Before I get inundated with corrections I realise a couple of slips of the tongue in the video, after it had rendered and uploaded. Firstly i referred to six bolts in the bracket instead of four. Secondly when fitting the screen I called the fixings castle nuts, when they are quite obviously Well nuts. I blame it on my cold. ;)

I just wanted to report back on my 790 ADV windshields to date. So far, to try and eliminate the buffeting that ranged from an annoying buzz to making me feel like a bobble head doll, I’ve tried: Madstad, Givi Touring, Givi Airflow, MRA Touring, as well as the stock tall screen, and the short one off my 390 ADV. Some were better than others, the Madstad and the MRA Touring were the best, but the solution to the buffeting was to remove the two “winglets” under the headlight nacelle. Problem solved ! (I have to admit I read of someone else doing this, so I gave it a try.) While at speeds above 60mph I placed my hand above the gap between the forks and the tank with the “winglets” in place and could feel the buffeting coming up “behind” the windshield and dash !!! I’ve stayed with the MRA Touring screen as it seems to give the smoothes air flow and is not as heavy as the Madstad. Hope this helps anyone else who has been fighting this problem😉👍

I can certainly agree that the original screen on my 790 Adventure created a a lot of buffeting at highway speeds and danced around like it was possessed 🤪. Presently I’m trying out one of the Madstad Engineering adjustable screens. The fact that it’s adjustable for height and tilt seems to give me options for more air in the summer, and more protection in the winter.....but time will tell 😉👍🏍.

In the States I have to travel many hundreds of miles, much of which can be on dual carriageways, just to get where the “fun” riding really starts. It often requires long runs of speeds of 75-80 mph just to not get run over in traffic. I have yet to get a 790 and the wind protection has been the reason I’ve held off. Your review is encouraging. Seems like the 790/MRA combo might be a winner.

Thanks for the review. Subscribed. Based on this I ordered the MRA touring screen for my 790S. It looks great on the bike, better than the skinny stock screen IMO, and better than some of the other options, such as Puig and Givi and is rock solid with quality fittings. The Puig screen has received some positive reviews on KZbin, although it uses the stock fitting, which was a concern, but in the end I couldn’t find one in stock at the gear stores I use in the US, so this was a nice pointer to another option. The MRA touring screen is surprisingly not any taller than the stock S screen in its high position. I found it improved wind noise at cruising speed below 50. Above that speed it’s a marginal improvement. Buffeting is still an issue on windy days at highway speeds in traffic, and that’s not going away on this bike. I tried a cheap clip-on visor with a a single central mounting and agree it felt too unstable on the stock screen. i will try it with this more solid mounted screen, and if it improves things will order a nicer MRA visor for highway cruising. BTW I am 5’10”, 32” inseam.

Thanks. your measurements match mine. I still get wind noise from this, but not the buffeting that the stock screen gave. I appreciate going with the short screen is a compromise, but I'm not a fan of tall screens. I'm going to order an MRA VSA spoiler to clip on for when i'm doing extended motorway runs, and maybe for a bit more protection in the winter?

I got an MRA X-Creen Sport Add-On Variable Windscreen Spoiler for my last two bikes. They're made in Germany, adjustable, and can be both clamped and bolted on. Fixed my buffeting issues on both bikes. And no need to buy a new windscreen. No regrets. 👍

Nice review Tony. I think peaked helmets and adventure bikes often have this issue. I fitted the x creen sport deflector to my 850gs and with my arai x4 can now ride at 50mph with the visor up with no issues and it has made a massive difference when touring. I didn't drill it on so it's easily removed if needed. I agree it also looks neater than the givi one 👍🇬🇧

Thanks for the video, Tony. It makes me wonder why manufacturers don't do a bit more homework on the standard screens they supply with their bikes. I've yet to see a bike review where the reviewer is happy with the standard screen on any bike. People like MRA almost invariably come up with a better after market solution, so why not do the research and fit a better shaped screen as standard? Surely a slightly wider/taller/better shaped/more secure screen at the point of manufacture won't make the bike that much more expensive.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
Yep its a good point, its rare that I've got one with a stock screen. The Tiger 800 wasn't too bad and the new 900 is pretty good. Theres always going to be some wind noise, but its the buffeting that can be a real problem when riding distances. I wonder if manufacturers do much wind tunnel modelling? Mind you I guess they need to find a solution that works with the majority of riders

I sold my 790 adventure...one of the main reasons was the buffeting from the screen. Tried all the aftermarket screens available at the time and nothing improved it...MRA didn’t have a screen at the time...used a MRA screen with a Gs and that sorted the buffeting on that👍

I don’t understand how that helps? I had to sell my 890 Adventurer R 1 month old, because the buffeting was unbearable at higher speeds on my peaked lid. It gave me a splitting headache. Today I test rode a standard 890 which has a taller standard screen, hoping it would be better being taller and it was just as awful. The only solution is to go lower than the standard R screen, so the one in this test is in between the height of the R and S 890 and both of those are awful so how can this screen not be awful if it’s neither taller than the S screen nor shorter than the R?
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not so simple as just the height of the screen, the shape a width make a big difference. I’ve tested it for many miles and it was better than either of the stock screens….for me….in the helmet I normally wear. Helmet choice makes a big difference too. I’ve currently got the r screen on and with the peaked Shoei Hornet there’s quite a bit of wind noise, but with the peaked Airoh Commander it’s very quiet.

Why would you get a shorter screen if you’re getting buffeting from the higher stock screen?

The height of the screen is not always directly related to the amount of buffeting. This screen is shorter, but its wider and its shape deflects the air more effectively for me.

Wondering if the hand guards and mirror stalks clear the side of the screen at full steering lock. I put on a Puig touring, the hand guards cleared but the mirror stalks had to be rotated back a couple of inches to clear. i guess is not useful for the R model because of OEM mirrors. With the S windshield the mirrors touch it and with this being wider, then you will not be able to fully turn the handlebar. Also on MRA website it says this windscreens are not compatible with handlebar risers, another huge mistake. Im seriuosly looking forward to some company making a useful windscreen for the R model without it being the size of the puig, it is just way out of proportion
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 3 жыл бұрын
Not tried it in the R model obviously, but the cut outs on the side mean the mirrors don’t touch the screen on full lock. Obviously bar risers would thrown this out which is why MRA warn against it.

Nice video! Informative and enjoyable to watch I've been suffering the buffeting with the standard screen as well and went looking on the MRA website to get this screen following your review.
