I live in Utah and have a gay LDS coworker. He’s been in a monogamous same-sex relationship for 2 years now, but says that his dream is to get married to a woman and start a family. I told him he can just as easily start a family with the man he’s dating (or some other man he would want to marry), but he thinks that having a family with another man would be “wrong.” It makes me feel bad for him (and the man he’s decided to leave eventually, and the woman he will marry who will be trapped in a loveless marriage) and other brainwashed people like him :( it truly destroys their lives and happiness

The saddest part about this is that both parties in those relationships are suffering. The men can't live their truths and the women aren't loved. The most telling part is how most of the wives were told and then convinced by their husbands that "SSA relationships" were a good and normal thing and that they should just accept it. They're all brainwashed into accepting misery and it's so sad.

I think the only relationship that is hurt is Jeff and Tanya's, at least from the recaps I've seen on KZbin. Jeff shows more attraction to males than females, and he has had a "close call" situation. That makes me think that he's gay but in denial. Coming out to their wives as bisexual wouldn't be a big deal in any other context but apparently it is when you're religious.

As someone who used to be like this, it is truly a miserable existence. I chose to date a man for several years to get acceptance from my family (not Mormon, but Muslim) and the saddest part is that it worked. They were nicer, more helpful when I struggled, more supportive, and didn't treat me like my existence was a plague anymore. But I was still miserable. I hated being with him, I hated myself because I could never believe it when I'd lie about being happy, I hated the praise from my family for "fixing" myself, I was constantly seeing people happily out and wishing I could be like them, and constantly wishing I was born "right." I constantly had to fight the urge to take myself off this planet. The worst part was people giving him sympathy for "being stuck with someone who doesn't love him" even though he knew since day 1 that I wasn't attracted to men and used my family situation to get to me. I truly hope those men got out okay and were able to accept who they are. It took years for me to finally embrace being a lesbian and I am SO much happier now. My family does still try to convince me to go back to living in the closet but luckily I'm stronger now and can tell them to fuck off.

As an ex-mormon who is also gay, this shit is genuinely horrific. It leads to depression and suicide. Utah has a frighteningly high suicide rate and this type of shit is part of that. When I came out to my mom she literally showed me a "Gay Mormon" who had a blog about living like this in the hopes that I would consider it. Thankfully, that guy eventually came to terms with the fact that he was fucking miserable and left his wife for a man (which actually didn't even destroy their family, they worked out a dynamic to still raise their kids together. It all worked out!) and he also wrote up an apology for his blog, because promoting this to young gay people in the church is SO FUCKING HARMFUL. It's infuriating. I hate it so much.
@willowwinkle8 күн бұрын
yeah genuinely horrific. My partner is ex-Mo. There's all this language about "we accept gays" that non LDS people hear but it doesn't mean what they think it means. It means suppressing your humanity and living a fake identity that is harmful for all involved. The women in this video who are talking about how happy they are is because they're taught they're worthless unless you are sealed to a man who can secret handshake you into LDS heaven. That said... on an individual level i know a lot of LDS/Mormon people who aren't like this and accept the gay/trans/etc. people in their families but are afraid to speak up. It's messed up. Glad you are ok.

Hell, I had an identity crisis when I could no longer deny that I was gay and I wasn't even confronted with homophobia in my family, at school or among my friends. It was just becaise nobody thought to tell me that being gay is an option that exists, is accepted and that I'm not the only one at my age in my region feeling that way, that was all! Finding out you're different after you've been(unintentionally) made to believe that there's only heterosexuality is confusing and scary enough, I can't imagine how terrifying it must to be to find out you're not straight in a social environment, where not being straight means losing your family, your reputation and possibly losing your freedom (threat of incarceration) and safety (threat of violent injury or death)! 😢😭
@LRM12o87 күн бұрын
@willowwinkle An awful amount of straight people seem to genuinely think that this "accepting homosexuality as long as it isn't acted upon" BS was a friendly and tolerant stance and that gay people could happily live in accordance to it. They simply lack the empathy or care to realize that they're asking people with normally distributed sex drives to live in complete abstinence, which is something they themselves would never accept - let alone live happily with - if they had to follow that advice themselves! 🤦 ...or they're all just evil and only pretend to genuinely think this, so can keep up a tolerant and inclusive facade. Some of them sure do, but I don't think they're the majority.

I second this. This is also my worst nightmare. I’m not religious, but I go to a private Catholic school that is predominantly conservative. In my religion class, we talk about politics and social issues such as “homosexual behavior” and “transgenderism.” It absolutely disheartens me every single time we talk about this because my school treats these normal human things as a disease or something to be cured (ESPECIALLY when it comes to being transgender). For example, my religion teacher compared “struggling with homosexual behavior” to “struggling with alcoholism.” It’s absolutely disgusting and it scares me to think that my ignorant classmates are being “educated” like this and will grow up to be hateful and full of bigotry.

@jijitters10 күн бұрын
@@pungetello I suspect you are aroace? People who experience sexual and/or romantic attraction would not feel fulfilled in relationships where they are denied those things. I know ace people especially don't like hearing this and can't bring themselves to understand it, but most people expect sex and sexual satisfaction to be a major factor of their relationships and it does not feel like a true relationship without it. When a non-asexual person is in a relationship and feels like their partner is not attracted to them, it is a major source of unhappiness, and it does significant harm to their self-esteem. I know it is very difficult for ace people to put themselves in this mindset since it seems to not be the same for them but this is so significant for most people that it is a common reason for breakups, cheating, divorce, and general unhappiness in relationships. Your partner finding your attractive, and you finding your partner attractive, is vital to most non-ace relationships. It's incredibly rare for romantic & sexual preferences to completely misalign, so almost certain it means they aren't romantically attracted to them either, and one is bad enough but lacking both sounds like torture. Those wives probably never truly feel loved by their husbands.
@pinktlrb10 күн бұрын
@jijitters I get what you're saying, but I honestly believe that thinking that way is detrimental to everyone, regardless if they're aro, ace or neither. It's also unfair and reductive to assume that someone who thinks like op must be aro/ace and just doesn't “get it.” I think people need to examine why they feel they *need* to be in a romantic relationship, and why their self-worth is so dependent on the subjective attraction of others. People can have happy and fulfilling lives without romantic relationships, but oftentimes society's emphasis on romance means that romantic relationships are always, *always* prioritized over friendships, and people are never willing to be as emotionally vulnerable with a friend they've had for years than a romantic partner they've been dating for a month. It's honestly sad how often people overlook the people already in their life because they can't see themselves as happy without a romantic partner, to the point where they'd rather stay in a toxic relationship than be without a romantic partner.

"The most supportive, most homophobic people ever" so accurately describes mormons. I grew up in the mormon church, and knew I was a lesbian around age 16ish. I stayed in the church until I was 19, and reconciling my queer identity with the beliefs I was raised to have was some insane mental gymnastics. I was never kicked out of anything, never yelled at or abused, but there was this expectation that either I would grow out of it, or that I would "have faith" or whatever and marry a man anyways. Thanks for covering the topic, and making fun of these guys in a more respectful way than some! A lot of people mock mormons incessantly without realizing that while they chose to be like that, many of them have been indoctrinated from birth, and many do not have a safe way to leave, so some commentary/comedy around them just feels like people laughing at my trauma. I grew up in a Christian church and it was always hammered into us that it's okay to have same sex attraction provided you NEVER EVER act on it. Your options are being single for life or marrying the opposite sex. That's all. We even had one service where they paraded this poor lesbian in front of all of us and she basically bawled through her whole "testimony" about how she was attracted to women but trying to follow "God's law" by not acting on her feelings. Agonized, in front of a judgmental crowd, about why God would give her these feelings and then condemn her to be alone forever instead of having a family. The worst of course was when the pastor then COMMENDED HER for being such a good example of a Christian for not "giving in to sin." It absolutely messed me up. Years later I found the love of my life--a woman--and I am now the black sheep of my family. Religion does a lot of damage to people like us.

This was actually very useful. I recently moved to Utah for work and have been so bewildered by the “gay is a choice” vernacular. I’ve been in so many arguments saying “obviously it isn’t. Is being attracted to men/women a choice for YOU?” Until seeing this video, I did not clock that they see same sex attraction and gay as independent things: SSA refers to feelings which cannot be helped; being “gay” is “acting on it” and this is the part that they see as a choice. This newfound comprehension gives me a route to arguing better in my role as an ally in Utah. Thank you!

To be honest, I’m not personally a fan of the common rhetoric of gayness being a born trait either. It makes it sound like homosexuality (whether that be attraction or behaviour) should be accepted because “it can’t be helped” and treats it as an affliction that doesn’t happen out of one’s agency - rather, I think we should accept sexuality regardless of whether the homosexuality ultimately stems from nature or nurture I’m not sure what the scientific consensus on being gay is, ie. as being the result of nature or nurture or a mix of both, but given that there are cases of trauma or upbringing affecting sexual desire and behaviour, it feels wrong to rely on it being an innate trait as a justification for it being right (I don’t know if I conveyed that well, but I sometimes think, what if I’m gay because of certain experiences I went through? Would that not be acceptable if it was actually a choice?”). I think ultimately we shouldn’t be using scientific or religious reasoning for lgbtq acceptance. can’t it just be out of respect for human difference?

@@matchasketch8224 from an allyship point of view, I think the safest thing is to assume that whether it is innate/genetically determined or a result of early childhood, hormonal, or other factors, research bares out that it is not a conscious “choice” that people make, nor is it malleable in most situations, and it can be extremely harmful to try to force change. Typically this discussion is being had with people who believe that being gay IS a conscious choice, and moreover, it’s a harmful and toxic choice. Having the “well, we should accept sexuality in other people regardless of whether it’s genetically determined” is pointless because they do not believe there is any genetically determined sexuality except for cishet marriages anyways. They’ll often get offended if you call humans “animals” and they don’t believe in evolution. So if taking the position it’s genetic helps them understand that it may not be a conscious and malicious choice, and may even be an intentional piece of God’s design, I say go for it.

As someone who 1) is queer, and 2) used to be a part of this religion, this is literally the path that people take. The options for queer mormons are to stay single, enter a beard relationship, or leave the church. They literally have resources and testimonials for queer youth "Struggling with same sex attraction" (yes, that is the term used by the church) where people will "experience same sex attraction" and then enter a heterosexual marriage with God "at the enter" and be happy. That's the way that it goes. This show is more real than most reality TV.
@liky724411 күн бұрын
i went through the exact same thing. i came out at 13, born into the church, and have still active family members who dont quite understand. it truly is sad to think how many people might be denying this part of themselves out of fear of their salvation or being looked down on by their ward members :/

I feel bad for the woman only, how can you be with someone for years, never tell them you love them, have children, then turn around and claim that you’re gay? Maybe if they didn’t know or was questioning, but to think they willfully got into a long term relationship is just cruel.

I grew up mormon and this kind of thing happens a lot. I left around age 14 because I kept being told that my attractions were wrong, that I had no power as a woman and had to be subservient to a man. Obviously they don't word it that way because it sounds bad, and the mormon church is really good at making things sound "good" But I had a friend in high school that was gay and very adamant about how his queerness was actually just another hurdle that god gave him to overcome. Shit made me so sad, bro. There is a good ending, though. I recently found him on insta and he's been in a queer relationship for a while and they run a cute little soap business, haha.

I was that kid. Adults that were safe spaces, not trying to push hard either way (you have to embrace yourself! Or you have to hide to be "worthy"), just accept me exactly as I was, were life saving. Eventually, I did open up to self-acceptance because I went to a queer Mormon youth thing (not sponsored by the church obviously). I HIGHLY recommend looking into Affirmation. It's an organization that just embraces you exactly where you are in your LGBTQ/Mormon journey. This was also life saving for me. They have youth specific programs Definitely the Mama Dragons too, they're a group of moms of LGBTQ+ kids with some sort of history with Mormonism. Another zoologist and ethologist here, and I am of a firm belief that every single species that has a common social gender and sex "binary" has at least one individual who could be considered "queer". The cool thing about studying and understanding other lifeforms is figuring out that expressions, social norms, cultures and experiences are sometimes very similar to ours, but sometimes incomprehensible to us as well. That's why "queer" is the best term here. Some ancient human cultures had homosexuality so normalised it was just daily life, therefore they wouldn't have referred to themselves as "homosexual". And in this similar sense, a gender or sexuality in humans might be differently perceived in snakes or weevils, for example. There are individuals among non-human animals who could be considered asexual or transgender in our terms as well, but compared to us, they don't tend to have any social stigma placed upon them, so someone who is e.g. a male individual but prefers to socially express themselves as feminine for their species, to their peers they wouldn't be transgender, they just *Would Be.* I find that beautiful, and that's something we could have as well if people weren't assigned genders. But all in all, queerness is in all of us, to some extent. We're a bunch of cells who all share genes with others. These experiences that we have are so incredibly simple yet complex. It's endearing to know that you're never really alone and that you can find friends everywhere. And yes, this number is strictly about documented examples, not about the precise number.
