Great Video. Regarding the MIDI Clip feature in Ableton Live 12, does anyone know if it's possible to map the transformation tools, such as the rate or the gate of the arpeggiator, for more dynamic control within a project? Looking forward to any insights or tips on this!

Cool video! So I think the element you may have glossed over thats great about quantize is the amount! This is huge. Before, you had to sort of guess how much you wanted to quantize -- apply it -- then undo if you overdid it. It was kind of a guessing game. Now, like Logic, you can dial it in more precisely.
@LillianFrances
@LillianFrances 11 ай бұрын
Hey Evan! Glad you liked it. So if you'd like to set the quantization amount you have hit shift + cmd + u, and the quantize dialog box will appear where you can set quantize to (length), adjust note, and amount. You may have just been hitting cmd + u, which will quantize based on the last used quantize settings :] happy producing!

I was just pointing out that the Amount knob here is quite a bit cooler than I think you may have acknowledged in the video. Again, before you could not visually audition in real time the amount of quantization you were applying. You had to apply it, listen, undo, repeat. NOW you can really dial it in with the Amount knob 😊 It’s quite a cool new feature!

Good walkthrough, but I think you were a bit harsh on Connect, only listening to it at 100% density with 32'nd notes, did you really expect that to sound good? Do you usually do your chord progressions in 32'nd notes? Used right it's a great feature.

From what I gather, Tenuto is allowing for random overlaps in the chord endings, whereas legato makes all the chords cut off at the start of the next note. This is based on Google's description of the meaning of the word Tenuto - "a note or chord held for its full time value or slightly more."

I know its nice to have in the main program, but there isnt anything in the update thst you cant do with the Ableton Enhancement Suite, as far as the piano roll goes. Im certainly not in a hurry to buy ANOTHER Ableton license for basically nothing. I just paid a heap for the last one!

Did they add the ability to do alt+space to play from piano roll playhead when multi-clip editing?

hm - I can play from the playhead in the piano roll when holding down shift not alt... it does work in 12 for multi-clip editing. cheers!

this is so exciting, i can't wait to make the most ridiculous music ever. How did you get the beta so early? I've only seen youtubers with it, none of the people i actually discuss music with online. is ableton 12 a grand conspiracy? i signed up for the beta maybe 8 hours after it was announced, and i have friends who signed up basically immediately, and we're all waiting. i know i'm super impatient but god DAMN i am excited. i've been checking my inbox for the live 12 email ever like 20 minutes haha

hey I hope you get it soon! it's been so fun to play around in. I've been one of the beta testers for Ableton for a few years now so luckily got on it some time ago :] but yes, more ridiculous music let's go!

i think the point of tanuto might be to just keep things the same and let you adjust stuff manually using offset and variation
@johnkooper

Strum iseemsl ike a good upgrade but I think youll still need to adjust manually the notes if you want to really humanize it ... good vid
@LillianFrances
@LillianFrances 11 ай бұрын
hey John! thx for the follow :] yes I feel ya on that. tried to brainstorm an easy way to add variation to the note starts but didn't come up with anything (anyone reading this got any ideas?). Span's variation would be perfect for that but it's changing the end note time not start note... so doesn't particularly help in this case. At any rate, glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers!
@LillianFrances
@LillianFrances 11 ай бұрын
oh wait I've got it, in the pitch & time tab (just to the left of the transformation tool tab) you have the humanize option, just adjust the humanize % a bit to give it that human feel.

a lot of this looks and feels advanced but doesn't sound too musical, right? a lot of these features are available in FL studio, for example and it sounds so musical.
@LillianFrances
@LillianFrances 11 ай бұрын
The most musical ones are definitely arpeggiate and strum, with things like recombine and connect being more random and better for experimental stuff and interesting idea generation. I also wasn't putting too much effort into making them sound more musical haha but I'm sure with a little bit more time and thought I could have gotten them more usable in a musical context. I haven't worked in FL before, but do you? curious what you think makes it sound more musical in FL that's not translating into live. thx for chiming in lost stories :]

I'm sure the algorithm rewards having the earliest video on a subject. I'm sure if she had more time to play with it first, she might have found more musical examples.

@@LillianFrances oh, absolutely. please don’t get me wrong. i wasn’t at all judging the musicality of this demo. i watched almost all the live 12 demos that were out at the time & almost all of them felt a bit random every time someone used the Connect or Ornament feature in the midi tools, for example. also, i completely understand that everyone who has been kind enough to put up the demos, barely had any time with it. also, that musicality is a very subjective thing! any rate, i love your work & i’m looking forward to more live 12 related content from you.

The midi tools would be more appealing if they were automatable which they are not. That would at least make up for their failure to generate anything remotely interesting.

Maam...I am going to be honest. I started this video with "No not another whining girl making silly Live 12 video" and then said to myself ok don't be rude and started playing it. To my effect on prejudice, the video from yesterday made by another girl was insanely irritating. Unlike the other girl from the Live 12 video, you had exactly the right amount of humor, to-the-point eloquent explanations, and no silly or stupid complaints. Maam I am going to bookmark your channel. Keep up the good work - it was refreshing to see a nice lady with real know-how in Live. Respect.
