One thing that should be mentioned is that the Oberth effect is not programmed in the KSP simulation. Only basic Newtonian physics are programmed. The Oberth effect is a side effect of physics and this simulation shows it perfectly. Same for gravity assists. It's not like unlocking a secret level. It's already in the mechanics of the simulation! That's one thing I love about KSP. Only the basic physics rules are programmed. The rest arises by itself!
@wneubert25 жыл бұрын
I think you are right and I made a comment above that questions whether we saw the Oberth effect at all.
@wneubert25 жыл бұрын
I deleted my posts because I've been studying this and am convinced I was not right. I was thinking the engine is more powerful at high velocity and would then create more DV at the PE. But no, it creates the same DV but at the PE, this same DV represents more kinetic energy. So, like you said, it's in the mechanics of the simulation.

well, you're super lucky cuz for me, it was impossible. in my situation, I was in such a weird inclination and Gilly's apoapsis would take out a lot of fuel, meaning that I had to risk it entirely and try not to end up going out of Eve's SOI, and I decided to completely give up and try again tomorrow. I think it's more of "luck based on whether you think of every single thing that could thwart your attempt at getting to it, or it's gonna be a bit harder than the mun and it should be no problem.
@skyearthocean58152 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminsantillo-herbert2680 Yeah, it's like trying to hit a pea from across a field. You might try extending the apoapsis above Gillys orbit and then creating a maneuver node at apoapsis so and tweaking it till you get an encounter.

It took me 350 m/s to Eve escape, and my Kerbin closest approach was 318,000 m, but with an inclination adjustment and a retrograde + radial in burn of about 390 m/s led me to a periapsis of 40,000 m over Kerbin. With 2 flybys, one for capture and one for land, I landed with 170 ablator spent. P.S I had the Gravioli module already unlocked, as I visited an extra biome on mun, and got a total of about 5000 science from this mission!

Matt you secretive mad genesis. I found that I had already had one of these crafts that I started about 1.5 years ago. Tested it last night on a sand box but it failed as Bob was stuck i orbit of Kerbin at the end of the mission. Out of fuel. If I changed it to deorbit it would either explode, leave Kerbin or Bob is out of fuel in some orbit. Even tried to come on the left side of the planet to try to bleed off speed but it failed. When I left Gilly I had 95% or so of my fuel. So, I don't know where it all went. I know the burn back to Kerbin as I forced it use a bit but it couldn't have used that much. I remember the burn to set the inc at the dn/an was about 265. Whatever the error was if was after I left Gilly. Last time I went in a SSTO I had loads of fuel on the return. And yes, am looking at some of your other vids that aren't about SSTO's now.

In other news; RocketLab hard at work continuing to own the SLV market. The electron is slated for testing for reuse recovery via mid air recovery (maybe after 4 or 5 missions of data gathering they will have the data and confidence to put it into action). I don't know what the details are for what's planned on being reused (entire stage, engines only, stage with engines replaced, idk). Being 3D printed, should be interesting to see if the entire stage is able to undergo refurbishment, ofc that's a while away but those NZ folks always amaze. I therefore challenge you Matt to create a helicopter in KSP and successfully use said craft to do a mid-air recovery of a rocket!

Awesome video, but I'm really confused how you're able to get a Kerbin encounter at all at 20:30. I get that the point of dropping your periapsis close to Eve is to maximize the Oberth effect, but how is it that you can do a simple prograde burn from that periapsis and still manage to get a Kerbin encounter? Especially when your inclination is already so awkward after coming back from Gilly, and the ejection angle seems totally arbitrary, and you didn't have to wait a really long time for a certain launch window... I tried replicating your steps after launching from Gilly but couldn't get an encounter like yours at all, so I wonder if I missed something. Normally when I do missions like this I get myself in an equatorial circular orbit around Eve and use Alex Moon's launch window planner to calculate everything. I'm always baffled whenever I see a video of someone doing an interplanetary transfer on the fly!

Currently trying to do a mun flyby so I might try to get a probe on an interplanetary journey. I already have 2 in the kerbol system, one still has power

I already have 4 person (Kerbal) command capsule, and still haven’t received any contracts to go outside of the Kerbin system yet. So I haven’t attempted to go to any other planet yet in my career mode. So should I just do my own missions? I worry I’ll run out of funds if I do whatever I want without missions.

Do missions.sooner or later you get a duna mission

I did not realize you had missions in ksp career mode. I thought that you got funds and then got as far as you could until you ran out and deleted the world.

And. One of the reasons I started playing ksp is becouse I saw your videos and I was like: "I can explore the solar system!? On my own!? I can do stupid stuff! I NEED IT!"

How do I get off of Eve? Is it even theoretically possible to make an SSTO from Eve? Like a lander that is an SSTO and meets up with a mothership. I should add I haven't went to Eve yet.

.... never thought about going to Gilly with my ~6000m/s in LKO Mun-Multi-Biome-Hopper .... that will be fun, thanks =)

Just spent hours preparing for this mission, and getting all the way to Gilly, and then I crashed and exploded on my landing. And for some reason I'm stupid and didnt quicksave. FML

Apparently setting up refueling station at minmus orbit before leaving kerbin wasn't my smartest idea
@WeAreLegion19045 жыл бұрын
You should have done an inclination correction burn before you did a prograde burn when your apoapsis was furthest away from EVE. Your Gilly capture burn would have been far lower but knowing you, you just didn't care :)
@Masterfully14 жыл бұрын
What isn't explained is how to get your apoapsis around Eve initially pointing towards the sun.
