I got back recently from 7 weeks in KL after 5 years of no travel from the pandemic. I canceled my Northern Thailand portion of my trip (Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai due to their massive flooding) and then cancelled a later trip to Cambodia (PP and Siem Reap) because I was exhausted by that point. I was actually relieved to stay in KL because even with its shortcomings (hygiene, inefficiencies, to "did you think this all the way through?") it was nice to rest and recover. I shopped for items I couldn't get in the US because it was unavailable or too expensive. I stayed away from fried foods, and most sugary drinks. I could only manage at most 5 or 6 weeks in SE Asia even though there is a three months visa free travel for US citizens. It made me more appreciative of home rather than trying to see it as a substitute home. Vacation spot, absolutely.

Thank you for watching and sharing your experience! I’ve been living in Southeast Asia for two years now and have adjusted to the weather, so it’s a viable option for me. That said, I’m still exploring the world and going with the flow-who knows where I’ll end up! I completely understand the need to rest and recover during your travels, and I’m sorry you had to cancel part of your trip. KL is a great place to recharge, and it sounds like you had a chance to really get a feel for the city. Experience is the best teacher, and it’s great you figured out what works best for you.

I'm a realtor in California and as inconvenient as this maybe for short turn visitors, this makes sense when you say you are "moving" somewhere. Especially to another country for a cheaper lifestyle. They have their own lives to finance. It is very hard to constantly have different people moving in and out of your apartment in under a year. They just want you to go for it. If you say you are moving somewhere for a new experience you should be willing to at least stay a year. If you cannot commit to 6 months to a year, you should stay at home stays where you were living with a family.
@QueenofDC
@QueenofDC 6 күн бұрын
Rental markets vary across regions, and this perspective doesn’t apply universally. Just because someone is moving to experience a different culture or lower cost of living doesn’t mean they’re obligated to commit to a year-long lease. Short-term rentals, co-living spaces, and flexible housing options exist precisely because not everyone operates within the same framework. The terms are the terms, and if those terms don’t work, so be it-no one has to settle for something they don’t want, nor are they required to stay in home stays. I’ve learned that I can obtain whatever I desire with patience and time. A cheaper lifestyle isn’t the issue here, especially since you don’t know the lease agreement amount. What a landlord wants isn’t my primary concern; if it’s negotiable, we’ll work it out. This is just one market, and the entire world doesn’t operate this way. There are countless options and housing models globally that cater to different lifestyles. There’s no need to settle, or stay at a home stay. No one dictates my choices or where I stay.

I lived in KL for about 9 months. Something they won't tell you is that after you obtain three visas in a row you may not be allowed a fourth. They say the visas are for tourists and if they think you are a long term visitor they want you to use MM2H, (My Malaysia Second Home). There have been expats refused entry after three consecutive visa runs - BEWARE!

GURL! The same thing happened to me in Bangkok with 2 Airbnbs back to back - ROACHES! I told a couple of people and they were like "Well, it's Bangkok." NOOOOOOOO! I REFUSE to live with roaches. I was supposed to be there for 30 days but I left after 9 days and came back to Kuala Lumpur. Thank goodness I haven't had roaches here in KLCC, however, it does cost SO MUCH MORE on Airbnb and getting a year lease is a lot. So I feel you 100%, sis!!! And I hope you find your ideal place SOON!

When I opened the door to the house, I knew I had made a mistake. That evening I went to bed and yep felt something crawling on me. Turned the blanket bank and there were 3 bugs crawling on me and the sheets. I ended up going to a hotel at 2am ! Fortunately, I had enough presence of mind to grab my phone and video it. I have lived and worked as an expat in Kuala Lumpur amongst other countries . Am currently in Hong Kong. I was in KL from 2015 to 2021. I have never heard of anyone else ( colleagues and friends) having such bad experiences as you. Did you book very low budget Air bnb places? I had friends from Australia and UK who booked Air bnb during those times and were always happy with what they got. There is a range so if you book really cheap places perhaps those problems occur. Frankly, I have had worse experiences with cleanliness in the US and Australia. As for rental , had no problems with that too. Thw key is to get a good agent. As for requirements, 2 months deposit, utilituy deposit, rent up front are all pretty standard.
@QueenofDC
@QueenofDC 11 күн бұрын
Excuse me, I didn’t “book very low budget” Airbnbs-nice assumption, though. Just because you haven’t heard of anyone else having bad experiences doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Maybe you need a more diverse circle because I’ve come across people with similar stories. Let’s not compare apples to oranges-perhaps your friends’ expectations aren’t at the same level as mine. My issue isn’t with the standard requests-it’s with the unnecessary complications and inefficiencies in the process. Let’s not act like your experiences define everyone’s reality. Navigating the systems here can be convoluted, even with a “good agent.” You’d better have your own attorney on hand to ensure you’re getting a fair deal. Also, in KL, you can book “expensive” or “cheap” Airbnbs and still encounter the same issues. You haven’t been here since 2021, and it shows in your out-of-touch comments.

@@QueenofDC What I also know is folks who go to other countries for work are protected by built in friendsr and ready resources and folks available to help them with the transition. They ain't out there navigating it all by themselves. In addition, sometimes the companies have western standard apartments for these incoming employees.In addition, oftentimes the company pays the rent too!!!. These folks don't have a clue about travel and navigating it solo. To be honest, some of these folks were still living at home, then went to another cocoon...a job. Sorry, but this guys attitude pissed me off.

I havent been here since 2021? 😂I visit KL on work at least 3 times a year though I am now based in Hong Kong. I have ex colleagues still working there and expat friends still living there. I am very much in touch. I have never heard of anyone needing their own attorney to rent in Malaysia😂. Attorneys are only needed when buying or selling property. As for expectations, I usually stay in Service apartments like Frasers or Somerset when I travel to KL or around the region. Sometimes we book an Air bnb and expect a similar standard but without the frills like daily housekeeping. Generally you get what you pay for. You cant compare KL with a smaller city in Vietnam. But KL is still relatively cheap. For 300.Ringgit per night you can get pretty decent accomodation. You sound pretty entitled. I can predict you arent going to be happy in Malaysia but if you go to Singapore you or Hong Kong you will find landlords are picky about tenants and wont rent to some even if they are willing to pay and of course we are talking about a whole different price range.

☔Hello from CA. I have been struggling with housing for the past 35 years ever since I moved to the Bay Area. When I lived in Asia, I found knowing owners at small stores helped me the most to find housing. Warm weather is the ideal condition for bugs. Lived in Hawaii & Indonesia with insects always there. Loved your Mexico City hotel with all the art, Viva la Mexico! The more connections you make, the easier it will be to find housing! Do u feel comfortable contacting the American expats in KL? When I lived in Tokyo, I had to go out to the public bath. Adapt, my dear girl!

Thank you for sharing your interesting journey and for watching! I had an amazing time in Mexico City and loved Hostal Juárez. While I have both local and American friends here, it’s still a work in progress and system you can't escape. Connections definitely make things easier, but sometimes, as part of the process, you have to roll up your sleeves and figure things out along the way-that’s all part of the adventure. It can be frustrating at times, but that’s the cost of living in a new place. Everything will fall into place when it’s the right fit, and I’ll come out of it much wiser. I’m grateful to have the flexibility to take my time-this isn’t permanent, and I can always move on to better options. I had a purpose, and this is part of the journey to figure it out. Along the way, I’ve met some cool people. Adaptation is something you’ll hear me talk about often-it’s just part of this life. And public baths are freeing 🙌🏽.

I appreciate your experiences. Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of them. I plan to visit Malaysia around the middle of February thur middle of March. I personally don’t care for the corporation AirB&B, because they go around the world buying properties making them unaffordable for visitors, with their fees etc. They’ve ruined Portugal that has a high vacancy rate due AirB&Bs buying up properties, causing property values to artificially increase; affecting even native Portuguese who can no longer live well in their own country. As a future expat, Portugal is off my list. I refuse to rent AirB&Bs. Their investors only care about profits, they don’t care how their greed decimates economies. Rentals have increased in many European countries because of AirB&Bs. Thank you for sharing. You and all you do is greatly appreciated. 😘 Hugs

I live in kl since 2011 (except during COVID when i returned to France) and never had any issues renting out; always pretty easy, they are lot of choices. It's always one year lease at least and 2/3 months deposit. Recently i move out from my lease of four seasons residence klcc to an airbnb in the center of kl which i pay monthly; no signed contract, no deposit, no lease of 1 year, no electricity bill, no internet bill, however the rental is higher but i am ok with that. It's a choice. I found renting in Malaysia much easier than France for instance, in France agents /owners can ask your salary slips, your tax income, guarantor etc 😢😢😢.. Good luck in kl

As an owner of rentals I'm not about to rent to anyone for less than a year. you definitely will sign a lease. Plus you're going to pay two months in advance and pay a one month security deposit. You will get a rent increase after one year. You will be charged for damage to plumbing and charged for maintenance when you call about clog toilets or sinks.

That’s fine, and it’s your right to structure things however you see fit-it’s also my choice not to rent from you. I don’t have an issue with signing a lease as long as the terms are reasonable and agreed upon. The real issue here is people resorting to games or dishonest tactics to serve their own interests. @@QueenofDC that’s so true Queen. My parents because millionaires renting properties. We had to clean those houses and apartments, it was horrible how people choose to live in filth! That’s why I don’t want to be a rental property owner to this day. Property owners are fearful of acquiring bad tenants and they need to pay their mortgages. Therefore, a year’s lease, rent in advance, and outrageous deposits ensue. All my parent’s properties were pristine until they were rented. There is a lot of speculation in housing, not in flipping homes, but buying up units to Airbnb for income. You get many second or third rate type buildings where most are Airbnb rentals. It is like a chop shop with dozens if not more private owners who think they are wannabe hoteliers or property tycoons when they are not. Personally I never stayed in an Airbnb because of varying standards (or lack thereof.) I like newer boutique hotels in the center of town or close to public transportation (KL Sentral) so I am not dependent on Grab or have to walk on broken or missing sidewalks.

Your options might be limited because though realtors might not tell you this, some landlords in Asia are picky about ethnic origin of tenants. Realtors will not show you units of such owners. Whether in Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia etc this happens. Look up the video Africans decry tenancy ban Malaysia on KZbin. I am just informing you of this if you don’t already know. This doesn’t apply to Air bnb I am guessing but rather rentals directly from owners through realtors.

Not from personal experience but what I have heard as a Malaysian from my expat friends and also realtors as I am a landlord myself though not in KL.The Chinese owners you refer to might be local. There is a big local Chinese population in Malaysia who are fourth, even fifth generation. But there are also what is called PRC Chinese( from the Mainland) investors and Singaporean Chinese investors who run Air bnb businesses in KL. Possibly you could have viewed apartments from all of these groups . Booking a place for over a month sounds like a good move to give yourself some stability and breathing room. I always say that about travel Facebook group recommendations-those are vacation budgets, going back home to recoup my money suggestions 😩😂. When you’re staying longer or living in a place, you have to factor in so much so we can't do $100 per night. Constantly making decisions can be draining, which is why I often tell people, Don’t ask me for recommendations or things to do-you pick; I’m tired. Don't cry for me, Argentina, or don't cry for me, Malaysia! I'm in Airbnb Hell in France. The French even need help finding housing. You need a long Dossier in France, and they offer a one-year lease furnished and a three-year lease unfurnished. The French don't care how much money you have in the bank. They only want to know if you have a French job and apartment insurance. Also, European apartments have only a washer or a combo washer and dryer, which is a dryer that really leaves your clothes damp. Other countries are old-school and use clothes lines to dry clothes.

You wrote that like I don’t understand the basics. I know there are challenges, and I’m fully aware this isn’t Singapore or other big cities-which I’ve lived in and never had have to go through this rigmarole. Of course, you pay more for shorter terms, but that’s not my issue. I’m talking about KL, where I’m learning their system and process for how they do things, and that’s where my frustration lies. It’s not just the price-it’s also about navigating the systems and standards that can make it unnecessarily complicated. And we’re not talking about a penthouse in Manhattan-their units aren’t even at that caliber for the complexity they present.

Hi Queen. In many places in Asia, if they don't have the combo was her-dryer, they'll have a washer only (with spin dryer inside). They'll dry their clothes on the balcony (drying rack) or outdoors in the sun. In some countries, electricity is expensive so they'd rather save on electricity by air drying. Re: lease, are you allowed to lease for, let's say 6 months, if your visa for Malaysia is only 3 months? I've heard that you can get an extension for another 3 months, then some immigration officers will frown if you get a 2nd extension (making your total stay 9 months). Malaysia wants foreigners staying long term to get the digital nomad visa or the MM2H visa, both of which have financial requirements. Btw, have you tried Penang or Cameron/ Genting Highlands? Safe travels.
@QueenofDC
@QueenofDC 12 күн бұрын
@@kitty_s23456 Thank you for sharing your insights and guidance! I understand about the washing machines, but in Malaysia, the places I stay typically have a washer and dryer. Since I don’t always have a balcony, having a dryer is essential for my longer stays. In Thailand, I’m fine hanging my clothes on a rack or balcony, but in KL, I prioritize places with dryers. If I’m on a lease, I’m paying for electricity anyway, so it works for me. As for leases, visa discussions aside, the key factor is money. They’re not offering six-month leases-you’re looking at a year minimum, though some might negotiate down to nine months. Every realtor or owner is different, and securing a lease for less than a year can be challenging. It’s not a straightforward process, but if you have the money to invest, it’s manageable. Money allows you to lease. And yes, I absolutely enjoyed my time in Penang-it was wonderful! 🥰 Thank you for tuning in and for your support-I truly appreciate it!

@QueenofDC Hi Queen, I'm glad that you enjoyed Penang. Have you tried Cambodia? Siem Reap (tourist town), Phnom Penh (city) & Kampot (beach) are the main tourist & expat zones. In SR, I've seen from vids that some landlords accept 6 months lease. Some even accept 3 months! (vlogger "Nan with a backpack" was able to get a 3-month lease). However, you said you're a city girl so PP might work better for you. Rents are higher in PP, though. I've been to SR & PP on vacays. I liked SR more - but then I'm not a big city person. I suggest you try visiting both, and Kampot too! The channels of "For Real" and "Itchy Feet" give good info abt Cambodia. Once inside Cambodia, one can get a "business"/ retirement visa for 3, 6 or 12 months - just use an agency. Cheers & safe travels.

@QueenofDC I understand. Cambodia is not for everyone. if you're still in Malaysia by April or May (hot months), I recommend Genting or Cameron Highlands because they're cooler/ high elevation. Have you been to the Philippines? If not yet, then I'd recommend Baguio city (for April or May) because it's also cooler/ high elevation. It's also near to the town of San Juan, La Union province = it's a beach town (good for a few days getaway = you might get bored if long term since you're a city girl). If in Manila, I recommend the area of BGC (but only for a few days or 1 week then move to another place). BGC is modern but pricier than other areas. Other tourist/ expat places are the cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Iloilo and Roxas. Cebu & Dumaguete cities have lots of older expats (men). Good luck. Happy researching & safe travels! 🌻

Marriott’s apartment leases sound like a great option for short-term stays, especially for peace of mind. However, I think it’s a great option for newcomers or those with a different mission or timeline. I really appreciate you sharing these suggestions-they’ll definitely help others! For me, my rule of thumb is simple: when something becomes too complicated, it’s not for me, and I’m perfectly fine with that. I’m not in a rush or desperate either. I set out to explore the housing market here and gained valuable insight into how it works. There are decent realtors around, and I’ve met a few, but one key takeaway is that they don’t work for you-you’ll need to have your own attorney ready to review all contracts before signing. I can take it or leave it. There are so many other options waiting for me! ☺️

For me, it’s the system here that stands out. After dealing with a few less-than-ideal agents, you can eventually find a decent one-but it’s important to remember that agents work for the owner. Even if you’re referred to someone, you’ll still have to navigate the process, and every owner operates differently. The best advice I can give is to build your own “dream team,” with a lawyer being the most crucial member, as not everyone operates with integrity. It’s been a valuable learning experience, and I’m sharing these lessons to help others understand that securing housing here often comes with more challenges than you might expect.
