A little-known design that could be a good fit for this series is the NERO orbital rescue spaceplane. This was a 1962 concept by MIT, which stands for Near Earth Rescue & Operations and was meant to be a rapid-response craft to perform time-critical operations in orbit, fulfilling a similar role to a coast guard. The proposal is very detailed and contains full design schemes, mission profiles and other details. The NERO spaceplane itself was to be a two-man lifting body, strongly resembling an enlarged Northrop M2-F2, which was one of the experimental lifting-bodies being tested by NASA at the time. NERO had an integral jet engine to improve its range in atmosphere, and carried a small payload bay which could transfer critical supplies to spacecraft or stations, or be configured for passengers, in which case it could fit two rescued crewmen. Orbital manoeuvres were to be done with a small transfer stage, as the NERO itself had only the jet engine; this stage is very similar to the one planned for Boeing's X-20 Dyna-Soar. The launch platform for NERO was supposed to be a Titan III-C, which is a known quantity and should be quite reproducible in KSP. IRL, they chose Titan because it used storable fuels in its upper stages, allowing the Titan-Nero to be kept on the launch pad for up to two weeks at T-minus-3: this was the key to giving NERO the fast response times it needed. I think this would be a perfect fit for this series: it's a neat what-if whose intended role would make for an exciting video. For added excitement, you could put the spacecraft whose crew it must rescue into a fatal orbital trajectory, giving the rescue some real life-or-death stakes! Love the content, by the way, keep it up!

The space shuttle used the aj10-190 engine as an oms engine which used monomethylhydrazine and dinitrogen tetroxide as a fuel. It was hypergolic and pressure-fed, but not monopropellant.
@jeffhurckes1903 жыл бұрын
The AJ10 on the OMS of the shuttle is not monoprop, it burns hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide. It's hypergolic, like the Gemini craft and in-game analog of them being the Bobcat and Cheetah engines. So you were more faithful to the design than you thought.

Space Shuttle did not use Monopropellant for it's OMS. The Space Shuttle did use 2 components that would, when mixed, ignite without the need for a spark, so called hypergolic fuel. Monopropellant is a single fluid that ignites when in contact with a catalyst but the catalyst remains and all the thrust comes from the Monopropellant.
