With KTM building the new 790 at CF Moto in China it begs the question of what other components in the rest of their line up are made in China. I really struggle with the capital outlay vs quality and reliability topic. If we are spending our hard earned cash on these machines they need to deliver on a number of balanced fronts in my opinion. I really really want to try a KTM but just don’t want to spend $20K of my own money on the experiment.

Had the KTM and now have the BMW. Loved the KTM engine and great off road but just like with my other KTM's reliability was a big issue and soured me on the bike. A fragile adventure bike doesn't inspire confidence. The BMW isn't as exciting on the highway but it's far more comfortable and has been bulletproof reliable with amazing low speed performance. Overall the GS is just the better bike.

The pricing of the bikes is different in the US. MSRP is about 5k difference with the KTM being cheaper. I've ridden both and I prefer the KTM1290 S hands down over the BMW. I've owned both. BMWs are EXPENSIVE to have serviced. The tools are custom and expensive if you want to do the service yourself. I service myself or have my KTM serviced, depending if I have the time. Servicing the KTM doesn't break the bank. I do experience the shake if I let the handlebars go. I just don't let go of the handlebars. I move through stopped traffic effortlessly, but my hats off to your mad traffic filtering skills. I rode this KTM from Mexico to Canada and then back with no issues. I've not had any issues that originate with the bike's manufacture.

I'm currently an owner of 1290SAS and had S1000XR before. I think SAS version is much closer to XR with higher suspension travel. At the same time I had more than a week travel with R1250GS, so I can compare. XR and SAS's riding gives much more fun on the roads compare to GS. I disagree with V-Told about SAS engine - when you just ride, not pushing anything to its limits, your usable RMP range is relatively narrow - from 2500-3000 to 5000-5500 rpm. Above 6000rpm vibrations are not comfy. At 180 km/h speeds it feels buzzy as XR. I drive SAS in a city with heavy traffic (look vids in my account) and it feels inline with XR. I don't like big GS cilynders in filtering. I'm short (170cm) and SAS with adjustable seat height (2 positions of the seat + automatically adjustable preload) makes this version perfect to me.

Hi V-Told. Thanks for you video and your opinion. After having owned a KTM 990 adv during 12 years and many good and long trips in all conditions, last year, I bought a 1290 SAR. I like it a lot. I am 1,91 m so the riding position is perfect, better than the 990. I have done a couple of long trips with it and it was great, very comfortable, insanely fast when you want, funny, very polyvalent in all different situations, on the road, twisties, mountain roads, secondary roads, main roads and highway, in all great control. Out of the road, it is really very capable for such a big bike. I love the suspension, if you know how to deal with the settings, in some minutes, you can adapt it perfectly, just a couple of turns here and there, and ready to go. It is not so automatic as the GS or the SAS, that you can do it in the fly, but once you know how to do it, the quality of the suspension is very good. I never had a GS, I have ridden it a couple of times. It is very good machine, and good looking. For a KTM rider, you need to get used to it, but it comes quickly. I think the good thing of it is that whatever the bike you buy, it is difficult to make a mistake, due to the fact that all of them are very capable machines. The only thing I prefer from the KTM is that you don´t see many, especially the R version, and I like that, while you see many GS’s and it is just another GS, you don’t even take a look at them any more…. Greetings and good riding

Hi, thanks for sharing your view - I appreciate it and also believe that that last point about KTM SARs not being so popular on the roads may make them appeal to some. Myself included in fact. But there are quite a few quality features on top of that, and some that are very strong - also literally - like the amazing engine. If I had both BMW R1250GS and SAR, I would be tempted to choose a GS but likely would end up on a KTM every time. The sound, position, ease of shooting forward and uniqueness make it super exciting.

I had 35000 km on a 2019 model r1250gs with battery problem that i had to deal with a wrecker and had to carry jump starter until i found the problem .. corrosion on suspension springs even stored in a closed garage and some other minor issues so that it is also not perfect but I am sure that more reliable and bmw will better deal with the problems .. just traded with 2023 model 1290sas and no signal button issues no error messages due to the suspension preload etc. Overall it is really a fun bike .. far beyond than gs in terms of fun factor another world... it is stable enough until 230 with oem tires and top case. Better at cornering every speed (i am not just countersteering guy love to use body positioning), lower weight feel, a real quick shifter and smooth transmission, corner exists way way perfect, better wind protection for the head too less wind buffeting agains normal and adventure windshield of gs, slightly better heat management, better suspension for sport riding, longer distance by bigger fuel tank but with the same consumption only the downsides are worse breaks, more vibrations, stone seat :) so that less comfort and service .. for the people who loves to fun on a bike should definetely check 1290sas esp 2023 model which is less viby more stable and with no issues. Hi Vito! I watch all your videos and love it. First let me ask you, are you Italian ? My experience: I own and owned 4 GS so far and was going to by the KTM S version because I like everything of this bike, I like to go pretty fast and also I am cm 190 tall so I didn’t considering buying a Ducati Multistrada v4 because it’s small for me 😢. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I couldn’t buy the KTM because as soon as I did the test drive I observed a different general quality compare to my GS. Also approaching curves at high speed I felt the front suspension not very safely always compare with my GS. Of course I know that 3 hour of test ride isn’t enough for the right decision but nevertheless these two feelings made me change my mind 🤷🏼‍♂️😬😬. I have to wait for the new GS 1300 and spend once more much more money than KTM 🤷🏼‍♂️. Sorry for my English, I hope everything was clear. p.s. I drove the KTM in street mode, do you think I didn’t set up properly the bike ? Thanks 🙏

Hi, I'm not Italian - if I were, that would be likely the first thing that I would mention in my videos. But then I'd have to ride a Ducati, so a slight disadvantage there ;) I get your experiences of the front end of the bike. GS with its Telelever front suspension is amazing there. KTM needs a very specific rider that would appreciate its different character. Street mode sounds totally fine and there's nothing that can be done wrong I think. GS simply will suit more riders. I feel it's generally a more pleasant thing to ride in any circumstances. Just that sound... ;) All the best!

They’re two totally different bikes, just put my 1290 in for a gs12 adventure, it struck me as to how different these bikes are and why people compare the two, the ktm is a more exciting ride for sure, the gs does touring better in my opinion, the gs feels super stable on fast roads and motorways, the ktm territory is fast twisty roads!!! they both do what they do very well, now I’ve ridden both bikes at length I would say I’ll swap back and fourth between them, these two bikes are in a class of their own.

Good summary! Was going to buy a KTM SA 1290R. But then I rode the GS (identical to the one here btw) and had a better experience with the BMW dealer. Then I started reading and viewing videos about KTM horror stories. And a very much liked the BMW on the road vs the KTM, despite the rockin’ motor of the latter. I also rode Ducati MS V4S and Desert X (no dealer nearby), Triumph Tiger 900 and 1200 (no dealer nearby), Honda Africa Twin, and Kawasaki Versys (more streetbike aligned to the BMW XR). The GS cannot be defined by its spec sheet. Riding it long term is the only way to truly appreciate the capabilities that one bike has no right to possess on road and off. Used KTMs seem to sell for a song, whereas GS seems to hold its value better. BMW is more refined and better put together. Check out KTM switch gear as an example, leaking brake master cylinders, shoddy bearings, unreliable electronics and things falling off KTMs.

At first I thought that you were willing to switch from buying a KTM to BMW because of a dealer experience. Now I assume that it wasn't the only reason. Dealings with a dealer is still a marginal concern I believe. The rest - I see your points but GS can impress after the 1st meter ridden I think. It's such a different experience in terms of how it moves around, incredible. Then BMW is a huge manufacturer with a lot of background in the industry whereas KTM may at the same time have much more limited resources and hence the build quality. Which pains me to say. But when they work - and you may always happen to get a perfectly built one - their engines make them fly.

The Versys 1000 was very nice on the street. Good power, very smooth, good performance, good value. Very much UJM (universal Japanese motorcycle). Viceless, reliable, everyday bike. I liked riding it. Didn’t so much like looking at it. For that reason, in the Kawasaki stable I would maybe opt for the Ninja 1000SX sport tourer with the hard panniers. Very similar mechanically, but still with upright ergonomics. Other Japanese options might be the Suzuki GSX-S1000GX for pure street, or V-Strom 800 or 1050 from street with light adventure capability. Yamaha Tracer 9 GT. And then there are the European bikes…

Hard to disagree. Had a 2019 SAR, loved it but a little too tall and top heavy for me but very comfortable. Traded it for a new SAS in 2021. Easier to ride with lots of toys and tech - but purchase experience wasn’t great, optional extras took ages to arrive, lots of electronic teething issues (what error messages will I get today on start up and how many re-starts to clear them). Again dealer not amazing but struggling with staff turnover. When everything was working on a sunny day on the right road amazing - but quite tiring over long distance as it is so eager especially on back roads. Not as comfortable as the previous model R even with the comfort seats. Had the GS like the one in the video for a couple of days last summer. So, so easy to ride - and comfortable. Did everything very well indeed, felt classy - but TBH did lack excitement engine wise (but far from slow). However, just traded the KTM SAS in against a Desert X (depreciation absolutely horrendous!) which is obviously overpriced and from a “top trumps” perspective the lesser bike. The KTM just wants to go far too fast everywhere and I worry about the long term reliability (although great tech when it is all working). But most of all never induced a wow when I opened the garage door.
@VToldsMotoShow

Thanks for sharing. I would see a potential for a "wow" effect after installing an aftermarket exhaust on a KTM. Design-wise it's very personal. However, DesertX may have a lot of that effect in turn. I just had my first rides on one today and it's a pretty competent midsize adventure motorcycle I feel.

It got me thinking and I believe that it's possible due to GS's wide handlebar which some may need to bend forward more in order to reach as opposed to the position on a KTM with a narrower one. It seems like the most reasonable guess to me. But it may just as well be something totally else and a combination of factors.

nice review, nice video quality - thanks! The comparison of motor bikes is not really a thankfull job, as it is so an individual topic. Taking into consideration BMW GS and KTM SAS, for me is KTM a much better, sportier adventure bike, much quicker and much more powerfull on twisty and straight roads, much more value for money, an engine which pulls and goes like hell up to 9.500 rpm. Not really relevant for me is low speed handling (in big cities!??), these are both not really urban city bikes. It could be relevant off road, but you have there SAR and GS Adventure to compare. Again something very individual: look at design of GS with these cilinder heads coming out "half a meter" left and right. It looks simply horrible, adding all this plastic edges, metal bars, grids above and below.... this looks like a never finished project. Appologize to the people who like this "design", but that´s really strange and not well designed. About suspension: GS is in deed a soft, comfortable chair, for sure much softer than a KTM SAS. But is there any road feedback you ever get from BMW GS?? I tried it already couple of times and it is always the same feeling - especially compared to KTM - there is zero feedback from the road. nothing, niente, nada... so I summarized, for people who like a soft chair bike with good traveling performance and like beeing disconnected from the road, they could be fine with GS. For people who like a sharp, sporty, very fast (adventure) bike for a lot of fun and active road feedback, they take KTM. All the best to all of you, what ever your choice is.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow Жыл бұрын
I actually personally like a soft chair very much. I wish KTM was softer suspension- and seat-wise. But that's right that judging a lot of things depends on one's taste and preference. So the key is to describe why you like certain things the way you do and then most can decide whether this is how they like them too or not. You know - to have common understanding in the first place. Thanks for the input! Cheers!

@@VToldsMotoShow look, I came from a Kawa Ninja SX1000 and I never though I ever could like or need an adventure or travel-enduro bike. A lot of people recommended to try 1250GS, best bike ever - they said. I tried 2-3 times and one thing which is true, it is better, let say easier to steer for any kind of driver at very short curves, low speed easier to handle, may be at short distance curves, twisty roads.... But ☝️☝️☝️.... if you like to drive long, high speed curves and to compete from time to time with strong sporty bikes, to feel and be connected to the road, no way with a GS, sorry... but no way. I tried twice the KTM 1290 SAS within 2 weeks... and I simply ordered. That's a rocket, that's an emotion, that's simply power without end.... KTM a “better value”? Not in my part of the world! When you look at resale values on KTM SAs here, the residual value is much lower. They sell very cheaply. Value is derived from total cost of ownership over the product’s life, not initial purchase cost.

Like some parts or tool brands do, for example - specifically indicating where it is made - china, india, taiwan, japan, slovenia, slovakia etc. The fact that KTM applies different standards to its bikes, doesn't require a proof anymore

Very nice review but I was a little amazed that you paid such scant attention to their off-road/unimproved-road capabilities. These are adventure bikes. There are dozens and dozens of road bikes. You obviously live in an urban environment so your slant is understandable but does limit your reviews usefulness. Maybe you should consider a ‘Part Two’.

I simply wouldn't take any of them to do any offroading. And getting through a gravel road, they all will manage it regardless of specs, so I wonder what to evaluate. I'm not taking the mid-size adventure bikes for brief rides off the road and all I can actually judge is suspension comfort, steering precision, if I can stand on the foot pegs and whether I can reach the ground. All that can be tested on the road. Maybe - just maybe - also how quickly they bottom out which may be a purely offroad-related thing. But nah, it wouldn't be something that I feel could be reliably judged by anyone as the areas of comparison might not be that clear. Not sure I myself am even expressing it clearly now just writing about it.

Oh dear, after @kohinoore's investigation of the matter, I should only agree and confirm. But at first awkward positions were somehow meant to reflect how good a given bike does. Now, in the comparisons it is irrelevant and well, generally at this point with never videos the position has nothing to do with the videos' content. I'm glad you asked, I may attempt to come up with some new positions for it.

On my 4th GS, 1250 now, i just cant fault them, theyre not slow, get a good rider on one and theres not much that will live with one on a twisty road, yes granted the KTM will have the legs on a straight. I rode my friends SAS and just didnt like if, seat was hard as a plank, bars felt narrow and body position felt slightly hunkered forward, engine vibration and could feel every stone on the road due to the stiffness of the package, you cant leave them in higher gears and try to use the torque as the Vtwin doesnt like that, GS just wafts along in total smoothness and grunt with plenty of comfort thrown in for good measure 🙌💯

Valid points, yet some of them matter in a certain style of riding and preference first of all. But yes, these seem fair and in favor of BMW. Maybe except for the engine vibration that I feel would be more of a BMW's boxer issue.

For months I’ve been back & forth down the 1290 vs 1250 rabbit hole. KTM resale value is bad compared to BMW. I’m looking at a 2020 SAS w/2k miles for $12500, looking at same year GS, same miles for $18k. Best advice to give for shoppers is buy the KTM used, preferably with warranty remaining. Buy a BMW new or used and won’t be much of a difference.

You can't compare 40y of experience with this wannabe adventure bikes from KTM, they have more hp and they are faster on motorway. There is no KTM that will outrun GS on local roads or on off road. Even on motorway GSA will win on 5000km race do his bigger tank. KTM is nice and fast touring bike that is in same category with V strom or Versys but on general GS is proper adventure bike and 1 milion sold units confirm that. In my opinion Africa twin is best bike for off road, GS for road and that KTM is fast on motorway but only untill Multistrada show up and fly next to him. And now when new GS 13 show up with everything new, all this other can take seat and look and learn like they do allways before.

Don’t get me wrong but KTM is known for its off-road motorcycles (enduro, motocross and supermoto) since the late 1990s. The grew-up with dirt bikes. The offroad capabilities of their ADV bikes is definitly superior to their competitors. The 790 ADV profits from their 450 dakar bike. The 1290 is bigger but still very capable. Check out videos from Chris birch. This is hard to compete with a GS or an africa twin (onroad and reliability is rather the strength of the others).

@@viclazo2839 Other than in a straight line, it comes down to the rider. I have ridden both. I am more confident and faster on the GS. It has better COG, handles better and lighter at the controls, and I am more confident hard on the brakes without the dive. BMW has more low end torque…KTM has a better top end and more HP (and more vibration).
