This was an interesting watch. It really shows how Kristoph went from a calm and cool headed defense attorney to a man whose jealousy and pride led him to forging evidence, manipulating multiple people, including his own brother, murdering Drew and Zak, and getting Phoenix disbarred. And it ended up being for nothing due to his own former employee and the man he hates never giving up in pursuing the truth.
@debastiansebeste Жыл бұрын
Indeed. All of this happened because he lied to himself that Phoenix was unworthy and that he didn't deserve his reputation. But it backfired as the man he underestimated proved that he was more than enough to take him down in the end
@themastermindvigilante4029 Жыл бұрын
You also forgot he wanted to murder a 12years old girl at the time he made the forgery. He goes that low just for his own pride. Even Manfred, with how horrible of a monster he is, didn’t tried to frame nor killed Miles when he had the opoortunity to completely ruin Gregory after murdering him. Ace Attorney, where it’s a good game is about how the culprits are represented about their motive for murder. Manfred: A man who fear to lose, ready to break the law just to continue to win, by twisting the truth and conducting illegal and wrong verdicts just to win. And when he lost, he simply goes to murder while he gain the occasion. He even goes that far than instigating the same bailif he framed to murder, using the fact he had nothing to lose, to lead him to kill someone (who rest morally wrong, Durand was still a piece of shit with Yogi, he still ruined his life too) and framed Miles for it (it’s also why, even if Yogi is a killer, i still have pity for this man, he didn’t deserve what happen to him before his crime). Kristoph: A man who litterally lost himself, at some point during his carreer, in his will to conduct a perfect defense with fact but no beliefs. He never believed his clients innocence, he just wanted them innocent...for him, not for the others. He clearly never cared about them, they could have been guilty or not, he simply wanted to satisfy his will of "perfect" defense. But when Zachary revealed his lack of humanity during the game, he completely lose it and planned both him and Pheonix deceit (and god he was patient for it, like really...he was really determined to kill them...wow)

Few really understand that Phoenix is a genius, even in the newer games. His style was never meant to reflect a detective. He ALWAYS has and has been a DEFENSE ATTORNEY through and through. He is meant to question everything the prosecution throws at him. The fact Wright canonically never suffered a penalty from a series famous for save scumming is a testament how quick he is on his feet despite always saying that he is currently bluffing. I never saw it that way, that he Deus ex Machina's his way to victory. Because if that was the case, then the game would NEVER be satisfying or fun in the slightest. The devs really ought to tone down his inner dialogue of bluffing and boost his confidence a little. Wright really is an awesome protagonist, and a very original rendition of a genius. It makes him relatable, without having to sacrifice the fact that he is also special as well.
@Anomaly1886 күн бұрын
To be fair, in the original trilogy Phoenix is completely green and has very tough cases thrown his way despite his lack of experience. So in his mind he is bluffing while scrambling to fit the pieces together as he bumblefucks his way through the court proceedings. And even then he doesn't accomplish everything all on his own. Mia had to step in from beyond the grave several times to save his ass.
@joshuawillis602 Жыл бұрын
Simple fact that Kristoph will never understand. Phoenix doesn’t practice law for fame. He does it to find the truth. He doesn’t care if some of his actions or mistakes causes him embarrassment. If it’ll help him find the truth it’s more than worth it. All that “professionalism” that Kristoph values so much doesn’t mean anything if you’re corrupt and only care about appearance.

By the way, there is one headcanon thing that is mentioned by some fiction writers (and probably not only them, IDK) and as I think it is logical enough to fit in AA plot Firstly some facts. 1. Klavier was interested in music much more than in law that is seen by his appearance, and it was said several times that Klavier started learning law because of his brother, who guided him to the "justice" 2. As we can see in AA4, Kristoph's hand was wounded so much that it had to be stitched. So the version says that Kristoph initially was also more interested in music (specifically, in violin playing) but then he damaged his arm so much he could not carry on his passion. As a result, he became much more focused on studying law, thus becoming a defence attorney. So his grudges and actions could be also a result of his shattered love to music; Zak's rejection has proven him he's not good even at law he also liked; so he did gamer things in order to prove himself that Zak was wrong. But in the end it was Phoenix whose game it was all along.

For Kristoph, it’s clearly his lack of humanity, turning his will to be the perfect lawyer that made him forbid his human quality and praising his pride. About the psyche locks, yeah. Kristoph was more complex of a villain than I expected, and I was wondering at first what his psyche locks were about. What's interesting about Kristoph, is that he never confessed anything. Thus his actions are left to be interpreted in any way. But what doesn't sit well with this interpretation is the fact of Black Psyche-Locks that Wright saw in the end of Apollo Justice. Dual Destinies later revealed that these signify memory that is buried away even for the person itself. Something that Kristoph himself has no evident memory of. And I don't think that it's due of the fact that Zak fired him. It doesn't seem that it's correct, especially since that was public opinion. There is an interesting custom case at aaonilne, called Turnabout Trickery. Tldr of it: What if Kristoph never intended any of this? But the fact that Zak escaped ruined his plans? Kristoph could've intended to cause a turnabout of his own by saving Wright at the last moment, saying that page is not evidence, but a representation of that there could be page of diary that was ripped out. Aka, nothing was forged, and this page simply shows possibility, just like Phoenix did to Apollo in first case with bloody ace. Idk, but i got that as headcanon for me. Still good video tho, can't deny that this could also be the case.
@debastiansebeste9 ай бұрын
Kristoph doing everything he did so that he'd save Wright in the last moment sounds like way more of a stretch to me than my own version xD In his last trial Kristoph still admitted that Zak Gramarye deserved to die for firing him over a game of poker. The fact that he always went "oh, but I confess nothing, I just say that he deserved it", plus his reaction during his breakdown which could easily emulate someone becoming broken due to their black locks breaking, are sufficient enough evidence about what the case was with him imho
@МихаилБганко9 ай бұрын
Reason why he would save Wright in trial wasn't to save, but to humiliate Phoenix, Klavier and Zak too. Phoenix is too much of a second-rate, thus he misused the page Klavier blindly believed Kristoph, his to-be-enemy Zak was a fool to fire Kristoph, which almost costed him a life. In that way, Kristoph would satisfy his prideful ego, and boost his reputation.
@debastiansebeste9 ай бұрын
@@МихаилБганко while it sounds interesting, I feel we have almost zero hints from the canon Kristoph for anything like this actually being the case
@marvelous_68019 күн бұрын
Very late to this one, but this is really amazing! It’s just very tragic to know that Kristoph is willingly to do anything to satisfy his ego to the point that he used his brother and probably is gonna throw him under the bus if he got caught early on. To think that he used to be somewhat of a moral man before the start of the game (Headcanon or even canon) is just a pity..
@SorenDaein Жыл бұрын
"Descent to Insanity" is accurate. Kristoph Gavin went off the deep end from Phoenix Wright's unconventional tactics in the courtroom. Besides, no other defense attorney could pull off a win against Manfred Von Karma the way Phoenix Wright did. Especially considering Wright was talking off the top of his head when he suggested the missing bullet from Yanni Yogi's service weapon wasn't found because it hit the true culprit of the DL-6 incident. There's also the matter of using Spirit Channeling in the courtroom for results that are bonkers. To top it all off, Wright performed an exorcism right in the courtroom, proving in the Ace Attorney universe that the concept of ghosts is not just fairy tales and hokum.

Its a video like this that really makes me wish Kristoph appeared in another game outside of Apollo justice he is way to interesting of a character to relegate to a single game heck I even have idea for if he were to theoretically return.
@thedebatemaster11 ай бұрын
i like this, it shows how kristoph could've been a great and likeable defense attorney but his jealousy and pride threw him down the drain of commiting murder, forging, and even disbarring phoenix. my only complaint is in the start of the videos, there are some parts where kristoph has a one-on-one negotiation with characters like zak gramarye and vera misham, you could've made it slightly better by having kristoph narrate as if you were playing phoenix in that situation, what i mean is during the investigation parts of AA you can see phoenix talking but his sprite never appears
@debastiansebeste11 ай бұрын
Nope. Never. Not better, doing so would have made it far worse for my tastes. That's one of my weak spots. I *hate* the 1st-person scenes, so even in scenes that were 1st person for Phoenix Wright you'll see in my videos that I always show even Phoenix (in his 3d sprites instead). I never liked the choice of the main character not appearing during conversations because of it being 1st person. I always need to see the character's face and expressions, especially during inner monologues xD (much better for me was in the Edgeworth games where we always see Edgeworth during conversations and inner dialogue scenes) Other than that, glad you liked the vid :D

Okay I'm leaving this comment before I even watch the full video but: I just wanted to say about the black psyche locks. After going about 6 years of real world time before we get an explanation and how they work in Dual Destinies, going back to Kristoph's subconscious desire to keep secret his motive for killing Zak Gramarye trigging the locks made me realize something. We saw the black locks come off of Athena, but we never saw them actually come off on screen on kristoff that I realized the explanation in DD said that if you're not careful at removing those locks, you could permanently damage a person's soul. In other words, I believe that is why Kristoph Gavin looked like that at the end of the game. He got completely insane from the black locks crushing his very soul, leaving an insane shell of his former "coolest defense in the west" self. I'm willing to bet this will be covered in this video, so here I go Athena was lucky to actually be free of her locks
@odwrksboxedtrash3730 Жыл бұрын
To be fair to Kristoph, going through all of this internal rage, doing your "best" to get your client an acquittal... then finally losing your client because you lost a game of poker. I would understand why he would go insane. Not that this justifies his actions. I'm just saying I understand.

Idea for a new video maybe, also spoilers for apollo justice idk what the fan theories say about this but they never tell you explicitly who shot Thalassa during the rehearsal incident, I think one of these videos addressing the topic could prove very interesting, and I'd like to hear your theory even though I have one of my own
@debastiansebeste Жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that as well tbh. It would be even better imho if it was neither Valant nor Zak, but actually a third one? Like [SoJ spoilers] . . . . . . Roger Retinz? Sounds like a good idea, and I might explore it after I've played Spirit of Justice
@santiagorodriguez2940 Жыл бұрын
I also believe it was a third person (although I had not considered that person. It's an interesting possibility) in fact I think the game heavily implies it could not have been Zak for a few reasons
@debastiansebeste Жыл бұрын
@@santiagorodriguez2940 You think it could have been Valant? I've also heard the theory of Magnifi himself being the shooter, to ensnare his students. But I'd rather not believe the man would go as far as to shoot his own daughter to turn his pupils into his slaves xD
@santiagorodriguez2940 Жыл бұрын
@@debastiansebeste I think it's Magnifi, yes. Here it goes: Considering how Thalassa was so randomly reborn as Lamiroir in a completely different country and had no memory of her past it's clear someone must've known something about her, and who would know if not magnifi? I mean, not even Zak knew. And if either Zak or Valant were the ones who shot her there'd be no reason for her to manipulate BOTH into doing his bidding. Especially since, as I said before, it couldn't possibly be Zak, and magnifi was giving Zak the rights to his magic, so why would he coerce Zak? And magnifi could know which gun did it with ballistic marks analysis. In 4-4 Klavier says that they would've been able to find out which gun shot magnifi had they had more time And since Magnifi was the superior magician he could've easily engineered some sort of trick to get the job done without zak and valant noticing As for motive considering how wicked magnifi was, I wouldn't put it past him to "sacrifice" his daughter to have his 2 mentors doing his bidding for the rest of his life
@debastiansebeste Жыл бұрын
@@santiagorodriguez2940 damn that's sick ngl. But to be fair, Magnifi certainly was the one who sent Thalassa to Borginia to make his pupils think they killed her, so on second thought I wouldn't have him be above such an act. But I still thought it was an accident. I mean, both Valant and Zak knew they were using real bullets at the time and thought they just missed. Maybe that could be Magnifi's plan all along, introducing this specific trick so that Thalassa would get shot and he would exploit her? But I still don't see how much of a profit Magnifi would have to set up Zak and Valant like that. Because of fthat they'd leave the Troupe and make their own successful show, stealing away from his own fame?

Part of me finds it kinda funny that Kristoph, in his immense lake of salt, points out Phoenix is the protégé of Mia, calling her a legendary attorney and Phoenix not worth that title because of his ton of bluffing, when, in her first two cases (the only two we know she took the lead in), Mia likely had to resort to bluffs about as much as Phoenix. It's practically par for the course if you're an Ace Attorney protag (not named Edgeworth). '^^
@debastiansebeste11 ай бұрын
Funny thing is, Mia bluffed less than Phoenix by a ton in both her trials, and she always had a snarkiness, swagger and confidence that she was on the right direction. She didn't really do what Phoenix constantly did in the trilogy. Which is him in repeat: "Uh oh, we've lost big time. I must think up of an unbelievable statement that can keep the trial going. *statement miraculously happens to be true* Whaaaat!? I was actually right!? I mean, of course I was! >:)"

The one thing I don't get are the Black Psyche locks forming. It makes zero sense when you consider what they are, as told in Dual Destinies.
@debastiansebeste Жыл бұрын
The way I wrote it, I imagined Kristoph's black locks are because he decided to deny even to himself that Wright could be a better attorney than him. So he hid the truth in his subconscious
@lucinavonnolaran8728 Жыл бұрын
There's a blatant contradiction in that, though. As we see with Athena when her Psyche locks, she appears to be on the verge of a complete mental breakdown as she realizes everything and talks about it in court. The locks breaking manifested physically like a massive headache painful enough to at least start yelling and screaming. However, in game with Kristoph, such an occurrence doesn't even happen until well after he has talked about what happened at length.
@lucinavonnolaran8728 Жыл бұрын
In fact, I would go as far as to venture that his locks have more to do with his ideals getting tangled up into so many knots, rather than the Zak and Phoenix fiasco. Kristoph, according to Klavier, actually focused on pointing out contradictions in the law at one point, with Klavier lamenting that Kristoph seemed to stop that for some reason. Perhaps Kristoph ran into so many contradictions that subconsciously, he gave up and locked it away, believing the law to be absolute from that point onward. It was everything. Phoenix introducing the Jurist system, however, started to reawaken that side that wanted to find the contradictions. However, because Klavier had conformed too much, I imagine that the locks broke and drove him even further into madness, which is something Pearl states is a possibility in Dual Destinies, when the Black Locks are removed by force.
