Nearly 25 years ago, a young Indian-American lassie and I took the bus from DF (yeah, it was still called that back then), disembarked in Acapulco and then took a bus another hour south of Acapulco. We brought a tent and pitched it inside the grounds of a Palapa restaurant right on the beach. We did nothing but play in the surf and sand, skinny dip at night under the stars and clearest of skies, eat, drink and screw for a few days. Nearly a quarter of a century ago.

From the UK I have been to Acapulco a number of times most recently 2018. Yes there is crime, yes there are areas you wouldn't go late at night or alone and yes of course there is poverty but I love the atmosphere of the place, the history and the people. A far stretch from hits hey day in the 50s, 60's, 70's and miles away from the usual tourist trap of Cancun and the Caribbean coast it really is a must to visit. The sites , smells and sounds of the Mercado Central where you pick yourself up a choco milk and a tostada as a snack or even a visit to the witchcraft stall to choose your Santa Muerte statue and wish good luck or even death if you believe it ! A fantastic city ..... I miss you Acapulco .

On the other side of the hill, going into the interior, is where its really dangerous. Ciudad Renacimiento is on the other side of the hill from the beaches but that's where the murder rate is extremely high. They had a wave of murders where teenage boys would kill taxi drivers (who lived there and worked in Acapulco) and take the cars on joy rides. Also in the mountains of Guerrero they grow a lot of poppies and are protected by a cartel. Calling Acapulco the world's most dangerous beach is lame clickbait, though, because the beachfront areas are the safest place to be in Acapulco.
