rhodes Scholar. I have another artist for you too. Great singer who has been around a long time. Is considered Country, but has and had a very bluesy voice. As a younger guy he too had a serious drinking problem. Along with a couple songwriter friends, he wrote a song about his journey. He was losing his health, his career was in jeopardy and he almost lost his marriage too. He tried programs several times to no avail, and then one day somehow got inspired to turn his life over to the Higher Power. The song is called Wine Into Water. I am leaving a link to a live performance. It's from a TV show called Country Family Reunion. All of the people sitting and listening are older country singers, writers and musicians. Great song and he does a great job on it. Glad you found your way! Hope you enjoy this one. Stay safe and well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIbLq6CFid2kbKc

Mr. Kristofferson is a much loved American poet and songwriter, vocalist and entertainer. In addition to the many songs he has written, many have been about recovery from alcoholism. He was born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1936 and was a Rhodes Scholar (awarded in 1958). Although acclaimed by many for his acting, some will disagree. My opinion, his best performance was in the 1958 movie “Lone Star”, starring Chris Cooper and the late Elizabeth Pena. Lone Star remains as current a social commentary on our Texas border as the day it was written. I am a 83-year-old Texas woman, in recovery, who has followed Mr. Kristofferson his whole career. There will never be another like him.

Did you ever see "The Sailor Who Fell With Grace From the Sea". Written by a man who ritually eviscerated himself prior to a supporter decapitating him, so a story about as depressing as this song. Actually a brilliant piece of literature made into a very good movie. Kristofferson was great.

This song turned me on to Kris Kristofferson's writing. I first heard Johnny Cash's version. Kris finally stopped drinking after the movie, "A Star is Born" In the beginning his songs were about the lonely songwriter he was, sadly justifying substance abuse among his peers. I simply loved his emotion and language. He's studied at Oxford before quitting teaching at West Point, so he knew his way around William Blake and many ports. Still love his delivery of his own songs, and his gift of turning his fans on to John Prine and his songwriting. Thanks for your knowledgeable reaction! ❤

You'll have words for the things you need to say when you're ready. I'm proud of you. On to Kris... Kris Kristofferson wrote and performed this amazing song. You should check out another song he wrote that was incredibly famous called "Why Me Lord". It was written based on his own personal experience, which makes the song have a far deeper meaning and beauty, I feel. A friend of his talked him into going to church with her one day, and he went. Next thing he knew he found himself going up to the alter. "Why Me Lord" was a result of this profound experience. There's an interview out there somewhere explain this as well. You make sure to be good to yourself... peace to you. Link to the story in his words and the song. "Kristofferson, a son and grandson of military officers, joined the U.S. Army in 1960, becoming a U.S. Army Ranger and learning to fly helicopters while stationed in what was then West Germany. His studies in literature and poetry prompted an interest in songwriting, and, while he was in the army, he put together a band." I never considered Kris a great vocalist, but his music draws me from time to time.

Kris wrote this song for Johnny Cash. He had some difficulty in getting an appointment to give it to Johnny. He eventually flew a helicopter to Johnny's property to hand deliver it. Johnny had a huge hit with it, then Kris recorded it himself, later on.
@TheLenyonАй бұрын
I don't think the song was written for Cash, although John said when he first read the words he felt like he had written himself...
@halidenenberg1449Ай бұрын
Actually, while Kris Kristofferson wrote it, Ray Stevens recorded and released it first in 1969. Johnny Cash released it in 1970.

Kris was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam; so when he "flew a helicopter," it means that he actually piloted the helicopter himself and landed it on Johnny's yard. Johnny said that if someone would do that, that he could at least listen to their song. Kris also has a degree from Oxford University in England and was an actor as well. He now suffers from Lyme disease and doesn't perform anymore.
@darrinlindseyАй бұрын
@@hollyjoann Why did you write this as a reply to my comment? I didn't say anything about Kristofferson riding in a helicopter! I said that HE FLEW a helicopter to Johnny's property.
@hollyjoannАй бұрын
@@darrinlindseyIt's called "reiterating." I restated what you said in order to emphasize the cool fact that he was a helicopter pilot and then I expounded on that information with more interesting facts. Reiterating is also done to make sure that the audience or reader understands, and didn't miss, what was already said.

Kris Kristofferson was also an actor and the scenes in that video montage are taken from some of the films he starred in, like Heaven's Gate and A Star is Born. Heaven's Gate bombed at the box office in 1980 and that pretty much ended his career as a leading actor. I didn't see the film back when I was young, but I did watch the 2012 restoration and found it quite good, long, but good, two films in one actually.

Apart from his music, he became a very good actor. Many testimonies to him being a really nice and good guy.

You are correct about Kris Kristofferson. He wrote me & Bobby Mcgee & he dated Janis Joplin. But he dousnt just have more songs that speak a powerful msg, in his life & career his actions also speak the same msg! He has lived a amazing life!! But he has always showed true courage & honor!! In times of other entertainers standing for a couse that they believed in but they stood on the side that went against the power & it seemed like all the powerful people of the industry was trying to cancel them, Kris took a stand beside them! When he didn't have too! When it would have been easier for him to simply stay quiet, he spoke out & stood by their side!! Somtimes literally in front of a booing crowd!! He walked out in front of a booing crowd to stand by shonay Oconer. When the Dixie chick's spoke out politically against what mainstream country wanted, Kris stood by their side while people tried to end their career! He is a true one!!
