It goes to logic that people who live in changing seasons will need more clothes, hence our closets must accommodate for drastic weather fluctuations. We need boots for shoveling snow as well as dressy boots for evening wear. We need summer shoes, sandals, gardening shoes, workout sneakers, dressy shoes, casual comfortable shoes, waterproof shoes for torrential downpours, etc etc Our closets must have winter coats and all the accessories (gloves, scarves, hats). We also need rain jackets, and lightweight coats for autumn and spring. The list goes on and on. That is exactly how my closets get overfilled. It’s not that I don’t wear these item because I do, they sit quietly taking up space in my closets until their season rolls back around.

I live in a drastic climate too. However, I’ve simplified my shoe wardrobe. Once I noticed the only thing I got complemented on by both men and women, were colorful tennis shoes (trainers/running shoes/high tops), I decided I was ridiculous for worrying about the rest of my shoes. Beside several pairs of colorful, fun tennis shoes and high tops, I have a pair of snow boots, two pairs of Clark leather shoes for work, 3 pairs of sandals, two pairs of ballet flats, and two pairs of dress shoes.

I once had a beautiful wool tweed jacket that I had sewn myself. When it was no longer stylish, I stopped wearing it thinking that it would "come back" some day. Well, it eventually "came back" (sort of). When I went up to the attic to retrieve it, I tried it on. It felt like a suit of armor. Although such a jacket had become stylish again, fabrics had changed and were much more lightweight while offering the same warmth. I was not as enamored of the old jacket as I thought I'd be. It was put on the giveaway pile. There's no resurrecting the past.

What helped me was to actually go out wearing pieces that I've been hoarding for years. You will soon know if you feel good in it or not as you may feel that its not as nice on as it was in your imagination. When you catch that glimpse of yourself in the mirror in public sometimes you can feel horrified. Some of my stuff was faded and scruffy but I didn't notice as I only wore it in the house.

I discovered this myself in the last month or so. I wore a skirt that I loved, was so unique, and I got so many compliments on it. I felt fabulous in it at home, but once I left, I started feeling very uncomfortable. I wasn't sure why, so I decided to rate everything I wear at the end of the day. If the rating isn't 4.5 or 5 (on a scale of 1 to 5), I go through the whole outfit and each piece to find out why I didn't like it or why didn't I feel comfortable or why I had a lot of anxiety wearing it. It helped me hone in on what I actually like and feel comfortable in. For instance, for the Summer I like midi or maxi skirts or dresses, lightweight with a fitted waist, then drops straight down from the hips. No A-line and no material to get wrapped up in my legs. Turns out the outfit that I didn't feel comfortable in was a tank top and a wrap skirt had an A-line shape. It was a little bit fancier than I like and tended to wind up between my legs (no more polyester!) Loving something on the hanger or when you're at home alone is not necessarily loving it in real life.

@@user-ry1vi1jc7o Thats a great idea. I might try this. The fact that going out in something may not fit the actual surroundings or weather so would be worth noting which occasions it should only be worn for too. Maxi dresses always seem to keep that modesty and work for most occasions.

Thanks for sharing. How do the clothes you're holding onto make you feel now? Are they inspiring you? Or making you feel crummy? Or is your feeling mainly neutral? If neutral, and you have the space... keep the clothes! If the feeling associated with those pieces feels dense and unpleasant... maybe consider letting them go and trust that new items could bring the same joy you once felt in those clothes. 💖

Decades ago I had a book called Color Me Beautiful. It helped me find my color palette and style. It helped me avoid buying things I didn’t wear and my things were interchangeable. Now, retired, I have a new problem. I don’t need clothes for work, I’ve suddenly gained weight and I’m not sure I can lose it, and I don’t go out much. Also, I still love clothes and dressing well. I volunteer just to have a reason to dress. My elderly mother still loved to shop for clothes in her 90s and left behind a huge closet of clothes. I don’t want to do that.

I don't buy clothes often. When I do, I keep them forever because I am very choosy about fabric. I repair them and recycle them when they wear out. I have an everyday denium dress that I bought 25 years ago and still wear. I buy clothing that I can add to or take away from because we have 4 seasons. Most of my "good" clothes were bought 10 or more years ago. Fabrics and construction in recent years are so poor that I try to keep and update what I already have. I wish I had some of the better clothes I gave away before things got to be so cheaply made.

Hi Marilyn- Thanks for your comment. I hear you. I have many clients who experience size fluctuations regularly. I certainly don't suggest getting rid of clothing that's still being worn. If your size fluctuates often, every week or month, I'd offer that you could simply separate your wardrobe into different capsules that work for each size so that it's easy to get dressed when a fluctuation occurs. The main thing to consider is the mental drama involved. The goal is to create a wardrobe that supports you in all areas of your life and for every version of your body. If having all of the various sizes mixed together is creating negative thoughts and emotions when you get dressed, separating them will help. If you don't have any drama about the range of sizes, certainly keep things as is because it's already working! Hope that helps. 💕

Right now i have right under 100 clothing items for four seasons. Everything fits, everything looks nice and none of them are sentimental. I was going into a declutter day today, and after a few weeks watching lots of these kinda videos i ended up only giving up five more items, because i dont like them. The rest i really like and wear around the year. I figured to reach my goal; i will not buy anything new until i have used my clothes until unwearable and only when im down at 60 items i will start switching an item for a new when its time. Naturally i cannot wear all my clothes all the time, but having them visible in my closet its easier to remember for me twitch up my fashion. I did store my winter clothes during the summer and oposite, but now i can fit it all and see it all in my closet, and i really like it! For around 7-8 years ago i probably had 3-400 items of clothing 😂 now its time my journey moves ahead a much much more mindful sense of living as a consumer.

I love this so much! I think there’s another layer to what may be going on as this is what is going on with me. Over the last five years, so many changes have happened in my life that I have transitioned into a position of not even knowing who I am stylistically anymore. I went from being someone that worked out in the community and attended occasional events where I had to dress up and I bought a lot of beautiful things with that in mind. I am now at home taking care of my dad and my disabled daughter and not working out in the community and it has been a very difficult transition to make letting go of an old life that doesn’t really any longer exist and yet going through some grief in that regard. Almost as if I am waiting for the time when the old life comes back around. As I am not yet sure it won’t!

I take photos of clothes I have loved and lost - like old boyfriends - no regrets... just fond memories. I am the sort of person who buys beautiful clothes - gorgeous fabrics and colours (but often secondhand). To me, they are "works of art" that should be hung up to be looked at .... but not really worn (especially now I am fatter). We should just wear comfy clothes that feel good. We all have a distorted view of ourselves ... because we want to look like the model who first inspired us to buy the clothing - and we never will.... If Kristen can feel good in her husband's old cricket jumper - then we can feel good in whatever makes us happy.

One other trick to find that "80%" comes from Gabe Bult to turn all the hangers round with all the clothes items in your wardrobe and then turn them back as you wear each piece. Could you possibly choose (even from your existing wardrobe) a color or fabric you love and wear that for work? Or could you wear a color you love when hiking or working in the garden? KristenCainStyle - one thing I was stuck on, but decided to get past was the I-won't-be-able-to-replace-it-later fear. My minimizing was also done during a move. The problem is, a couple of years later, it turned out to be mostly true. I only buy natural fabrics, and it's really hard to find even 100% cotton T-shirts or 100% wool coats, etc. Most places sell polyester or mixtures of natural fabrics with garbage like acrylic, etc.

Thanks for this info! I retired 6 years ago and just now letting go of work clothes that I'll probably never want or need to wear again. I'll use some of your thought strategies to look at my other wardrobe pieces to pare down even more. These strategies can be applied to other items in my house also and help me do a little clearing out generally. I'm sure I'll feel clearer after eliminating many things in my house that I've been holding onto but no longer want or need.

Summarize: Changing your think and thought first. Be empathetic. 1.What are the % of clothes you wear? Statistically women is only use 20% of their closet , it’s okay to only hold on and only wear the 20% you love and wear comfortable. - Reason why you hold on: 1.Sentimental. 2.Think you will wear in the future (trend repeat)- worn out, not fit, when , why you keeping it? Is it worth the mental and physicals space. 3. Invested in piece expensive 😢. Sunk cost already or time wasting it. 10:32 4.you don’t have time or rent . =>Don’t keep one that is not contribute thing light you up and is wearing.

I struggle to get rid of things that I don't wear they are "almost" right. Last week I donated a good quality barely worn dress because it's just not my colour. I'm still feeling sad even though I hadn't worn in ages (years) 😢 But hoping someone else will get use of it. I've already mentally identified other things in that category

I've been thinking on this subject a while, sorting through mind clutter as to what makes me like a piece of clothing. It will take me several runs through it all and the consistent ideas that make a keeper for me is: quality (how new is still looks and is holding up), style (there are certain styles I know I like in pants and tops), color (does the color help me or wash me out). I feel like I forgot something, but this will require me to skim off some through time as it will prove better to wear and decide in real life.

I donate to Assistance League. It’s a national organization that raises money to buy new clothing for school children. I also shop there sometimes. They make a great effort not to waste used clothing. Even rags get used. When I was young and broke, my friends and I would shop at Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores. It was great fun. So it’s easy for me to donate thinking that someone might discover my donation.

I hear you. I was in the same situation. It wasn't until I went to a minimalist capsule wardrobe that things changed for me. I shot for Project 333 - where you select and wear 33 items only for three months (I wound up with 50 items for Summer). That number includes 27 items of clothes, and the rest is shoes, handbags, and accessories. When you know you have a limited amount of clothes to choose, you choose your favorites. And you arrange your closet so that you can see every single thing including accessories when you open up your closet. What will happen is that you realiz, Oh I feel great in this, or Oh I feel anxious in this one. At the end of the day, analyze why you didn't feel right in the outfit by really looking at the pieces and the outfit overall. By writing these things down, it's really easy to see a pattern of what you feel good and comfortable in.

It makes it more difficult to purge clothing when you live in an environment where the weather goes from sweltering hot, to freezing cold, from arid dry, to wet and rainy, such as the Northeast USA. You need coats, clothing and shoes for all the seasons. What to do? It's hard enough to purge one season, but 4?

Serious question here: is this type of minimalist wardrobe meant to be replaced at the end of the season? Having few pieces means constant wear and washings so they’d wear out at end of season and some might survive a second season of constant wear? Is this a way to always have a new wardrobe each year? We “all” tend to buy some new things each season anyway…
@KristenCainStyle
@KristenCainStyle 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question. No, I definitely don't mean to imply that our wardrobe should need replacing every year. It should not! I believe in a collection of items you love and wear often. With proper care, most nice quality pieces will last for many seasons. The goal is to have enough clothing to rotate through and get dressed with ease. Too few pieces could result in over-wear and a shorter life for those items.

I keep about 3 different sizes of clothing because my weight has fluctuated over the years. I keep them because buying clothes gives me anxiety. I have lipedema in my legs so just finding clothes for a disproportionate body is hard on top of this I’m 5ft tall so very short. Then my feet are extra wide so shoes are so hard to find. I used to go to Payless shoe source because they had wide width but they closed down so I hang on to all the shoes and some don’t fit from weight gain. I feel my anxiety is warranted. I also worry I may not be able to find clothes again. However I hate that my closet and every drawer is packed full of clothes/ shoes. Sometimes I hate to wash clothes because it’s so cramped getting them put away. Lately I’ve been thinking to pull it all out of the closet and make myself put on or try to put on every piece of it and if it doesn’t fit it must go! I haven’t gotten the courage yet to do it. I do agree hanging onto things affects mental health. This is my driving point for change. Thank you for this video it was helpful❤
@KristenCainStyle
@KristenCainStyle 6 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you for your thoughtful comment. Given what you've shared, I can understand why shopping for new clothes creates lots of anxiety. I agree that a good closet clean-out could help with the feelings of frustration when trying to get dressed or put away laundry. Maybe start by removing the clothing that doesn't fit right now. Pack up those pieces for a future time. If your weight fluctuates daily or weekly, you could separate your wardrobe into categories based on fit for changes in your body so that all of the same size clothes are together and easy to find for that 'body'. If you can purge the definite 'no's, it could make the whole process of getting dressed feel better! 💖 And I miss Payless also!! I remember going there often with my kids and always finding something for me as well!!

One reason why most of my wardrobe goes unworn is because of the pandemic. So I turned to leggings and t-shirts. And that's what I typically wear. It's very handy because I do a lot of walking and simply work from home with very little contact from others. So it's very comfortable. I keep all this other stuff in case I start dating again or simply need nicer clothes for going out. But the pandemic has ended, and I still don't wear this stuff for the most part. What can I tell myself to make my wardrobe more compact? The thing is, I have the space for all of this stuff, so I just close the closet door and not think about it... Is this affecting my energy levels?
@KristenCainStyle
