Kris Kristofferson had a very interesting life. He was a Rhodes Scholar and a Captain in the army, where he flew helicopters. The story is he landed a helicopter on Johnny Cash's lawn and came out with a beer in one hand and songs he had written in the other. This got Johnny's attention, and he recorded Sunday Morning Coming Down. Kris won Song of the Year at the CMA's. He wrote a number of songs for other people and also recorded music himself. He was a member of the supergroup The Highwaymen, which consisted of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. He also was an actor. Barbra Streisand chose him to star with her in the 76 movie A Star is Born. It's my favorite version of the movie. Barbra Streisand wrote a beautiful tribute to Kristofferson. My dad would turn off the lights in our living room after we went to bed, and put Kris Kristofferson's album The Silver Tongye Devil and I on our very large console stereo (70s stereos were a large wood console statement piece that took up one wall) and listen in the dark with a glass of bourbon. I still listen to that album and many memories come back. Kristofferson songs are small stories.

I started listening to Kris in 1971-73. I never thought him a country singer but rather a singer songwriter. He seemed to individualistic for that. Like Dylan.

This shows up in a fair amount of lists as one of the top five country songs of all time. Sometimes it’s n the number one spot. This guy lived life and knew how to write. So multifaceted. Glad he is getting a spot here. Wasn’t too bad lookin’ either.
@vickiebutcher1161Ай бұрын
The beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad so I had one more for desserts, are some of my favorite lyrics. You can tell by the way he sang the song that he lived the song. when I was a little girl, I ran around singing this song all the time. it drove my mother crazy, but my dad just shook his head and said, sing it girl.

This guy. He was also the number one movie star in the U.S. for a time. Saw him in concert with his wife at the time, Rita Coolidge of Mad Dogs and Englishmen (Joe Cocker, Leon Russel) Tour. She was a big star on her own. He was compelling no matter what he did. Him, Willie,Waylon, formed The Highwaymen and tore up the charts in the 80's. Diagnosed with dementia years ago, turned out to be Lyme Disease. Big creative fun life.

Even up until the 70s Sunday Mornings were DEAD, nothing opened, towns were closed, families ate together, prayed together, unless you were in NY/LA/Chicago. So, the Sunday Morning coming down reminded him of his youth, his family, and here he was a lonely man, on drugs booze whatever, and it made him long for his yesteryears/youth/family.

Thanks for the music,the words , and your beautiful vibe when we needed😊 it. RIP Kris . From his website - He was an Oxford scholar, a defensive back, a bartender, a Golden Gloves boxer, a gandy dancer, a forest-fighter, a road crew member, and an Army Ranger who flew helicopters. He was a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a Casanova, and a family man. He was almost a teacher at West Point, though he gave that up to become a Nashville songwriting bum. The part he left out Kristofferson, under pressure from his family, joined the U.S. Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant, attaining the rank of captain. He became a helicopter pilot after receiving flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He also completed Ranger School.During the early 1960s, he was stationed in West Germany as a member of the 8th Infantry Division.During this time, he resumed his music career and formed a band. In 1965, after his tour in West Germany ended, Kristofferson was given an assignment to teach English literature at West Point.Instead, he decided to leave the Army and pursue songwriting. His family disowned him because of his career decision; sources are unclear on whether they reconciled ,They saw it as a rejection of everything they stood for . He walked his own path when he could have gone down the easier road of conservatives , but his principles wouldn’t let him. Kristofferson stood beside many artists and causes that were vilified by the establishment

See I usually prefer the songwriter's version - they interpret their own lyrics as they were meant to be. Not always the same from others. There are many good versions of his songs out there though. Saw him live 4 times solo and once with The Highwaymen - no egos no crap - just pure talent onstage enjoying each others company and playing each others songs.

Kris wrote some of the greatest country flavored songs of his era, but he never really found that success as an artist. A wonderful way to listen to a dozen so of his best songs is to listen to the album Willie Nelson Sings Kris Kristofferson. Willies' performance with his Family band, really brings these songs to life. Plenty of heart-felt harmonica by Mickey Raphael help paint a portrait of someone just trying to find his way through a troubled world.

Well, depression and Kristofferson, those two can't go together. He's been through a lot, that's true, but he never sat down complaining about it. He was a fighter, he had a spine. And even in his darkest songs he tells you "Yes, I've been there, but I survived and so can you". He was a tough guy, who was never afraid of telling the truth. Sometimes that truth hit you like a fist (Under the Gun), sometimes so vulnerable (Why me, Lord). But always honest. He was not just a country singer, he was one of the best songwriters ever and a very good actor, too. Like "Convoy" in the 70s, up to "Blade". May he rest in peace.

Kristofferson debut album is actually really good. It features most of his most famous songs, including "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "For The Good Times", "Help Me Make It Through The Night", and "Me and Bobby McGee". And Heaven's Gate was actually a pretty good film, at least the cleaned up version I saw fifteen years ago. It flopped at the box office in 1980 and took Kristofferson's acting career with it, but he is actually really good in it. The problem was that it's actually two movies in one, with the first half a love story and the second half an old fashioned Western. But the studios didn't know what to do with it, so they trashed it in the edit and then collected the insurance on it when it flopped as if they were arsonists.

On Kris's vocals, this was 1970. A songwriter had to have a really, what you might call, 'traditionally' great voice or they were encouraged to write for other artists to make it in Pop Music. Bob Dylan's early hits were all by people covering his songs. Neil Diamond maybe broke that way of thinking. He had to be virtually forced to sing his own songs. The '70s became known as the Singer/Songwriter era where writers started doing their own material. Carol King had been a very successful songwriter and exploded as an artist in the '70s. James Taylor, Jim Croce, Elton John... were all artists in this era.
