Iguanas are NOT good beginner reptile. They literally should have never been turned into pets, like many other animals. Here's why. I wanted to make this video just to help possible new iguana owners understand just what it takes to care for an iguana. Lots of people purchase iguanas bc they are "inexpensive" at first to purchase and they are small when they're little, but little do they know...all of the work that comes along with keeping them in captivity! Hopefully, you find it useful.

Kristenleannimal. I’ve got my first lizard and it was a iggy ( Iguana) best dissison ever. He’s like a puppy go from his, wip and some bite when I bough him from a spoiled little boy. He is my first lizard. He is so sweet. Whit an iggy you haft to take snail step to transform them to be a gentle giant. No they are not hard to take care of but the patient is a must. My iggy race himself and close his eyes when I bring his food and evertime I come to him.

Only having the iguana for a short while when it's young, you missed out on one of the iguana's most beloved traits - puberty. Their bad temper kicks into overdrive along with the growth increase. Along with increased scratching and thrashing, my iguana, who had previously loved to lay on my arm and snooze, football-style, started to bite and once left a tooth embedded in the toe of my shoe. Definitely a reptile that needs to come with a warning sheet.

That is the discussion I have with parents who want to get their child (ages 8-10 normally) an Iguana as a FIRST pet, not even first reptile, first PET! I tell them that if they're okay with a reptile that grows 6' plus, WILL scratch, tail-whip & possibly bite their child (and their child WILL bleed), then get one. I manage to talk all of them into getting a beardie or leopard gecko lol. Iguanas are my favourite reptiles though - I don't care about the scratching, etc. After they hit 2-3 yrs old (with handling) they chill out.

Yup thts the deal when a male reaches maturity usually around 3 -3.5 years old they will actually go through a mating season even with no female present(one reason id recommend a female for first timers)at these times it would be unwise to try to handle a rutting 6ft male iguana...trick is by tht time you should be able to read that animal like a book and just avoid his aggression.i typically just leave enclosure open so he decides to come out...plus they can be territorial over enclosure once mature.

Old Reptile Keeper chiming in here. I also do not think that Green Iguanas, or Rescue Iguanas are a good Beginner Reptile Pet. There are so many others that are less maintenance, and easier to house properly . That said they are really excellent, responsive pets that are very rewarding when cared for properly from the beginning. Start always with a captive born baby, already used to human contact, and you will have the prehistoric pet of your dreams . Females are always easier than males. Once they reach a pretty good size, you can even have them out in your home as long as their needs are met. I even know a friend who keeps his loose in his fenced back yard in Summer and is always bummed when Cold Weather rolls in. Intelligent and responsive. Now, your Rescues and Rehomed animals can be set up as display animals, not to be held or interacted with other than care and feeding . I am 65 years young and currently have a nice 3 foot long male who loves to try and whack me with his tail, and when he does , I know that he is healthier than when I got him . I have kept Green Iguanas for 55 of my 65 years and plan to continue . You are doing an awesome job rescuing many animals that would be dead without you. Glad you are encouraging folks to consider other pets than the standard cat or dog. Thanks for all that you do !

He'd look at me EVERY TIME.. Almost like... 'MOM.. She likes me see!!' AFTER she was born.. He watched her from a distance... BUt was ALWAYS curious! Once she was a few months old and rolling around... He would walk up along side her where she could grab his tail at the end.. (Where it wasnt sharp OR harmful in any way...) And drag her around... He did it ALOT.. The first few times i seen it.. I didn't know that that's what he was doing and I took her hand off INSTANTLY... Then he kept doing it! Once she was walking... He would again walk up to her.. Cock his head.. Look at her (it's like thats how they communicated.. They understood each other!) And she would pick up his tale very lightly and carefully and walk around the apartment! They were best friends!! I miss him sooo much! He enjoyed going for walks with us! I also had a lil stereo boom box thingy in the. Bathroom on The sink counter... He would climb up onto the toilet (thats also how he got into the tub to poop and pee!) Then use the toilet paper thingy as a step.. Get UP ONTO the sink counter and climb onto the stereo! The mirror was there... Watching him check himsef out was a hoot and flaring up his dolap was sooo funny! Ugh sooo many stories! I rescued him for a drug addict... I DIDN'T KNOW a damn thing about reptiles! BUT I sure as well WASN'T letting him stay there a moment longer!! Took him a lil bit to trust me... And me for him for that matter! Once we did tho... We grew leaps and bounds!! My cat also loved to cutl up with him under his heat lamp...( Oh and should mention I NEVER caged him! Like ever!) And they would sleep like that... I DON'T KNOW if i would ever get another one.. From whats being said he was very RARE! I was only ever whipped twice... Both times was in his defence of a dog... But he was up in me... While i was pregnant we had hurricane Juan (I'm in Halifax Nova Scotia) and it devistated the city... So i had to go to my now ex father inlaws cause they had water and bubba needed water!!! Reptiles are some of my favorite animals to work with. I've worked with a lot of rescued wild reptiles who had to be kept at the wildlife center I worked at due to disabilities and I've been around them in general my whole life. It really depends on the lizard, but I've always had great experiences, and lucky for me I live in florida, and these guys can live in the enviroment here naturally, so it's super easy to get a good enviroment for them. I took care of a iguana in the little rescue for exotic animals I worked at and he was stunted in his growth and very used to being handled because his former owners basically treated him like a dog. Elias was calm enough to take out of his huge enclosure and show to the school classes that visited each day and he was fine with being touched by a few of them. He also liked walking around one of our rooms every now and then but they are certainly not a pet for someone who doesn't know what they are doing. They have a very specific diet(some of which will grow in your garden) you have to look up and their heating and stuff can be very expensive over time. Elias was born in captivity and truly one very special iguana due to how he grew up but most of them just aren't like him and certainly not cuddly pets at all. Also yes an iguana can rip you a new one without even trying. We had a new guy who wouldn't take him out of his enclosure like we showed him and we had to call him an ambulance because Elias claws cut open his whole arm from wrist to almost the elbow while trying to get away from being held like that

hahah this is bringing back so many memories! One of my best friends had an Iguana. He had a one bedroom house and the Iguana got the bedroom and my friend slept on a futon in the living room. I can remember one time when the Iguana was downstairs with us and I was laying on my stomach watching a movie. The Iguana started climbing up my legs and back and stepped on my head and climbed over and he took his good ole time doing it too. Oh those claws feel good. (yeah not so much!) I remember having to go to the grocery store with my friend for greens, veg and figs often. figs were the fave. & I remember him bathing the Iguana so he would poop and always having to be a little leary entering the bedroom since they are territorial. You never know where in the room the Iguana will be or if he'll be happy to see you at the time. Anyway.. I haven't really thought about all this in awhile and just thought I'd share. ;)

He would try to whip us with his tail but literally after 3 days of us feeding him properly, a huge amazing enclosure and proper lighting he let us pet him, hold him and hand feed him. We never had a problem with him and he was 3.5 feet when we got him and 5.5 when we gave him to my uncle who gave him a whole room. We let him roam my parents bedroom for a few hours every day. I don’t understand why people think they’re such hard animals to take care of or have around. They can be amazing pets for the RIGHT people.

That's a lot of work to some people... if you compare it to something like a Ball Python who feeds maybe once a week, poops about that often, and has no UV requirements (only heat), it's a pretty different level of "easy" lol. Iguanas are normally VERY tough to care for. By the time you got yours, it was already past its "puberty" stage which is when 90% of all the biting, tail-whipping, etc takes place. If they're tamed out before that, then they're AMAZING as they get older/bigger. You got lucky. Raising one from a baby is harder than caring for 20 beardies. They are VERY difficult to care for earlier on (I have 3 regular Iguanas, and 4 other ones in 4 different species). Been working with them since the 90s.

Heather Hale he was pretty young still, we took him to our local reptile/exotic vet and he was NOT nice when we got him as I said. Tried to bite, scratch and tail whip if we even opened the crate we got him in. After realizing we weren’t his old owner and were actually going to care for him properly he changed completely. My boyfriends parents had 3 from babies over their lifetime and all of them were great growing up and when taken out of their room weren’t mean or territorial. Maybe we just got lucky with the 4 iguanas we owned, but they were amazing and are easy for people who have already owned some reptiles. I never said they would make for a good starter pet like a beardie or ball python (yes I’ve also had both) which can also be quite a bit of work for someone who’s unknowledgeable. No matter what all reptiles are hard to care for, yes an iguana is more for someone whose already had some experience, but that comes along with certain snakes and geckos and every other reptile. Not looking for someone to sit here and tell me I don’t know things that I do. It comes down to people need to pull their heads out of their asses and research animals before they buy them 🤷🏻‍♀️

I rescued a baby iguana about 3 years ago. We were moving a family friends of ours and he had this little iguana. In a small 30 gallon tank. No lights and in his attic. He was so skinny. I could see his ribs. He had so much stuck shed. I did so much research and eventually rescued him. In a couple months he was finally a bright green, he had weight on him and his stuck shed was gone after a lot of coconut oil rubbing and love. He was my first and he’s still thriving. He’s a big boy now. At first he used to hide and whip his tail a lot and now he will just sit on your lap. It was definitely a struggle but I’m very happy I saved him

My grandparents had one for us when we were kids. They had a hillside just out back of their home that they fenced in and let Reptar (we were big Rugrats fans) roam every day it was warm. When it was cold, they had converted a small bedroom into his room. He was the sweetest and would freak people out when they first met him. He died at 16.

I had my beardie boy for nine years. Very easy. Let anyone and everyone hold him. Never had to hand train him he just loved being held and was not a jumper. Could take him everywhere. Got a Leo about a month ago now and he’s nuts. Won’t let other people touch him only me. Takes leaps of faith off my shoulder or body when I’m trying to clean his poop or mist his dirt. Beardies eat way more but so so much better for a starter or kids.

I rescued a blue iguana from a pet store that was injured and stuffed into a very small tank with 7 others... he was suffering from a burn that ended up growing a bacterial infection that caused his tail to start rotting... I now have him under treatments and gets daily injections which are not cheap. My iguana is barely over a foot long and I had to go spend hundreds on just a gigantic fish aquarium which is literally the size of my wall. Not to mention the lights and heaters my electricity went up to over 300 per month .... if people arent ready for too be giving injections and ointments everyday or cant afford the expenses it's definitely not the pet for them. This is my gorgeous scale baby and I make sure I have everything no matter what I have to go without but most people dont make that sacrifice or even bond with them :( thank you for educating people about reptiles or beaks my heart to see so many end up for sale to people who don't know what they're doing :(

Thank you so much for this. I used to work at a pet store, which I now abhor, and frequently discouraged beginners/impulse buyers from picking out iguanas and chameleons, especially female chameleons. Trying to explain the amount of work, the amount of money, the time span, the delicate nature of some of them, special needs for females, utility bills associated with them, etc... It was exhausting. The mentality of, "well they're tiny and cute now, I'll worry about that later..." Is so dangerous. Iguanas are like having children in a way. It's insane. And a lot of people just don't generally have the forethought and planning to really care for these needy animals. Much love to those who are dedicated to rescuing such care intensive critters.

Of course iguanas can attack or be defensive, for male in the mating season they became more aggresive, but for some reason they are so exotic, beautiful and challenging. That's why we as a keeper love Iguanas. Just like some animal, even dogs can bite, it's just the way to respect them.

We used to have an iguanas at college, the male one for some strange reason fell in love with me, he didnt like anyone, ever, like tail whipping, biting, he would literally lunge at the tank glass. But I could walk in, spray him with his mister and he would sit and chill with me. The college ended up sending him home with me, he had an entire room that used to be a wet room, so was easy to keep the humidity up. He lived for around 9 yrs after being with me but was almost 10 when he was given to me and previously abused :( Really great to see such an unsightly video!! I would never get another iguana unless they were to bond with me like he did

I'll never forget this girl on my tennis team in HS because she had an iguana that was at least 3 feet long and it was in shed when I first saw it. They were keeping it in about a medium sized dog crate, its tail was sticking out of the cage I remember that. It also had one of the worst smells to it that I've ever smelled. Idk if that was it's all the time cage but I remember while also being terrified of it, also feeling super bad for it. Oh yeah and I live in Colorado so there's no chance that iguana was getting the correct humidity let alone the slightest bit of proper care if that was the cage they kept it in.

I’ve had a bright blue iguana for a little over a year( a very rare morph of green iguanas) and my best advice is you have to be okay w/ a look dotn touch animal. And when you feed them they will come for you, and stupid as it sounds stand your ground if u flick at then they’ll atack and if u run ur hand away, they’ll chase it off and be too aggressive.

I've worked with Iggies since the 90s. I force-handle all of them (and I don't wear bitch mittens (gloves lol)). The scratches are part of owning an Iggy, so is the tail-whipping. Anyone who isn't okay with that really shouldn't have one. At some point, you'll probably get bit - and you'll bleed. Once they hit about 2-3 years old, they normally chill out as long as handling is 1-3 hours/day. Blues are super common now - it's all about the cool axanthic & albino morphs now. =) I have one red, one blue rescue & one albino (and 4 other Iggies in 4 other genus/species). Mine don't come for me when I feed them at all. They should definitely be touched - not touching them or being afraid of them is the WORST advice...

When I was in 5th grade, we had a green iguana. He was honestly really sweet, unless he was stuck or it was mating season. During mating season he absolutely hated my dad, and would chase my mother around a lot if we took him out of his cage (or if he got out, his cage was homemade and if we didn’t remember to put the bottom bar on the doors). He bit my mother a couple times, but it was always because he got his foot stuck in something and she had to get him out. The only time he ever hurt me though, was when (because I could let him crawl on my head; id put my hood up and he would climb up because dad wasn’t usually home so I was the tallest person in the house) well one day, he wanted on my head. He wasn’t willing to wait for the hood to go up this day, and knew his hands would get stuck in my hair if he climbed up the back of my head with no hood. So, he decided to climb up my face and those ten minutes ended with us all thinking I was going to lose my eye. It’s an absolute miracle he didn’t break much skin. As much as I absolutely adored him, and as much as he was a very tamed sweet boy compared to most, DO NOT ffs DO NOT GET A FUCKING IGUANA. Even if he’s very very tame, there will still be times they act up; even if they mean no real damage by it they CAN AND WILL mess you up. Whether they got aggressive over something, or they simply want to climb on your head and misjudge where they can put their feet, they will hurt you and most people can’t handle that and the animal should not ever be punished because you wanted something fancy but couldn’t handle the struggle of taking care of one.

I can leave the cage door open and she just pokes her head out and falls asleep there, shes not too big into adventuring. She does seem to sense fear though, in new people who know iguanas can be mean she will puff up at them to kinda show them shes boss but she has never bitten or gone after anyone.

The one we had when I was older was a little sass master. I've had an iguana for about a year now, and honestly I can't say they're difficult to keep at all. Then again, I have a large house and plenty of room to offer a good sized cage for him. He's also my first reptile that I've kept personally, although I have cared for other reptiles in the past. He's super super friendly, and whenever he sees me he'll come to the glass doors and ask to be let out. His favourite place to hang out is at closed windows, where he'll climb the blinds and look out. I'm rambling now but.. Iguanas aren't as bad as people rumour them to be. They have a stigma behind them when really they're just little babies. When cared for properly, they have the potential to be very tame and sweet, loving animals. I know this is not the case for everyone, and I'm not denying anything said in this video, but they're not psychotic little devils who will whip and bite you just for the sake of it. Unless provoked, teased, or traumatised from past experiences, their temperament is fine. Their claws do cut, but they don't hurt too bad, and clipping their claws is super easy and fast, since you just need the very tips gone. So, if you feel you've wanted an iguana, and can provide proper care for one, but this video has you a bit disheartened, I believe that if you're sure you've got the skills to deal with a pet that needs a lot of space, socialisation and heating, then why not give it a shot.

Every thing you said is spot on, also because Iguanas like to climb they try to climb up a person as high as possible which means tearing skin to bits and the scratches itch like hell. They are very strong and you won't get a full grown one off you once he clings on. Also Iguanas react to the hormones that human females give off around the time of the month, it makes the animal aggresive and it may try to bite or attack.

I have a sad story, my moms first reptile was an iguana, ( this was before I was born) she took care of it so Incredibly well, she had him for 8 years but one day a blizzard knocked the power out for a few days and unfortunately the iguana froze to death, my mom beats her self up about it but there was nothing she could do :( sorry to be so sad but I just wanted to share this story

So happy you started off by how big the enclosure needs to be or designated area and it’s large! Not to mention the diet! Huge variety of veggies they need!

I really cant say much about this i have an iguana she was rescued at the age of 3yrs. You never know what you're going to get with ANY reptile. But she is the sweetest most loveable reptile out of the very many that i have

Not many people can talk me out of things. An Iguana is an animal I've always wanted. Now I don't. Thank you, really, THANK YOU!

I currently have a red, and have had various greens, and always found them to be pretty easy maintenance. They require a lot of handling, and love baths, but it's all easy to me at least.

I bought an iguana from Petco when I was like 8-9 years old and had him for maybe 6 months to a year (can't remember). I was a super nerdy kit and did TONS (I mean TONS; 3 to 4 months worth of nonstop reading) of research, but still, I can't believe I actually got one and I also can't believe Petco sold iguanas back then. I'm not sure if they do still (highly doubt it).

It’s nice when someone is completely honest about what caring for a specific pet entails; without sugar coating and making the downfalls seem like nothing compared to the benefits... I understand wanting to give reptiles a good name and not dissuading people from giving them homes, but when there is misinformation you get beginners buying animals they end up not wanting anymore; and boom ya got released iguanas running around backyards like evil squirrels in florida. Bearded dragons and leopard geckos are good beginner lizards; personally I would say bearded dragons are the number one choice; they are easy to care for and easy to tame - and if they are in a bad mood they let you know well before they bite.

Another thing to mention is that the uvb needs to be on a tropical spectrum (5.0 for tropical, and 10.0 for desert animals). It also needs to cover a majority of the length of the cage because unless the animal is directly underneath that one bulb, it’s not getting enough of it (and don’t forget to change the uvb bulbs out every 9-12 months varying the species) Iguanas are great..... for the right person. You nailed it 💚

I have two iguanas now. A green iguana and black spiny tail iguana. And they are both so rude. I hope they both calm down but if they don’t I will love them regardless. They are so beautiful.

I have an iguana and he’s getting really aggressive. We did our research and did everything we could, he has a giant cage and we’re even building him an even bigger one out of a bunk bed. I don’t know what else to do.

For chameleons do you have to have the ENTIRE room the temperature they need or can you just keep their cage the temperature they need

I had an iguana growing up. He was super smart. He used to always break out of his cage so he became a house pet, no cage. He was litter box trained with that cats and never pooped in the house. He was smaller than my hand as a baby and grew to about 5 feet long. And yes he loved to sit in the bathtub and soak! He would typically sit at the windows for sun too, but I lived in Miami. All of his meals were fresh salads topped with lots of vitamins/supplements and his favorite treats were grapes and hibiscus flowers we would pick from outside the house. What's funny is he preferred certain colors over others.

My first iguana lived for 15 years. People don't realize that it is a long term commitment. Basically mine had his own bedroom, and never paid rent once.
