KSP Using STARSHIP to recover the HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE! | KSP RSS/RO

Hubble is dead and we killed it. (Well not really but I liked the dramatic tones of that sentence)
Someone on discord set me the challenge of safely recovering the Hubble Space Telescope, so I decided to go full SpaceX and use Starship to grab the aging spacecraft.
This was seriously fun to do (except for all of the pain using Starship but we don't talk about that)
All done in KSP Real Solar System with Realism Overhaul.

Yeah someone else mentioned this, I rescaled starship to RO sizes, but neglected to do the same with Hubble, so starship is the correct size, Hubble is stock sized which was a massive oversight by me

I read through the comments and watched the whole video once, but I didn't get the answer to one question I had: What are the most complex/expensive changes to be able to do it in real life? Besides building any custom capture adapters? Rough fuel and weight? I assumed that due to no launch cargo, the fuel savings would help leave some for the de-orbit burn. To me, obvious that you need a really long (slow) initial slowdown due to the extra weight (+50%) of the Hubble on the way down. Would the recovery flight be possible on a light launch of some bulkier satellite, as a Uber go-home trip? Did you add fuel or engine capacity? Maybe a CEO level summary, so we can ask him to fund it? :) Excellent work. BTW how long did this exercise take? a week?

The stock sizes are correct. Take the real world size and scale it down to 62.5% of that, then these are the sizes in KSP, with the planet being smaller and everything. Tundra provides a diameter of just over 5m, which in turn would scale up to 9

Stock sizes aren’t correct for RO/RSS (Realism Overhaul/Real Solar System) which is what this is :) no small planets here! hence why I had to rescale the parts 1.6x in order for them to be their real life sizes. As you’ve said this brings it from 5m to 9m.

Apologies if this has been asked already, but how do you get the shiny textures for your procedural parts? I use procedural parts a lot and I've never seen anything that looks that gorgeous. Is it a texture pack? If it is, which texture pack is it?

you need to have your reflective setting turned up a little bit in the base settings to get it to shine, also in the recolor settings make sure you have metallic turned up a bit, could also have video card driver problems, but that shiney is part of the stock Proc parts textures.... Ive ran into the same problem myself in the past, update drivers, adjust graphic settings . also adjust them when the rocket it on the pad because it will adjust in real time making life easy

OMG... I presume that the scale of each "ship" is 1:1. So Hubble can EASILY fit within a Starship. Wow. I wonder what the rights of salvage are with Hubble, when it finally does go dead. Could SpaceX salvage it, restore it, and put it back in space? What could they do with a restored Hubble? Maybe modify it to work against targets on Mars (and the Moon)? Hmmmm... the possibilities. But could it LEGALLY be done, as per maritime or other relevant laws?

Ships are not to scale, he said in another comment that he forgot to scale up the Hubble model "from stock proportions to RO proportions". Real life Hubble could still fit inside of a Cargo Starship's payload bay, although quite more snugly than this. Regarding the possibility of actually recovering Hubble like this, I think our best hope would be to have SpaceX do it as a sort of demonstration to show the capabilities of Starship to bring space junk back to Earth, with the added benefit of contributing to the preservation of such an historical spacecraft. It would likely require the permission from NASA, but considering that the alternative would be having it disintegrate in the atmosphere, I think it's not that farfetched of an idea. Another possibility would be to have an entity like NASA itself or the Smithsonian pay for the mission, but considering how tight on budget these tend to be I consider this less likely. Or maybe it could be funded via donations from philanthropists and/or the community.

@@Carnasa thanks for adequately accepting feedback. I was wondering a lot on how to return Hubble in real life. So I expected that grabbing the Hubble should be done in some more accurate way. Like with a manipulator. But in KSP it might be difficult, so why not to detach a drone from Starship that could approach and dock with the bottom of the Hubble where the last repair mission left that docking port exactly for this purpose. Then this drone could accurately get inside Starship and dock with it. Kerbals can attach struts for safety :) Another important thing is Starship reentry AoA. It should be much higher than you do. I guess it was around 60 or 70 degree. At your reentry profile it would definitely burn up.
