Preston. Thank you for this. And, once again, you’re on the correct path of thought. You referenced the many different interpretations of this song; and that, in itself, acknowledges the essence of Tool. The lyrics certainly come from a personal space for Maynard, but they’re written in a way that can be interpreted differently by different people and applied to their unique circumstances. This song helped save my marriage. I always liked this song. But, as my marriage approached a crash landing, The Grudge helped me through the darkest time of my life. At that point, I truly understood the song, for me, on an emotional level. Every. Fucking. Detail. To me, this song represents our desire to hold onto grudges as a feeling of power over those who have hurt us and the need to release that anger and let go in order to heal our wounds and repair those relationships. Even the otherworldly scream bear the end- I’ve learned to appreciate understand and feel every last second of it. It wasn’t some self-indulgent display of an amazing vocalist. That was the honest primal desire and attempt to exorcise the pain of transgression and the resulting anger- to rid oneself of their grudge- so that they may heal and become whole again. So that the subject can move on and repair the damaged relationship. He wants nothing more in life and that urge can be felt through every last second of that scream. I cannot count the number of tears I’ve shed at that point in that song. It still rocks me to my core. Thank you for your incredible reviews Preston. Keep on keepin’ on Brother.

Jon-Paul, thanks for explaining Tool perfectly, and with a very personal story to wrap it all up. Maynard never tells people the reasons behind his songs for the exact situation you were in. The meeting if Tools songs are never if rarely one dimensional. The image between the stone, cornerstone, the one or many grudges, the eroding of everything by the water transmutating it, being fluid in life, taking the lead and making something beautiful/rich out of it. It inspires me today to make sure my friendships and loves are built with meaningful stones that will withstand the sands of time.

Makes a lot of sense. I've been in group therapy sessions and heard people SCREAM and RAGE out their grudges, addictions, darkness, anger - even done it myself. Holding on to a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Every single bad emotion you feel happens in you, not in them, so you have to bear all the crap you want someone else, who knows nothing of your pain, to have. Letting go is freedom. Holding on is emotional self-imprisonment.

Im not too much into tool’s music released before aenima. Its not bad and that period is very important in the context of their history, showing their evolution. But its too dark and depressively destructive for me, though very talented already. But after Maynard overcame some psychological problems and stopped expressing mainly pain and opposition, and added spirituality - tool’s art started resonating with me way much more. So, as i said, the early period is an important part of the whole experience, but not that satisfying and harmonic to be influenced by.

The whole format for Lateralus is based on the progression through the Tree of Life. The first node is Malkuth (Kingdom). The tenth node is Keter/Kether (Crown). So "Choose One or Ten... The One, The Ten" is the first and last, the alpha and omega, but it also implies that the Tree is inverted back on top of itself. That the Kingdom of Earth/Matter is not just a trap of drudgery, grime, pain, depression, and anxiety, but actually integral to the process of releasing attachments to those things, i.e. "Give away the stone" and "leaden grudges into gold". Saturn, in astrology, represents the intense manifestation of karmic debt "Drags you down like a stone, or lifts you up again". So all our misdeeds are judged and punished with impunity. In short, it's payback time. However, by working through them, doing the work, serving the time, or generally analyzing our own flaws, we are given the key to break out of the illusion of pain for our earthly toil, allowed a salvation, or a baptism "Let the waters kiss and transmutate". And if we grip to our egos, our pride, define our realities by our blind spots, "This cold and fated anchor", and refuse to let the illusion of reality dissolve around us, then the Cosmic forces will put you in your place, "Sinking Deeper" in our personal prisons. Eventually we must Let GO of the idea of control, the need to attempt to define or manipulate things which are ultimately outside of our basic understandings.

Also regarding Saturn, when Maynard references Saturn coming back around, I believe he’s referring to what is called the Saturn Return in astrology. Saturn takes 29.5 years to make a full revolution around the sun. When you are around 29.5 years old, give or take, Saturn will conjunction your natal Sun, which usually shakes things the fuck up in your life. Saturn is about responsibility, limitations, karma... he’s like a judgmental father, or the teacher with the most difficult assignments that you hated but you learned the most from. Basically, the return will show you where you’ve fucked up in life and where you’ve succeed and you will choose to either take accountability and continue to aim toward becoming your best Self, or you can hold a grudge or become resentful and turn your back on personal responsibility, which can only bring ruin. People usually notice a lot of changes around 30 years old....

It depends on my mood, but we came up with: if I got exiled/marooned/whatever and I could only have the music of one artist or band, who would it be? Who could I listen to, over and over? Yep. You said... nobody even comes close to TooL.. they're "just different" - and I also like the Pink Floyd mention - something I think a lot of people would agree with. I first heard TooL in '96 on the radio - Stinkfist.. during the grunge era, and was immediately drawn in thinking "holy shit, what is this?!?!" - unlike anything I'd ever heard before. Once I began to dig into the lyrics and put the meaning to the depth of the music, it literally changed my life, and as I've told many people, became a road map to higher consciousness. And it is virtually impossible to rate their songs, as they're each an epic journey of their own (at least since Aenima). I just stumbled on you and I'm loving watching your reactions, because it's reminding me of why I love TooL so much, and the overwhelming feelings it induces. As for this song's meanings, it's probably already been said, but it revolves around the "Saturn Return" - a supposed astrological event that can be learned about by googling it. It's said to happen every 29 years (iirc) in our lifetime, and I can say that I personally had this experience myself. He's referencing the choice we have to hold onto our grudges, our old ways, the destructive ways of the mind and ego, and to sink deeper into this cycle.... or to LET GO, transmutate, and rise higher, the way of spirit and higher consciousness.

If you wanna know a band that comes close to tool is Maynard James Keenan’s other band A PERFECT CIRCLE. it’s like tools sister it a a feminine softer sound to it but his voice really shines in this band. a really good song is THE PACKAGE
@jennainundies6 жыл бұрын
Davin Dew A-motherfucking-men!!! I have described the two as exactly that. Tool is the more divine masculine and A Perfect Circle as the divine feminine. The Package is my favourite song, their live performance is the best version of the song as well. The Hollow & Pet & 3 Libras.. gaaaaaah 💦 I really think he needs to also listen to The Humbling River by Puscifer, and if you haven’t then you need to. Tool songs have a different meaning and feeling every time you listen to them. I think you could study tool lyrics for years and never fully understand them lol
@shadowninjarider3746 жыл бұрын
Maynard and tool have been on a journey through the shadow....or, the spirit world, if you like that term better. They have learned the secrets to the fibinatchi sequence, 46 and 2, the eye of Saturn, ascension, the serpents of light and so much more. The music and lyrics are like a audio adaptation of their journey. Their music can be appreciated on every lvl, but the underlying message woven through all their music is very very spiritual and meant to be seen through the 3rd eye. This would take at least an hour of writing to explain the short version, and that would be cruel butchering of the thesis. Only adepts of the highest rank of the opened 3rd eye (white and red) would understand.
@OrphanCrippler16 жыл бұрын
@@shadowninjarider374 lol. He doesnt believe in the third eye and all that bullshit. He simply reads and follows Jungs teachings. He follows some of the Gnostic teachings and shit, but thats about it.
@@OrphanCrippler1 Dude....tool LITERALLY has a song titled third eye. JS
@shadowninjarider3746 жыл бұрын
@@OrphanCrippler1 I mean.....really....how can someone really say they listen to any of Maynard's creations and say that he doesn't believe in the 3rd eye. Yes, he has read Jung, yes he has read the gnostic....but c'mon brah. Maynard has been into all the deep shit. Deep ass shit like you can't even imagine. As a long time mucisian and lyricist myself, I tell you to go deeper, then go DEEPER, then go plus ultra DEEPER, then.....go deeper still. Dont stop till you push the envelope and watch it bend. Then you gotta spiral out till you become a perfect circle. Then once your tool becones a Pucifer, you push it till it becomes a Tool again. You can't do this completely sober, so do some H and try to make it through the shadow and come out 46+2. If you fail to understand....just stop listening to Tool altogether and switch to....IDK....justin beeber or whatever.....dam kids these days....

it's about your Astrological Saturn Return, when Saturn returns to the placement in your birth chart where it was when you were born... your Saturn sign and house describes the lessons you must master by the time it makes its first return, between the ages of 27-31... if you haven't learned your hard lessons, you will be knocked down and humbled by Saturn.... that's what i get from this song, as an Astrology buff....
@crusnikrage23376 жыл бұрын
Yeah makes sense. At 27 i had a dream i was to die at 28 from my heroin addiction. I am 37 now. From 27 to 30 was my second enlightenment and my first death. I as we mostly are still learning of the world and ourselves. But the bleesing/curse of the understanding of my perception of my experience of my existence just seems to be a confirmation of the information i find and finds me. That tells me this is the time to utilize my knowledge acquired to put it to the test until its time to learn again. Ok enough ranting. Just thought I'd mention this.
@jwilliama44275 жыл бұрын
Lioness, you are the only person IN THE WORLD that I heard gets the point of the song. The importance of that period is so profound especially when it comes to people who's had a rough childhood. I have a silly habit of saying "They missed their Saturn" when an acquaintance who's 35 or so is so hung up on who did them wrong along the way that it literally is keeping them from moving forward. As you probably know, the ancient name for Saturn is El. And the Saturnal cults refered to El as God. When I was 29 I had a son whom I named Elijah to mark the return of Saturn. Elijah meaning "My god is king." I think you're the second person I told this to. The first being my older brother who still blames me for "taking mommy away from me." He's dysfunctional as hell and has a trail of ruined relationships because he missed this very important step in maturation. Sorry for the rant, like I said you're the first I've known who gets the song so. I'm excited.

This song rides the line of not flowing well and no other group of artists could make this work, let alone play it so well that it becomes a masterpiece. It takes the Tool Touch. I've heard others try to play this and no matter how hard they try, they always take it left of center instead of riding that line.

This one happens to be my favorite of theirs. To me, the lyrics are about the futility of anger and its destructive results, whether it be on the scale of an individual or entire nations. That scream just before the outtro always struck me as the primal way to "let it go."

I take this song to mean that there are things that burden us and weigh us down. Things that we hold onto even things we’ve done ourselves. Shameful things. Things we aren’t proud of. Things we need to let go of in order to move forward. Learning to forgive others is hard sometimes but learning to forgive ourselves is even harder. Once you can forgive yourself you can evolve.
