For some reason I decided that an 80m long Space Station would be best-assembled using an SSTO in 1 launch.

KRAKEN SOLUTION HERE!! Matt, there is a simple solution to the Kraken death shake problem. There is no need for strut spamming, or turning off auto-strut or SAS, warping, etc Notice, the problem only happens with complex ships or when ships are combined/docked. Two docked ships effectively create one complex ship. What they all have in common are multiple possible control points. The problem appears to be the result of confusion/competition between those control parts (command pods, probe cores, docking ports, etc.) as to whom is in control of the ship. SOLUTION: Simply right click on ANY part with the option "Control from here", and assign control to that part. It doesn't matter which one you choose, and the Kraken goes away. It's just that simple. I discovered this solution years ago, and have not lost a single ship to it since. Good luck!

@@justsomedude4547 You are most welcome, my friend. Please spread the word. I have been trying to bring this simple method to Matt Lowne's attention for years, but apparently he doesn't bother reading comments. He still needlessly loses craft to this issue regularly. It's a shame. If you find ways to improve it, please let me know. So far it has been 100% effective.

Christian Letzerich The kraken is the animistic personification of ksp’s bugs and glitches. Like most games, KSP is held together with duct tape and elbow grease. It works fine for simpler craft, but, as things get more complicated, the game has a harder time keeping everything working properly. The more pieces you have interacting in a craft, the more places there are for something to go wrong. With massive craft, mods like Kerbal Joint Reinforcement help by making the craft much more rigid. This can prevent some of the more dangerous and destructive glitches and interactions.

This was tested by someone a long time ago I'm pretty sure. May have been Scott Manley or Danny2462, I don't remember. Long story short, though: No. The simplest reason is that the game puts the centre of a craft (and thus the point at which it calculates altitude) at the centre of mass or somewhere thereabouts. If you build a ring around a celestial body, the COM will be deep inside said body and the craft will likely explode. Realistically, though, you wouldn't be able to get that far before exceeding the physics range or encountering the Kraken, or a number of other issues.

Matt Lowne, I have the same problem with my massive Station here. I used physics range extender to increase the area in which the game precisely calculates physics from something like 100m to 300 or 400 and it solved most of the problems but this still happened but much less often. I suggest you give it a try, but disable it once you stop using the craft

I had a similar issue when building a massive space station. It holds over 500 kerbals (560 if I remember correctly) and was assembled by docking massive sections in orbit. When trying to put the finishing touches (literally pieces just made of girder units with docking ports on the end to park space-planes...), the entire station would wobble to pieces when I got close to it. It's a beautiful piece of useless junk (on my PC it takes 7 real seconds for one in-game second to pass) holding many, many kerbals. I still view it as my greatest kerbal accomplishment, and making something big enough to be rejected by the physics engine is an accomplishment in itself. If people are interested in seeing it, I'd be happy to share my save file. It only uses stock parts.

So you emptied the giant fuel tanks with docking ports at the bottom to make the station easier to get into space and then added giant fuel tanks with engines at the bottom to get the craft into space. Matt, I want to point out a potential solution to both of those problems; use the station's filled fuel tanks as the ascent fuel. Stick a drone to the bottom docking port that basically just functions as the engine that can detach and deorbit itself later. Saves weight and probably lower part count.

I’ve loved KSP for years, and I’ve admired you and many others building these amazing ships and stations, getting into perfect orbits and getting to other planets, I bought KSP for Xbox since my laptop can’t run a game, and seeing that it’s a wee bit harder on Xbox I can’t seem to do it, but keep up your work my man! Much love!

Matt, the formula for gravity generated by a ring in space is "a = 4π(r^2) / T" or when rearranged, "T = 4π(r^2) / a" This formula literally tells you how fast the ring should go to simulate earth gravity (T is the number of seconds to do one rotation) Meaning the formula for your ring is (Presuming gravity is supposed to be 9.81m/s^2 like earth): T = 4πr^2 / 9.81 By my calculations, r should be 8.5 times the length of the cabin piece that you used to connect the rings to the main core (In meters). Just plug in the numbers, and you have the rotation period to simulate earth gravity. Given the size of the ship, I think that the sped up footage looks about right, maybe a tad fast but reasonable

Auto-strut is not what causes ships to shake themselves to pieces. Connecting large structures are very few points is what causes ships to shake themselves to pieces. You have to remember that with actual struts pieces, you bridge a loop in the ship part hierarchy, which is great because you can connect neighboring parts together. What auto-strut is good for is when you have something sticking way out from the ship (like a tall booster) and you think to yourself, "well realistically this whole thing would be one large structure that would not really be able to flex as much as the stock joints do" and you want to connect then end of that thing to the root part or to a heavy part. If you were to auto-strut a bunch of parallel arms, they don't strut to each other- just the root part or the heaviest part- hence, the ship shaking itself to bits.

This idea came about from a reply to Coffee Dude. Just a back up idea challenge How about you launch some kind of large payload to earth orbit but every booster section is actually a space plane of some kind. (Can reuse them for symmetry, could make the center tank one or leave it, planes should be detachable when empty but could be interesting to have them as a chunk.

When I was playing ksp (I don't now because life) I once did a build similar to this and i got tired of it constantly failing for no reason other than kraken so i broke it up into several different stages like the cor went up then the rest of the station then refueling was also the same result so the solution to said problem is really see how small big you can go with the kraken attacking (as well as restarting the game somewhat helped) and then just do several of those until its fully refueled plus if you want to I heard there is an actual refuel station under the bridge at KSC that if connected to it would allow you refuel the refueler and make one continuous mission otherwise its send up a refueler, refuel station, bring it back, recover vessel, go to wherever refueler is and rinse and repeat

Matt, you definitely earned a glass of whisky for your perseverance in making this craft. It looks pretty, really nice for a static shot. If only it didn't suffer from Kraken-itis I use auto strut on my rockets and spaceplanes and it works without fail. I am using Ferram Aerospace Research, so it is modded physics, but autostrut has saved many spaceplane prototypes from the wing wobble and warping Kraken. So far, no Kraken attacks on my rockets with auto strut. I don't think it would work with your station though, it's just too big and complex, particularly with rotors.

Matt, maybe you should've just sent the station up in seperate pieces. Something that big already barely fits in the rocket hangar, so I think it'd be both safer and more efficient if you just sent it in chunks. That also means you can reconfigure its design at any time.

If you want to play the footage at a higher speed in vegas, you could get an audio sample of the engines and overlay it in the stems. The engine sound seems to repeat quite quickly so you wouldn't need to sample a huge section of it.
