Quick fact Dude .. the guy playing the keyboards is named Greg Rollie he would eventually leave Santana to form a band called Journey
@AVGuyhall2 сағат бұрын
And Neal Schon quit high school to go play with Santana when he was 17. He of course joined with Greg to form Golden Gate Rhythm Section, which they later renamed Journey. Funny how so many paths cross.

Michael Shrieve, the drummer, was 20 years old in 1969 at Woodstock.
@ericsmith1233 сағат бұрын
You are correct about them being high at Woodstock. Santana didn't expect to go on for many hours, so Carlos accepted lsd from Jerry Garcia, dropped it, and was promptly told that they'd be going on right away. Carlos later said he thought his guitar was a giant snake during this set. The band was unknown on the East coast when they played Woodstock, and their performance is often considered the highlight of the festival. Drummer Michael Shrieve was 20 when they played Woodstock, and his performance is insane. There's a longer version of this song with a drum solo.

I've found your channel from watching Black Pagasus, you're great dude! I'm 78 and been a B3 player since 1970. I toured all over North America schlepping that beast around for almost 15 years. The full console weighs about 300 pounds without the bench and pedals. After a few years of that I had it chopped when I was in Chicago for 2 weeks which dropped it to "only" about 225 pounds. That's not counting the Leslie speaker which is the 4 foot tall wooden box thing you see on the stage. Greg Rollie is one of my hero's I copied every lick he ever did with Santana. I'm in a band now that does a lot of Santana including Soul Sacrifice and the audience still loves it. Most of the B3 greats came out of the church. Number One is Jimmy Smith, the godfather of the B3. He came out around 1959 and Every. Single. Famous B3 player including Greg Rollie learned everything from Jimmy Smith including me. You HAVE to check him out, tons of videos of albums and live shows. The dude just cooks. The B3 It's still a major voice in current music. Now most of us play a digital "clone" and mine weighs 26 pounds and sounds very authentic. If only that was available then...

Fortunate to be right in front of the stage at Woodstock day 1. Got there early and claimed my spot in the mud. So damn exhilarating, couldn’t stop dancing. First time hearing/ experiencing Santana loved them ever since. We were all a lot younger back then… Peace and Love

I had read and listened to an interview from Carlos years back. During Soul Sacrifice, Carlos and the band were tripping as he and the band dropped acid. They were told earlier in the day that they were not going on stage until many hours later. As their time was pushed forward, they were all still heavily tripping when they got on stage. Carlos has said many times that it felt like the neck of his guitar was slithering around like snakes. He would close his eyes as he didn't want to stare at his guitar neck, because it would freak him out.

They hadn't even released a record yet! Amazingly tight band for just starting out, and playing to that huge audience while tripping balls. Keyboard player is Greg Rollie, who later was a founding member of Journey.

Here for your classics journey. This is a great one. I saw an interview with Carlos once where he said he had taken some acid before this performance and that the neck of the guitar was turning into a snake while he was trying to play. 🤭.. I think there is a longer version of this performance with a much longer drum solo. ✌️🌻💃

My 5 guitar gods, in no particular order are Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton Emppu Vuorinen, Jimmy Page and Andreas Segovia. Two of which most don't know. There are so many amazing guitarist, last and present that can be called GOAT's but these are my personal top 5.

Not only was everyone on something but these guys had all just done a little some-some because they thought it would be a while before they played but then the dude came in and said, “you’re up”, so they had to go on right after they’d “done something”. Santana said every time he looked down at his guitar it turned into a snake.

Recommendation for a classic song with killer instrumentals Traffic - The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys from 1971. Wunderkind Steve Winwood on vocals - multi-instrumentalist has been in bands with Eric Clapton and other greats of that era. Great R&B vocalist later in his career. Pure talent. Still alive and sounding good. Check it out.

Carlos was a great player, but even he with almost all of his peers, have said Jimi Hendrix is the best ever. He changed Rock music overnight in a small London pub. Only one like him in a generation, and it's Jimi Hendrix.

This is why GOAT is meaningless when it comes to Rock guitar players; there are just too many and each has there own style. Even coming up with a top 10 would leave out some masters. An example is Alvin Lee, who also stole the show at Woodstock.

I saw Stevie open for Robert Plant. Epic. Jimmy Page and Stevie are my top 2 but I only say Jimmy cause he's 80 and has been playing since he was 10 and is now 80 and just recently played on someone's Lp. IMO it makes him the greatest. If Stevie had lived a long life to me there wouldn't be a comparison
