@briansture43532 жыл бұрын
The screen is there to stop windchill and slow air approaching on the rider. This creates a partial vacuum behind the screen with higher pressure at the front. These two differential pressures increase with riding speed. When the two differential pressures mix they often don't mix smoothly. The way to reduce this effect is to feed a volume of air at a slower speed behind the screen reducing low pressure. Some bikes have quite a gap between the bottom of the screen and the fairing to allow airflow up and under the screen to reduce this effect producing smoother air mixing between high and low-pressure air. Subsequently reducing buffeting. Acceptance of some moving air behind the screen is inevitable unless you have a massive screen and ride in a partial vacuum. This will often increase wind pressure on your back as the air at the rear tries to close the partial vacuum producing rear buffeting. Tip. If you have one of these add-on top-of-the-screen deflectors. Place the deflector edge onto your eye vision You may be surprised at the result. If this works for you. Make a coffee sit down and work out why it works.

Some people have suggested drilling holes in the bottom of the windscreen to allow some air to flow through to the back of it. Have you tried that? I'm trying to fix some buffeting on an 06 Vstrom and I was going to try that next.

I’m 5’10” and ride mostly street with my 790 (non -R) and am finally fairly happy with the Madstad setup AND an MRA Xscreen installed on the 20” screen. I have the MRA a little lower than specified in instructions (drilled the screen) and ride slower speeds with the MRA positioned way down and higher speeds with it raised. I get best results with the Madstad tilt in the middle position and almost as low as it will go in the brackets. I think the small frontal area of the bike contributes to buffeting and given the shape of the Madstad screen, lower seems to be better.

I'm currently deciding on my next bike, either a Teneré 700 or a KTM Adventure 890R. I know they both have buffeting issues. I got an MRA X-Creen Sport Add-On Variable Windscreen Spoiler Blade for my last two bikes, a VStrom 1000 and a 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900. It fixed the buffeting issues on both bikes. The MRA spoiler (made in Germany) is well built and won't let go. And you have the option of clamping or bolting it on. Zero regrets. 👍

Another helpful vid. I'm OK with the shield in the low position, the air is fairly clean but could still be improved. As you said though, the high position is bad. You'd have to be either really tall or short to run it there. It sounds like the MRA Xcreen is the ticket due to higher quality. I'm also going to pick up a Puig for fall cool weather commuting. Another reported (but expensive) help is to run CRG bar end mirrors to eliminate the vortex coming off the stock mirrors.
@Simon-pu9qg4 жыл бұрын
I bought the same screen and the lower cam-lock broke after 15 minutes on the highway. Luckily I was able to fix (and improve) it with some carriage bolts and wing nuts. Would still recommend buying something better quality. I find my screen works best for me fully extended (legs pointing up) and tilted almost vertical. It looks a bit weird but now I can open my visor at highway speeds no problem and hear my bike too!
@jeffanderson62084 жыл бұрын
Most of the buffeting is generated by the stock mirrors test this for yourself by taking your mirrors off and ride it down the road. you'll feel clean air. then go on rottweiler or another site and by decent mirrors for this bike and you will love it.

I think everything you said in the video is true. I've owned a 2011 V-strom and now have a 2019. The windscreen situation is worse on the 2019. I've tried four aftermarket windshields and any combination of those with two different e-bay spoilers like the one in your video. I think a very low screen with the spoiler adjusted for the individual rider is the best bet for most people. I'll probably swap to my most massive see-through alternative for late season riding, 99% on road. I live in Norway so it gets kinda cold in autumn.

I had a similar problem with a 1500 goldwing. Plus the fairing is so big that the only air you get is heat off the engine. I bought a BMW R1100RT , sold the goldwing, and I never looked back. The buffeting was so bad on the goldwing that you couldn't ride it on the freeway above 50 mph. If I had kept it I would have cut that barn door wind screen in half, and used the Plexiglas to make some winglets to deflect air on the riders. The vacuum pocket behind that mess was so strong that it would blow a wind on your back .

@@ExploringCabinsandMines All that I can do is relate MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. Different year models may have different fairing, windshield, etc combinations that give a different ride experience, or I may have had worn bearings contributing to the problems.... I'm 6'1", I have a 2022 Yamaha Tracer 9, the windshield is awful, lots of buffeting on my head, feels like someone's playing my helmet like a bongo. If I tuck in behind it, it's totally silent, but I can't ride like that. I tried the same solution you did, but the buffeting only got worse, no matter how I adjusted it. I tried rubber spacers under the screen, to lift it about an inch further forward, assuming more wind could get in underneath to even the pressure...noticeable difference, but still some buffeting. I tried the Givi touring screen, it's 2 inches taller...still, lots of buffeting, even worse than stock. I then bought a small no-name $40 windscreen online...it blocks the wind from my body, some buffeting, but it's on my upper chest, my head is in clean air. Not happy, but it'll do. Great bike, but shameful that the windscreen is so bad for taller riders. For comparison, I had a Tiger 850...some wind noise, but no buffeting, totally comfortable.

I'm running with the stock windshield mounted in the upper position and an after marked wind deflector, my deflector has an alluminium clamp and is made pretty well, i found it for 25 +- dollars on aliexpress, if you dont mind the wait (it takes 2/3 months of shipping to me in italy migth be better for you).

On my 790R I removed the adaptors on the stock mirrors resulting in them sitting lower and it actually helped a little, almost as much as no mirrors at all. The taller standard 790 screen helped nothing except getting less wind in my chest/body area (haven't tried this screen with lower mirror position though). In highest screen position its even worse than the R model. Its not that often I'm riding +100km/h for long inactive periods - trying to keep it on the fun backroads as much as possible. But for long distance adventures it might be neccessary to take the highways/faster route sometimes - to have time to enjoy the camps and destination goals... so looking at one of those spoiler things now hoping it will help! Too bad they are kind of big and ugly... I've seen one using a really small spoiler clipon once(and he said it helped), but cant find it for sale anywhere :\ Will try removing the winglets below the headlight also I think, as somebody here mentioned. But I doubt it will help as if I put my legs up on the fairing with feet next to the headlight, completely blocking this channel of air, it is not changing the buffeting much. But if I angle the feet outwards in front of the handlebars it changes quite a bit. Meaning it is the handlebar stuff thats making the most turbulence for me? Try without the handguards also maybe? (not that I would want to ride without them but...) Or just hope one of those standard spoiler will create that air bubble that stabilizes the airflow around the head and live with the ugliness... Or get a 3D printer and make my own deflectors in suitable places. Yay another excuse for getting yet another expensive toy ;)

I respectfully disagree with your comment about no worse than V Strom or Africa Twin. I have owned both and still have the V Strom. I sold the Africa Twin in order to buy the 790. I love everything about the bike except for the terrible job it does in the air management department. It is causing me hearing problems even though I always wear proper fitting earplugs. I have experimented with different windscreens, including the very large Givi model, with very little success. I've tried no windscreen, removing the lower spoilers, etc., but to no avail. I benchmarked it against my V Strom on the same stretch of highway back to back in exactly the same conditions and the 790 was much worse. After much experimentation, which included hi-tech materials such as duct tape and hardboard, I came to the conclusion that the buffeting is caused by updraughts caused by the shape of the bodywork. The air shoots up from below, in the fork area, and also off the angled surface of the bodywork. Some of the air is directed at the base of the helmet, and some hits the underside of your arms causing all kinds of airflow problems and buffeting. To properly address the problem, I believe KTM will have to change the shape of the bodywork or more likely someone in the aftermarket will design a set of bolt-on panels to properly manage airflow. If this happens, I'll be near the front of the line to purchase it. Otherwise, the 790 is by far the best all-rounder I've ever owned.
