I have this bike too, and eight others... I love this thing! My 2002 Multistrada is amazing, but it's not any more fun than this bike. I am very suprised the thing is so quick. Add a Puig screen and you are good to go. I highly recommend this bike for anyone.

This is an awesome comment! You understand the point that I make continuously, a bike like the multistrada is an awesome bike, and clearly a "better" bike but if you're just looking for fun per dollar, or even just fun overall, you don't have to spend a fortune or buy the best of the best. Fun can be had at any price point. Thanks for sharing!

I have put the 390 through its paces and luckily have never put her down. It is a good bike if you leave the adventure out of it. Unfortunately it has very poor built quality and this comes from someone who loves KTM. I have done thousands of miles on it, and have experienced panels just simply cracking the fairing coming off on dirt tracks and the quick shifter picks up issues. On tarmac it is good , offroad you will get tired of stuff shaking. The enfield is way sturdier for offroad use. I simply came across the video today after another panel cracked going on a normal dirt road and wanted to share my experience. Safe riding everyone. ✌

This is how I review bikes. I'm a fan of a lot of what I review, and I think it's ok if that shows in the review. The reason that a lot of these reviews exist is because great dealers give me access. I absolutely will thank them for their generosity, but neither the dealer or Can Am/BRP pays me for these reviews. It's fine with me if this channel isn't for you, but I just want to clarify for others who watch my videos that these are fully independent reviews where nobody tells me what to say or think about their products. Honestly, if you want to see a different type of review, you should make one. KZbin has plenty of space for every type of review and all the different perspectives.

Nice video. I own this bike, it should be noted that the rear suspension has preload adjustment, and rebound compression adjustment as well… just say’n. Not to be critical, Peter , but this is not low, end, torque engine. If you want to get power out of this thing, it likes to be revved. There is not much power below 5000 RPM. For some this may be a drawback, for roadwork, you can’t tractor it around as much as some other bikes of this displacement. But, Keep it at seven grand to redline, it will go very fast for 370 cc bike. It should be noted , this engine comes from the Duke, which is the street bike, and the engine is tuned more for that application.. I’ve been riding for 57 years , and had many bikes. I just sold my BMW 1200 GS., and my BMW S1000 XR. I bought this to travel with, Mounted it on the front of my truck, camper on the back. This bike is amazing! I’ve camped along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and road sections of it, and some of the side roads…! I couldn’t think of a bike that you could enjoy those kind of roads more! Hope you don’t mind my two. Cents. I’ve put 3000 miles on the thing., so I’ve got a sense of what it is. Thanks for letting me comment! All the best!

I don't think you're being critical at all. I missed the suspension adjustments, so thanks for that. As far as the engine having low end grunt, I completely hear what you're saying, but I still stand by my statement. This is a very small engine, and while it absolutely does create good power for it's size up top, it still creates decent grunt down low for what it is. It doesn't feel like a lot of power in large part because it's a small engine, but if you were to compare this engine to the Kawasaki Versys X 300, you would understand what I'm saying. That bike has almost no grunt down low and relies completely on very high revs to make power. This bike can (gently) tractor it's way out of trouble quite well compared to other similarly small engined competitors.

I have this bike and absolutely love it. I'm having a bit of trouble finding more hardcore off-road rubber cause of the curious tire sizes but its still great. It's the first bike I've ever had that I can do real off road things so I'm learning alot and loving it. Small thing I've never seen mentioned is the break lever sticks out to the side a bit more then I think it should. I've bent mine into a horseshoe shape dumping the bike on its right side in softer ground twice. It seems like KTM will soon be revamping it (maybe for 2025?) with a 21" front tire and a more rally inspired headlight and windscreen and the updated 390 engine that's in the new 390 duke.

@@maxflight777 I'm using the Heidenau K60 scout rear tire and stock front and its working well as a 50/50 setup. My thoughts are more towards taking it on a ktm adventure rally or similar. Pretty sure the Kenda k760 trakmaster or Dunlop D606 should fit

Try Motoz adventure, absolutely fabulous. Upgrade to Motoz Rallyz for serious offroad. Both are still excellent on tarmac, but a bit noisy.

Peter, can you compare this bike to a Honda CRF 300 L (Rally) and the Honda CB500X/NX500 please? I am looking for a lightweight and fun bike to start (easy) off road riding but most of the time will be relaxed on road riding. I like the styling and on/off road capabilities of the 390 Adventure but not the bad dealer network of KTM. Honda is obviously Honda but their mentioned bikes are not that well equipped. The ideal bike would be the "Honda 500 Adventure L" (looks, features, suspension and capabilities of the 390 Adventure but the reliability and engine from Honda).

The rally , I have one, can't do interstate highways and even other highways when there's high winds , especially after to load it down with luggage, also the suspension is garbage, again I have had it for two years and tried everything, just my experience/opinion.

Btw I'm an owner of a Royal Enfield 650 twin but I'm now mighty impressed and considering this as a secondary bike, infact I have already made a deposit for it but I have my eyes on the honda nx500 too which is almost 2x the price of this, let's see what happens

Great little bike to learn on and just ride in general. I was happy to get a deal on my 23' model which makes the purchase even better. Bike just needs a few mods to get it to where you want it and you're set.

@@PeterLoweOne foot pegs, mirrors, bar risers, FuelX Lite, and probably drop a tooth on the front sprocket. I think I'm going to do the sprocket this winter or spring. I want a little more ability at lower revs and I don't care about going super fast. Plus 1 tooth isn't going to dramatically change things. The foot pegs only really need to be changed if they bother you a bunch. Or if you go off road a lot. I don't like the stock mirrors and many others don't like them either so I consider them a necessary change out. Anything else is preference.

What kind of weight can it handle? Rider and gear. No one mentions that. Im a big guy that doesn't travel light lol. But i like a nice light machine for back roads. My current xt250 is awesome until I load it up with camping gear. I love this ktm, and im waiting for the cfmoto 450mt to make it to Canada. Id like to try both b4 i get rid of the yamaha.

I don't know the actual weight capacity, but there are many people who ride this bike with two people, so I would assume it could handle your weight. Remember to adjust the rear preload if you find the bike sagging too much. It's hard to say if a bike is perfect for any type of rider, but I would assume that you'd be happy with this.

I think it's tough for me when you say "tech aside" they're going to give you different riding experiences. So I can absolutely see the type of rider that would appreciate either one of these, and that they could fill the same purpose, but you would have to decide if the lack of tech, or the amount of tech was something that you would appreciate. As an example, I used to own a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4XE. That Jeep had a whole lot of power, and also had the ability to ride short trips on purely electric power, so much of my in town trips were electric only. I traded that in on a Tesla Model Y. Both of these vehicles are COMPLETELY different from each other and while one was extremely capable off-road (and was fun!) The other still serves the same daily purpose for me and has strengths in other areas. So while the average Jeep buyer would never switch from a Wrangler Rubicon to a Tesla, and the average Tesla buyer would never appreciate a Jeep Wrangler, for me, they both fit my life. I think the two bikes that you mention will have some overlap for a lot of people, but you'd have to decide if the differences in features, in feel, in manufacturers intent, give you a benefit or a drawback for your own life.

Out here in Kenya, I think I'm better off with a Dr 650, purely because it's less likely to attract as much attention and Suzuki's support is miles ahead of KTM (here). Either way, let's see what the 2024 Adv looks like, I may pull the trigger on that and keep my eyes on my bike as much as possible. Lol. Cheers

Great question! I thought about this a lot yesterday. I like both of these bikes for what they are and they're similarly priced. I hadn't seen this updated 390 Adventure in person until I was able to film this yesterday. The KLR is a much bigger bike, and I feel like you could strap on more gear to that bike with it's standard rear rack and bigger size, and that gear wouldn't interfere with the rider. There's also a simplicity to the KLR that a lot of people like. When you're out in the middle of nowhere you don't want something to go wrong, and less features means you have less things that can go wrong. Despite having a significantly bigger engine, the KLR doesn't have a much more powerful engine, and it's probably slower overall than the KTM. That may end up being a plus for the KLR in the long run as the KLR's lower compression ratio means that the KLR is just never really working that hard. But I would absolutely choose the KTM 390 Adventure for myself. It's just SO much more motorcycle for a similar price. While the KLR gives you the option to buy it with ABS or without ABS, the KTM gives you ABS with switchable on road or off-road modes. The KTM system is also cornering ABS which means that it can sense lean angle and react accordingly. Combine that with a multi mode traction control which you may think you don't need on a bike with lower power, but on wet or cold pavement, even just as wet or muddy tires first hit the pavement, those features can make a huge difference. Then consider the dash. While the KLR doesn't even have a tachometer, the TFT display of the KTM has literally everything you could ask for and more. It even has the ability to show you turn by turn navigation information right within the main dash, and that's in addition to a dedicated GPS mount right above the TFT display. Add in one of the best features on the KTM, fully adjustable suspension, that can be adjusted tool free without even stopping, and you suddenly have a bike that can go from highway cruising to back trail riding, and be perfectly set up for both. Throw in that the KTM has 6 gears instead of 5, an available quickshifter, adjustable clutch and brake levers, it's just hard to not feel like the KTM gives you a lot more value. The KLR does give you a larger wheel set, and it may be more capable in some off-road scenarios because of that, but at the end of the day, taking all of the KTM's features away, I'd still feel more comfortable (with my skillset) on the KTM because of it's lower weight and overall nimble feel. So for me, it's the KTM 390 Adventure all day long. I had forgotten how feature packed it was, but when you combine the features with the ease of riding, I think it's the bike that I would be happier riding in all riding conditions, not just in adventure riding, and for me, it's also the winner for adventure riding.

I love the Versys 650. I owned one for years. One thing to consider is that your KTM is an adventure bike while the Versys 650 is a sport touring bike. If you want to have something similar to the Versys but while maintaining your off road ability, you would probably want to consider the Suzuki V-Strom. I bought the Versys 650 because I found it to be much more fun on the road than a V-Strom, but it is an on-road only bike.

They may be tubeless tyres with a tube fitted though.

@robinonroadbecause tyres have tubeless written on them because the TYRE can be used on tubeless rims. The ktm390 adv has only ever come withe tube spoked rims. So your bike will have tubes even though the tyres say tubeless.

I love it, but it appears KTM may have designed the front based on the movie 'Aliens'. I stopped looking for the perfect dual-sport bike, so bought a KLX300, and a BMW F800GS. This 390 @348 lbs probably is almost as close as it gets..
