Excellent reaction. Your first exposure to DT is something you’ll never forget. It’s so unique and completely mind blowing. And this isn’t even their best song (though I would put it in their top third). Song is super deep as well. The drummer, Mike Portnoy, struggled with alcoholism from a young age and this song (and several others) chronicles his journey through the AA 12 step program and his road to recovery. Glass Prison is the first 3 steps, and the journey continues through Dying Soul, Root of All Evil, Repentance, and Shattered Fortress throughout the next 4 albums. As far as where to go next, that’s a difficult question. Depends on if your looking for an epic adventure (they have a lot of songs over 15 minutes long that take you on quite a journey) or something a bit shorter and more accessible (and by shorter, I mean less than 10 minutes long, but longer than 6). They really don’t have a bad song in their repertoire, though some are a bit weak but only in comparison with their better music. DT at their weakest is generally steps above most bands at their strongest.
@MrChoobsabre5 жыл бұрын
I feel like since this is where he started, he should journey through the rest of the Twelve Step Suite!! Edit: this would probably get Preston accustomed to transitions between tracks as well :p

I'm really happy you liked it. Dream Theater is definitely one of those bands that you either love or hate. Most people don't like that the songs are all over the place since it progressive metal, or don't like James' voice. Dream Theater has a massive catalogue and there is a ton of great music in there. For pure instrumental with great transitions you cant go wrong with The Dance of Eternity, or for just great overall performance As I Am and Pull Me Under are a couple of my favorites, as well as the whole Scenes From a Memory in 1 listen

I second to that! It's near impossible to dislike that song :D

Oohh yes do it! This is the one. Also count of Tuscany, change of seasons, stream of consciousness, in the name of god etc. just depends on which one you get to first. And these are just the longer ones. But actually six degrees the whole song!!

Dream Theater is the only band that I have listened to to date, that almost every time I listened to a song of theirs I hadn't listened to before, I decided it was the best song I'd ever heard.

So joyful to see someone blown away by one of my favorite bands. They have a massive discography, and pending on who you talk to, everyone has a different favorite (except the Astonishing, avoid that lol)
@adarshbhandary3415 жыл бұрын
This is maybe in their top 10? Maybe... I mean it because they are the definition of variety and awesomeness! I'd recommend my top 10 as: As I am Pull me under (Not my personal fav but people love it) Octavarium (24 min long) In the Name of God Stream of Consciousness (Instrumental) This Dying Soul (Super Heavy just like Glass Prison) The Ministry of Lost Souls (I just love this song) A Change of Seasons (Dream Theater in short) A Nightmare to Remember (Amazing dark theme song) Hollow Years (Live at Budokan Version ONLY) (The original is good but that particular live version is beyond brilliant) These were my top 10. Anyone else is free to recommend more. Have a good day people!

This is the only reaction video I’ve ever (intentionally) re-watched. It was just as entertaining the second time. I smiled through damn near the whole 13+ minutes. I got into Dream Theater because a friend played me their live album “Once in a Livetime” and their amazing concept album “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.” They both blew my mind like this. So, when Six Degrees came out, I bought it on release day. This is the opening track and like you, my jaw about hit the floor. And I actually knew what to expect. I was still blown away. This is actually part one of a five song suite about drummer Mike Portnoy’s struggle with and recovery from alcoholism. Each song was on a different album. The next one, which is highly recommended, is “This Dying Soul.”

I remember having that very same reaction when that goddamn breakdown came the first time I heard that album. I mean, I already was used to all that guitar-keyboard crazy stuff, but I never thought they would come up with something like that. It was very pleasant to hear and you just brought me back to those memories. Thanks. :)

@platonicdescartes5 жыл бұрын
Their most popular song, by far, is "Pull Me Under". But which Dream Theater song is their best is strongly subjective. Ask 10 different fans, and I'll bet you would get at least 6 different answers to that question. Obviously some people are going to recommend "Metropolis Part 1", but you may also want to check out their most popular song as well so that you have a frame of reference for their different styles.
@marine66805 жыл бұрын
Do we have another Dream Theater convert? Best song? Depends on who you ask. It is a good song. I am partial to the entirety of "In the Presence of Enemies". DT has a wide range of styles, from the harder stiff like this, so softer more ballad type songs... Sometimes both in the same song. Enjoy your trip further into DT, and we can give you suggestions for more progressive metal bands. I haven't seen many react to Symphonic X yet, and DT isn't well covered either. I want to see someone react to "The Shadow Hunter" by Angra as well.

I've listened to quite a bit of Dream Theater, but this song consistently stays my favorite. So sick! The instrumental jam before the final verse lasts so long and keeps up the energy so well it makes you simultaneously think, "When is this gonna end?" and "I don't want it to end"
