I think Kurt really wanted to have what he didn’t as a child. I think he saw this as a fairy tale love and I can’t blame him at all. Those are photos of Courtney at a Mudhoney/Nirvana show on January 6, 1989, months before Bleach was released (Portland photographer David Ackerman took them). Charles Cross, the author of Heavier than Heaven, wrote that the sticker's encounter took place at Nirvana's second gig in Portland in 1990, but he was wrong. In 1990, Courtney lived in Los Angeles and was a brunette. Plus he didn't know photos of Courtney at the January 1989 show existed.

It was Reading Festival UK when he asked everyone to shout to Courtney; it was a bit soppy to say outloud in a field but everyone seemed to go along with it & if it made him happy why not.. I read a Spin? article where he describes a dream about being at the top of some stairs for an awards ceremony & Courtney was with him, but it was how other people see her so she was this short dark figure with giant feet, then someone kicked her down the stairs & he screamed; so sad. That's for the next video! You're right, even though Nevermind was the number 1 album in America on Jan 11, 1992, they continued playing small clubs around the world since they hadn't blown up yet. Their Australian tour started in Sydney on Jan 24, 1992. The day after, they played Big Day Out, and continued touring Australia until Feb 7. They ended their Pacific Rim tour in Hawaii on Feb 22 playing a small club, but being in the States, the first date was sold out so an extra night was added. Thank you for watching!

The Portland story was made up. Never happened. Kurt and Courtney didn’t meet until 1991, when Everett True introduced them. They didn’t begin to date until months after that introduction. The Portland story was made up so it would appear they had a history and she didn’t just glom onto Kurt as his fame (and wealth) shot through the stratosphere. Everett True went along with the story that they already knew each other and he had reintroduced them, which he was asked to, for a while. He eventually said yeah, that never happened. He introduced them for the first time. Also, if you listen to each of them (Kurt and Courtney) tell the Portland story in old interviews, it’s never the same. They are the most unreliable narrators of their own lives; particularly when they became a couple. They also had the people they were close with back up some events that may have been (at the very least) exaggerated, as well as publicists, managers, attorneys, all of the resources of their record label, etc. Throw in major drug use, addiction, and unmanaged mental health issues, and I don’t think they even ever knew the truth about their relationship.

For that reason, Alanis was always considered a fake in the alternative world and she NEVER belonged to the grunge scene, even though Madonna secured Flea and Navarro to give the album alternative scene cred. You can't call Alanis the queen of grunge if she was releasing pop crap when the grunge scene was active and thriving. Simple reasoning.
