Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely travel light-I stick to one carry-on and a backpack. If I buy something, it’s always to replace an existing item. I don’t shop much for clothes, and everything I own fits perfectly in my bag so I leave nothing behind. To see my luggage, click on the Community tab on my channel and scroll down to see a photo where I shared how I downsized my luggage. Great that you’ve traveled through SE Asia and are now exploring South America! Traveling light definitely makes it easier to move around and adapt to different places. Running your small business while traveling sounds like such a fulfilling way to live.

I grew up outside the States and like you said, i almost always feel more relaxed and enjoy life whenever I am in countries outside of the US... If only I could convince my other half. It's not too big a city that the rat race consumes me. It also checks all the boxes for me. I tell everyone to find there happy place in life.

@@ninimusta336 On the SSI part I can apply in January but I still have my US Bank account but that shouldn't be a problem. I know of people who live here on SSI and also Ex Military Expats who have been here for over 20 years pulling Military Pensions so that shouldn't be a issue. I have a Thai Bank Account so in about a month I will be navigating that part of my retirement. What I have learned about being in Thailand that there are always options. LOL.

Being a caregiver is not always easy but depending on how you choose to look at it, it can be a privilege. Good luck, I hope you will get a chance finally to live a life of your choosing.

Sage advice. I'm a US expat living in Ecuador as we speak. I've studied those who thrive in expat life and those who return. No shame either way, but with better information, better mindset, and learning from the mistakes of others, you're much more likely to live well as an expat. The best and worst part of expat life are other expats. Yikes. Crazy, toxic people are no fun. And there are gems. All part of the journey.

Retiring comfortably in the US these days is almost impossible. I'm planning to retire at 61 in another country outside the US that is free, safe and very cheap with a high quality of life and good healthcare. Here in the US more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. You’re absolutely right-it feels like the traditional idea of retirement is slipping away for many people in the U.S. I actually had this discussion with friends yesterday, and we all agreed that the days when pensions provided security and people could comfortably retire in their hometowns are largely behind us. The rising cost of living, stagnant wages, and a lack of affordable housing have made it increasingly difficult to save enough for retirement. For those living in high-cost areas like Washington, D.C., retiring there is out of reach without significant financial resources. I respect your decision to plan for retirement abroad, especially since I’ve made a similar choice and know firsthand how rewarding it can be. Many countries offer affordable living, excellent healthcare, and a slower pace of life-things that seem harder to come by in the U.S. for retirees. It’s a practical and empowering way to take control of your future and redefine what retirement looks like. As you pointed out, the situation for middle-class Americans is concerning. Even for those who’ve worked hard their entire lives, homeownership and savings are becoming less attainable, which limits options for a secure retirement. It’s a sobering reminder of how crucial it is to think ahead and explore alternatives while we still have the energy and resources to do so. Hopefully, conversations like these can inspire more people to rethink their approach and take action sooner rather than later.

I've lived overseas, by choice & fortune, nearly half of my Naval career. Bought my retirement "home" in Europe two years ago. I'm thankful to have visited most of the Asian cities you mentioned except for Malaysia. Besides Japan, SE Asia, Europe, the Gulf, and Australia I've felt safe in the skin I'm in. I went to Kuala Lumpur, then went to Bali and came back again. I love Kuala Lumpur. Very beautiful and cheap . Nice luxurious cheap apartments. Good foods. Nice shopping centers. I need to go back to Malaysia, this time I will go to other cities also besides Kuala Lumpur

KL has my heart ❤️. When people say it’s cheap, I have to laugh because, after living in Vietnam, I now pay 50% more for everything in KL-so I can’t call it cheap anymore 😂🤣. Vietnam spoiled me in so many ways, but it just can’t compete with the luxuries KL offers-it’s definitely a trade-off. When I first came to KL, it wasn’t as expensive as it is now, but compared to U.S. standards, it’s still very affordable. All that said, KL is my love!

I just came back from a trip. Singapore 3 days. All of Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur,Melaka,the Highlands, Penang). Our tour guide was from Penang and took us to all the good food and insider spots. Everyone Everywhere was celebrating Deepavali. So amazing!

I am an Expat, 27 years in Japan. I really enjoyed your video and how cool it is that you can go wherever you want and live for however long you want to and move on if you wish. That’s really remarkable. I have traveled a lot in Asia since I am based in Japan, and loved most everywhere. But you are right, living somewhere and visiting are completely different. Even the USA! When I go home for vacation, it’s very different from living there… Vacation mode and everyday life mode are completely different. Vacation mode is every day, fun, fun, fun! As opposed to the real life responsibilities of living in that same place. I’ve hit retirement age and now I’m considering on retiring in central America. OMG, your vlog showed up in my feed…I’ve finally found “my people”…Another former DMV resident with a like mindset! ❤ Living in Paris is one of my dreams as well, however the paperwork and the cost are a bit off putting unfortunately. I grew up in a military family so moving around is not stressful for me, full time travel is a goal of mine. This video was full of wonderful tips for retiring abroad, a couple of which are different from other videos I’ve seen. But one of the things that no one expands on is how they manage things back home. I’m retired with basically no family to depend on. Most issues I handle online. However, no permanent address abroad, at least not in the near future, how does one deal with the minutia that requires paperwork or personal attention in the United States? Or have you completely disconnected? I too always try to stay at least a month in a country and rent in an area near but not in the touristy area for convenience. My first non-job related trip to Asia is scheduled for May 2025. I plan to stay in South Korea but may do a couple of short side trips to other countries. Just working towards my goal of traveling full time in 2026 😊 Looking forward to seeing your adventures!

For managing mail or important documents, I highly recommend a virtual mailbox. They can scan your mail and even forward physical documents to you for a fee-very convenient for nomads. I use a virtual mailbox. I’m not completely disconnected from the U.S., as my mom still receives some of my mail, but I’ve set everything up electronically to get digital copies of important documents. Staying organized online has truly been a game-changer, and many nomads rely on similar systems. How exciting that you’re heading to South Korea in May 2025-it’ll be here before you know it! South Korea is also on my list, but I’m waiting for warmer weather and a bit more calm there. I know you’ll have an amazing time exploring and preparing for your full-time travel journey in 2026! Feel like I just spent time with a good friend, watching you. I am currently in Scotland in the flat I bought to spend time in when I retire. I’m 7 years from retirement, but why not enjoy it now?! Our plan is definitely to split time and move around. We’ve had a home base in Spain that we went to every summer for 9 years. Now Scotland. Next? Don’t know. Hello from CA. Great videos showcasing life outside of the US 4 women. Safety is so different. Japan would blow your mind. Once taught English in Japan & was amazed at night, one could venture out at midnight w/o worrying about crime. I have lived in Asia(Bali & Singapore) a long time ago when it was very easy affordable and could do all the visa runs. Love Malaysia, especially Sarawak, but the depositing a large chunk of money into a foreign bank isn't appealing. This is my main concern. You are so an inspiration! Go Girl!Good points about heat sensitivity/hot flashes. Acupuncture really helped me, together with cooling foods. Nice you don't have to be on guard, like in the US!

Interesting tips, and it's worth the expense to check places out before thinking about relocating...I was stationed in Da Nang in 1966...anyway, Thailand is still my favorite country in the world...I was stationed there before Vietnam, and I was most recently in Bangkok about 3 months ago...a couple of weeks here, a couple of weeks there is great...tell us how you feel after a year or so in one of these places, about homesickness, conquering the languages, and the inevitable trials and tribulations...I've been outside the U.S. for all but 5 days of the past 12 years, and it's now an art-form for me....enjoy!...

How about the welcome a foreign traveler receives? Not the refugee stuff either, which you go ahead and get if you need to. But a real visa in a passport that says fine, yes, you may explore. Have you ever been told yes, you may visit a k-12 school? Look for things like seeing a foreign country, and yes, it was a nice place.

From my experience, people are warm and hospitable, especially if you show genuine interest in their culture. Southeast Asia, in particular, has been very welcoming in terms of both its people and visa policies. I have no desire ever to visit a K-12 school. Unless inquiring about your kids attending there's no need. Every destination has its unique vibe, and being open-minded and adaptable always helps make the experience memorable. Exploring new places and connecting with the local community enriches the journey!

Thanks, I am in Puerto Rico and I go out early morning or evenings in the summer. The weather is great now breezy well it's an island so it's always breezy nice inside hot outside lol. I am on disability because of my eyesight so I appreciate what you said about the sidewalks in Asia they are horrible here too but I have a carrier for my food on wheels so I have it out in front to warn me which helps. Still deciding what to do I have free Healthcare here because it pays me $120 each month plus free massages, reflexology, chiropractor everything dental, eye care, travel ect. Plus I get food stamps here $180, and my rent for 3 bd 1 ba was $300 now $400 but it's going up in Jan. $500 which is still good. I am a few minutes away from several beaches, walk to everything I need or I have Amazon which I love. Electric $35, water $28, wifi $300 free phone and phone service. Never mind it would be stupid to leave, plus you just cross the street traffic stops for everyone here it's a good life.

Lord the humidity would kill me due to my menopausal hot flashes (it began when I was 39 and im 55 now), its mostly gone away but I can bet it'd come right back with that kind heat lol

I understand! A few women in the comments mentioned since being in hotter climates, they don’t necessarily experience more frequent hot flashes. The hormonal triggers for hot flashes are the same regardless of climate. Since yours are mostly gone away, you should be good. I've had no issues, I'm just hot because of the heat and humidity.

I think the main culture shock for foreigners in malaysia is the toilet hand bidet or bum gun which made the toilets wet. And the toilet paper is outside the toilet and sometimes none.

I was somewhat used to the toilet paper situation and the bum gun from my travels, but the way food is served was a big shock for me. There were times I’d be waiting 10 minutes while others already had their food-I’m ready to eat too!😩😋

I'm decades away from retirement, but my parents recently returned to their home country in the Caribbean. That's my goal when I retire is their country or end up in SEA: Malaysia or Thailand. Been to both and enjoyed each. I think it may take time adjusting to the call to prayer in Malaysia. I booked a ticket to Asia with no research and my first stop was KL. I was surprised at hearing the prayer, but I knew what it was from the first time I heard it booming across the city in the early hours. This may surprise people if they're not used to it/unaware.

I can see how the call to prayer in Malaysia might catch someone off guard if they’re not familiar with it. It’s a prominent part of daily life here. While it might take some getting used to, it can also become a comforting reminder of the culture and rhythms of life here. I quickly got used to it, and I find it soothing. These days, I barely notice it unless I’m actively listening. You’ll typically hear it around the city, especially if you’re near a mosque, but the farther you are from the city center, the less likely it is to be noticeable. It’s fascinating how travel opens our eyes to the beauty and diversity of different traditions and customs. Living in a new place comes with plenty of adjustments, but as long as you stay open-minded and flexible, it can turn into an exciting and rewarding learning experience.
