Professor Karunakaran in this video speaks of the temple entry issue. Yes, he is right, disparity is wrong. However, in Hindu culture to view the caste system as a disparity is not the correct view. I am not interested in or speaking about modern India or the India under 200 years of British rule or the (about) 800 years of Muslim rule and after that a further 200 years (total more than 1,000) of Moghul rule, after which the British took over. This foreign rule of more than 1,200 years distorted, disoriented and damaged the Hindu culture, religion and society. The original unadulterated caste system that existed in India must have been a near perfect one. Each caste was independent, self sufficient and proud of its own caste status. There was 99.9% self-employment. There was no need to go begging anyone for help. If natural disasters struck the king helped. Yes, there was the issue of temple entry during that time and continued even during the independence struggle days. The original temple entry should be understood properly. Today we view any disparity among humans as a human rights issue. However, in this modern society of ours we have exclusive clubs, where only members can enter. We have Secret societies, legal and accepted, which are exclusive for only members. We have corporate offices where certain bathrooms are only for certain categories of workers and in canteens the seating is divided in the same way. In corporations there are floors that everyone cannot enter. In political circles too we have this disparity. We have signs in various places, which say, “No entry after this point” and/or “staff only”. In secretive labs there is severe security and the same is true in military establishments and in the offices of intelligence agencies. Such disparity exists in our 21st century society and we accept it as a necessity. The Hindu culture viewed the temple in ancient days, not as a place of worship or social gathering as it is now. It was a spiritual center, required to protect society. The deity inside had to be kept pure. Any deviation from that was said to bring harm to society. The scriptures gave very specific details regarding how to sustain the power and how to protect that power from diminishing. This is why only the king and the Brahmin community appointed to take care of the temple were allowed to enter. Even Brahmins visiting from other communities or other villages could not enter. However, such Brahmins were permitted to stand within the temple but away from the main area. The traders and farmers were given another privileged place. The worker caste stood even further, outside of the temple. This was based on the lifestyle of each caste and each caste in those days, due to the fear of God and under supervision of the elders strictly followed the caste customs and lifestyle. Hinduism considered the body to be capable of sending out vibrations, which can affect other humans and the surroundings, food, and the deities, etc. It is with this view in mind that temple entry was restricted. A daily bath, no meat consumption and many other disciplines were expected of humans to maintain purity that was required for divine and auspicious events and rituals, etc. Certain deities accepted meat, but not in Agamic temples. Hinduism considered these rules as science. Therefore, we cannot condemn the ancient temple entry system as a disparity. However after the foreign invasions and mainly after the British rule this system got distorted and therefore cannot be justified. However, we have to respect the ancient system that prevailed. Was there a caste superiority complex those days? I do not think so, but each caste was strict in maintaining its own caste purity. I will not call it caste superiority complex, but each caste was very strict in maintaining its caste purity. Every caste did this, not just Brahmins. As the Gita says, for a man of self-realization no such barriers existed. To that person gold and a cold of earth were same. Man and woman were same. Filth and purity were the same. There was nothing good or bad. Equanimity towards every experience was the natural state of mind for a self-realized person. Therefore, the old poet/saint Avvaiyar, who was a self-realized person sang: சாதி இரண்டொழிய வேறில்லை சாற்றுங்கால் நீதி வழுவா நெறிமுறையின் - மேதினியில் இட்டார் பெரியார் இடாதார் இழிகுலத்தார் பட்டாங்கில் உள்ள படி What it says is that there are only two castes. Those who are humane, kind and help others belong to the high caste and those who are opposite to that, unkind and inhuman belong to a lower caste. Then she concludes it by saying “That is the real meaning of the scriptures regarding caste”. As I said, she speaks as a self-realized person, but she is right. Adi Sankara when walking along the Ganges came across a hunter gatherer, who was carrying toddy in a leather bag and a carcass of a pig on his shoulder and was with his wife. It was Lord Shiva and Shakthi coming to teach Sankara a major lesson. Sankara saw this hunter gatherer coming and moved away from him and said “Please walk away from me”. Then the hunter gatherer asked, are you asking my body to move away or my inner self to move away? Sankara understood immediately the meaning of that utterance and his mind changed permanently. These are lessons for the self-realized Munis. In the ancient days all Hindus could not and did not follow and (need not have) followed such Vedantic attitudes. Hindus lived strictly by their traditions, customs, and ancestral laws. Such things are not applicable in modern society. The professor speaks of secularism. Ancient cultures were all secular. Naked tribes mingled with fully dressed village and city people. All kinds of cultures existed together. The dress and cuisine and lifestyle and culture were very diversified, but they lived in harmony. None laughed or criticized another culture. In today’s society do we have that kind of secularism? Definitely not. We are expected to behave and act and dress in a uniform manner. The secularism he speaks of is not the kind of cultural and religious diversity which always existed among all cultures in the ancient days. He is talking about so-called legal rights, rights of entry, property rights and so on. These are issues relevant to modern society and yes, they are required, but we cannot say that the ancient cultures were not secular. Of course, they were and in a much better way than our modern society. He mentions the rights of women. Yes, that is very important in our modern society. In all ancient cultures women were respected as the foundation of family and society. However, they were also protected by customs and traditions to safeguard their purity. Evolution considered it necessary, because of their most important role as the mother. Competitiveness and anger and possessiveness, and egoism, etc. were considered (I am sure by evolution itself) as detrimental to feminism and the nature of motherhood. Same with violence and fighting and killing. Kanchi Swami lived in the dream world of ancient Hinduism, which he knew was the best for mankind. He could not understand that this culture was gone. There was no way to bring it back. Today, yes, as the professor says women need total rights regarding everything and 100% freedom to do whatever they want, but they must understand that they are responsible for the consequences. Finally, he speaks of the Nandanar story. It must have happened. It took place in ancient India. As I said previously, the temple entry system was in place, and he worshipped from outside. He was a true Bhakta and therefore miracles happened. People respected him, even his Brahmin employer. He wanted to go to the Chidambaram temple. He went and was sleeping outside the village. Lord Shiva came in the dream of the main priest and said “My devotee is sleeping in such and such place, go and bring him to me.” The priest accepted it as divine request and told other Brahmins. They did not believe it and said only through a fire ordeal can we allow him to enter. The professor wrongly says that Lord Shiva said so; that he must pass the fire ordeal. That is not true. It is the skeptical Brahmins who said that. Nandanar went through the fire and when he came out he glowed and was a wonderous form to look at. All the Brahmins fell at his feet and carried him in a palanquin to the temple with music and dancing. After entering the temple, Nandanar simply walked into the inner sanctum and merged with God.

Karunanandan is saying our constitution should be rewritten but no efforts will be made because drivida model is incapable and focus only on keeping power by all means including vote for money and other immoral and unethical tactics... but he will never say - why not we give a try for Tamil desiya model ? because this is tamil nadu right.. we should give priority to mannin mainthar.. otherwise it will be disparity treatment for tamils. Agree sir ? Are you not biased Mr. Karunanandan ?
