Jimmy Carter Interview: His Unlikely Rise to Power & Presidential Legacy

President Jimmy Carter recalls the influence of his parents, growing up in the deep South during segregation, and his childhood ambition to be a successful naval officer. He discusses his unlikely presidential win, being labeled an outsider, and how he handled disappointment after not being re-elected.
James Earl Carter Jr., 39th President of the United States, was born October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia, and grew up in the nearby community of Archery. He was educated in the public school of Plains, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, New York, where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second nuclear submarine. On July 7, 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith. They had four children. When his father died in 1953, he resigned his naval commission and returned with his family to Georgia. He took over the Carter farms, and he and Rosalynn operated Carter’s Warehouse, a general-purpose seed and farm supply company in Plains. In 1962 he won election to the Georgia Senate. He lost his first gubernatorial campaign in 1966, but won the next election, becoming Georgia’s 76th governor on January 12, 1971. He was the Democratic National Committee campaign chairman for the 1974 congressional and gubernatorial elections. He won his party’s nomination on the first ballot at the 1976 Democratic National Convention, and was elected president on November 2, 1976. He served as president from January 20, 1977 to January 20, 1981. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”

Jimmy Carter is and was a great President, like many he had difficulties domestically and at times abroad, yet he always conducted himself with the highest moral standards, compassion, empathy, and honesty. As President his acts were great yet as an ex president and citizen he has accomplished so many great things for so many through his charitable works. The respect for others and especially his childhood conduct with his African American friends during Jim Crow and segregation (let alone integration) serve as a shining example of how our nation should treat ALL of its citizens. We need MORE people like him and similarly responsible people to LEAD us to our “better angels”. Thank you sir for all you do and have done for our great nation!

He is the best example of an actual SAINT the U.S. has ever given birth to. He showed the world what a true Christian is. All about charity and kindness. Doing good for those less fortunate than you. A man and President ahead of his time in many ways. He was laughed at for putting solar panels on the roof of the Oval office, nearly 50 years ago now, (which Reagan removed) but the world needs his policies today more than ever and the world of politics needs his integrity today more than ever.

My first presidential vote was in 1976 - for Jimmy Carter. My second, in 1980, was also for him! I remain proud of that! President Carter approached each task with focus, dedication, faith, and integrity. Furthermore, he had the country’s long-term interests at heart - his energy program being a prime example. He left an excellent record of achievement, on both the domestic and international fronts. The notion that he was a great ex-president, but a failed president is an empty cliche, parroted by those with hollow heads and no sense of history! Mr President, thank you for coming our way. The country was all the better for it!

President Carter is a great man, a man who could always be trusted, a man of great integrity and moral judgement, and, along with Lincoln, one of my favorite presidents. And as time has shown, he is absolutely our greatest ex-president ever, with the work of the Carter Center, his hands-on approach to building houses for people with Habitats For Humanity, and dozens of other causes that I can think of. President James Carter was a better former president than he was a president but that isn't to say that he did things as wrong as people think. He was just one of those 1 term presidents that many blame for the issues of those that came before and those that followed him. I love this man and I hope he feels like he did good in this world.

No, he was blamed for what happened on HIS watch. Double digit inflation, double digit interest rates, rising unemployment, national 'malaise'. Not to mention the fact that the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and the Iranians took the hostages. Carter looked weak. America needed leadership and they found that in Reagan, who turned the economy around, stood tall against the USSR and ultimately won the Cold War. One of the best things the American people ever did was to send Jimmy Carter back home, and to elect Reagan.

President Carter is for me quite significant in that in my study of the US Presidents, his was the first biography or at least thorough reading I'd done. Little did I know at that distant time, that he would still be with us; endlessly laboring across the world like a modern day Hercules in search of Atonement. Jimmy Carter was and remains a man of absolute good. While no one would compare him to a Teddy Roosevelt or even his fellow southerner Andrew Jackson, his appointment as US president was absolutely necessary at that time in history. Some presidents have left their mark because of what they accomplished while wearing the purple, but others have done so by what they did in their post Presidential phase. Jimmy Carter's labors continue. Future generations will look back on his sanctified endeavors at cleaning the worlds Augean stables as worthy of the highest recognition in the pantheon of US Presidential lives.

Carter was the first President I really understood as being president as a young boy. He did many good stuff but unfortunately his failures dogged him more than his success. 1) Camp david,2) Panama Cana,3) China 4) Dept of Energy which took over control of maintaining the nuclear force 5) Dept of Education too iirc 6) Focus on human rights 7) The national parks 8) Grappling with inflation and the economy that beset every nation but he got blamed for despite putting in measures to overcome which would bear fruit in Reagan's years. A thoroughly decent man. A man of God. But events conspired against him. It's now revealed that Iran was encouraged not to release the hostages before the elections in order to stymie his re-election. He took the blame for that and it cost him the Presidency and because of Operation eagle Claw where he accepted the advice of his military advisors to send just that small force to the desert. But from that failure, he approved and started a new special forces which now has morphed into the Navy Seals and Delta Force. And his life post presidency, what a meaningful contribution unmatched by any other ex-president. How this man bears no rancour, anger, bitterness, how he sought to fight racism in his state Another thing that also cost him at home especially on the economic front, was Congress. here we have a democratic congress (both chambers with good majorities), working against their own party leader for whatever narrow personal gains. This is what has always baffled me about the Democrats. How despite having a majority, they go against their own President and then complain when the other side gains power. Republicans can put all their differences aside with such small majorities and get their agenda done, whereas Democrats dont. They stymied Carter, they certainly did with Obama until eventually the Republicans gain control of Congress and blocked everything. Then when Trump, they all stood side by side and voted whatever he and McConnell wanted. The lesson is still not learned with Biden, you still have a narrow selfish minority demanding their way that is prepared to vote against Biden's agenda. And if Trump wins or the GOP retain control of teh House or even get the Senate, they are stuck with whatever agenda Trump and the extremist side of teh GOP comeup with.

I thought for the most part President Carter was a honorable person who was outside the Washington swamp and paid the price for it when an opportunity arose to go after him. In a way that made him not a good President. He needed to know how to get things done or at least not alienate those who could get things done. I have not seen it in my lifetime, but I think there could be Presidents who knows how to work the swamp yet have strong principles.

I think a lot of times he had good intentions but he did not think through some of the ideas suggested to him. He only wanted to show that he could get things done. If he had been a little bit more of a thinker, a little bit more educated he would have been a great President. But he was also a person who disliked those types of people. A fascinating person and President to think about though.

@@andrewpinson1268Carter himself has admitted that he should have cultivated better relationships with Congress. He said that perhaps he threw too many bills at them. What he could not abide was the pressure - sometimes bordering on blackmail - from people wanting particular projects or appointments to be carried out. Despite all this, he had a very good record of domestic legislation passed, and foreign policy successes. And, Carter was the one responsible for safely bringing home the 52 hostages from Iran. Regarding his education, he was always an excellent student in school, an honours graduate of Annapolis, a nuclear submarine officer, a farmer, businessman, state senator, governor and finally, president. As for his thinking ability, I’d say the Camp David Accords alone makes the point.

@@thomaschacko6320 I have read several books on a good number of the Presidents and Carter is one who intrigues me a lot. Being a sailor myself I was familiar with his education etc. I knew all about his squabbles with Congress. Yes he ran up against the swamp like they all do. Every country has the "swamp" to deal with. I felt he was a little to heavy handed with them. I like to compare him with Johnson who was a wheeler and dealer - probably corrupt as hell but could get things done. Ideally Carter IMO should had a few thousand of the swamp executed on the WH lawn, but maybe that might be a little unacceptable. Being a conservative some of his domestic policies were not my cup of tea. In the long run being to rigid in his beliefs and morals - though admirable - cost him in Congress and other places. Even in the past few decades I have disagreed with many of his stances on politics and social beliefs. But all in all a hell of a man.

I agree, one hell of a man: in addition to what I outlined before, he has been a Sunday lector and teacher (even as governor and, on occasion, as president). He has also been a diehard outdoorsman, experiences he related in a fabulous book, “An Outdoor Journal.” (One of his best.) Among his many books, besides presidential memoirs, are lessons in Christian faith, a children’s book, a collection of his poetry, studies on the Middle East, and advice on retirement and aging. I haven’t read them all, but have enjoyed the ones I have. Quite a remarkable selection! It’s interesting to hear you describe yourself as a conservative. Part of Carter’s problem was the rebellion within his own party, from the liberal wing that considered him too conservative. This gave rise to Ted Kennedy’s dumb-ass campaign! Sure, Reagan would have won anyway, but Kennedy only provided him with additional ammunition. This lifelong Democrat still finds Kennedy’s antics nauseating! Happy Fourth of July, by the way!

I can't think of an ex president who has done more to try and make society a better place. Habitat for Humanity, helping to monitor fair elections in other countries to just name a couple of things. The fact that he is still alive at 99+ yrs is more remarkable consider he went through a rather serious bout of cancer, despite the Hostage rescue debacle, and High interest rates. Think he is one of the most positive and optimistic people around. He tried, but he didn't get very much support from the Old Guard, especially Tip O' Neal. Jimmy Carter a very good and decent man. Think he could win handily in today's terribly decisive political climate.

The USA does not understand Africa. Sadly, they cannot see the economic and political decay Africans have under their own leaders. They mistake Africans for African Americans because they look the same. I live in South Africa. I read Carter's book "The White House Diaries" and thought the same thing about what he said about Zimbabwe. South Africa has decayed under the corrupt, incompetant ANC. South Africa does not need Apartheid or the ANC. It needs a third party that can tar roads, produce electricity, drinkable water etc without race laws, including Affirmative Action. Carter would not have understood my comment. He is old and from another era though.

I have all the opposite of love and respect for this man, I have a phd in Political Science studied at the best university in Iran and I know the facts and lived the consequences myself, this uneducated man without any necessary knowledge or skills made choices and did number of actions which were totally wrong, USA was on right path under Nixon and he was aware of the importance of the job to keep America in track and to insure this he made a mistake which led to Watergate and his resignation, in this situation a small minded man who you see in the video rose to power and his actions changed the world for the worst, my Rich country IRAN was on the brink to jump using all it's oil and geopolitical location and the baby boomers to concur the region and this vous got scared and fired all people in Iran table at the state department, trusted a lier molla, ruined our parents life, my life and other generations, whole region still at war, god doesn't bless mass siners such as Carter
