Kurzweil PC3 Sounds 03/2013

UPDATEd version with some sounds added, INFO pages with controllerdata updated. New file can be found at the same location (31.04.´13).
Demo of some sounds I did the last months. Some are my own, but most ported from a K2000 and tweaked to my taste. No Kore-Expansion needed, no samples, just taken from base ROM. Some use the ability of the PC3 to build new multisamples from existing material.

A great sounding keyboard! Nicely played. Kurzweil just need to come into this century and implement a larger, colour touch screen for easy editing. The current Kurzweil screens aren't much different to that on my old DX7, which I bought new in the 80's! After all, Korg's entry level Krome has the best screen in the business.

Well, I guess we'll just see what we'll see. I initially wanted, but then dismissed the PC3K & finally decided on a Roland V-synth GT. I even thought of buying a KingKorg + MS20 Mini. At the very last minute, I decided to go w/a Yamaha Motif XF, but then I literally had my cursor on the "BUY" button (for the Motif). I was a single click from buying a Motif XF, but then I changed my mind again. LOL. I finally opted for the PC3k. I hope I am not disappointed. (VAST seems interesting & swayed me)

Yes... some time ago the owner of the site has rearranged everything, gave it a newer and professional look and content. The forum itself was placed differently, but still exists, but the link is not correct any more. However, you have to sign in to become a member (free) and then you should be able to find this and much more. It´s worth it.

nice demo. I was debating on this or the nord electro 4, mainly to use as a controller (expensive controller) and this really helped my decision. I prefer synth action keybeds for the music I make (hip hop/electronica) and wanted something I could actually use the sounds on as well. It's also the cheaper of the 2. And you can't go wrong with Kurzweil as far as quality goes. Thanks for the vid...

A touch-screen would be nice. More RAM would be nice too. I think the PC3K has 128MB max. That's pretty good,....for 1999. (my Triton, Motif & XV5080 all have 64-128MB) Kurzweil should use a solid state hard drive like the Korg Kronos. Some Analog modeling would be nice too, like the Kronos, Trinity/Triton MOSS, Yamaha EX5 & PLG150-AN expansion, etc. In the 1980's-1990's, Kurzweil was an innovator & made the most technology advanced keyboards on the market. Now it seems they've lost their edge.

I also wanted to ask you about Kurzweil's "VAST" synthesis. I'm not too interested in acoustic type sounds. (piano, guitar, brass, etc) I have plenty of those on my Roland XV5080 + Kronos & Yamaha Motif, EX5 (which all have "analog modeling") I'm more interested in (& love) analog, electronic, digital, etc & "synthy" type sounds. How is the PC3K for synthy type sounds? Does it excel in that area? I still haven't dismissed the PC3K & I've always wanted a Kurzweil, ever since playing K250 & K1000.

Nice Demo. IMO, the guys doing the official PC3K demos for Kurzweil, they don't seem to know when to shut their pie holes. I know they're trying to sell a product & all that, but what's really needed is,...less talking & more playing. I don't want or need to be "told" what the PC3K can do,...I want to HEAR what it can do. Great demo.

Thanks for the vid... is this a PC3 or PC3K ? is there any difference between them (Sound quality wise ) I am going to buy one but I can't get my hands on one because nobody around here has one in store .. only thing I can do is watch the demos on YT , but i can't make a judgement ( although they both sound good to me on YT ) just by watching and listening to the demos , and once i buy it ( E-bay) I can't return it ) most of the things for some reason sound good on YT .. for instance, I've watched several Krome demos and I really liked it but when I tested one at the Store it sounded kind of cheesy and muffled and cheap ! I can't afford to let this happen if i decide to grab a PC3 or pc3k .. What do u think ? Thanks a lot !

Hi, I had the same impression after I played on a Kronos the first time. But that was after I bought my PC3. It´s just a "no K" version. They are the same, just with or without the ability to load samples. And it´s my first Kurzweil ever after 30 years with Korg and Yamaha. It changed my way of hearing. On first glance many sounds seem to miss treble, but now I think they don´t. They seem to be standard and boring, but they just sound kind of more natural and usually fit into a mix without any further tweaking. It´s so well balanced without any exciting earcandy on first glance. Kind of hard to realize after so many years with pushed sounds. Often critisized, the "old, dull pianosound" has some deepness that I don´t experience with the other machines. Programmingwise it´s the most complex machine I ever owned and I am still happy with it. The only thing I would like to have is the K version, but can´t afford it right now. Buying a synth without checking the keys before is a risk I also took - same problem here, no instruments available in my area. I have the synth key action and it´s different from the Motifs or Korgs. But I like it, it has a kind of soft lower stop and can be played pianostyle and fast also as a synth should do. Somehow gives me a better feel. After adapting to the layout and controls I think it is much better designed for live performance than any other synth I owned. It´s kind of hard to say, but the whole package has some differnt kind of spirit behind it. It´s more like a convenient professional tool but a product that wants to "impress the masses." If you understand what it´s about and you want it, get it.

@@biggrime Owned the kronos 9+ years and it is so vast that the time to conquer it is a lot. I replaced the solid state drive from the 62gig to 500gig. After all these years and bought several add-ons for it feel it is a lot more than I need. Yes, the sounds are anything you could imagine but the kurzweil is incredibly intense with V.A.S.T and I can do the same with it and as deep as it is don't get as lost programming. Really missed pc-3 76 after I sold it years ago and had some truly one of kind keyboard samples cp-70, cp-80 were really unique. I gave the kronos 88 to a close friend to take it on and told him it has a 1200 page parameter guild so bone up! When it comes to composing music don't want to get bogged down doing more programming than actual playing. That happened too much for myself because always wanted to come up with sounds no one has heard. In the end kurzweil is an excellent balance of quality, playability, programmability and value(imho).

Actually I have a Kronos X 88 & it's amazing! I remember back in the 80's & 90's, Kurzweil was so far ahead of the competition. I dreamed of a K250 & later I wanted a K1000 but couldn't afford one. (got a Korg M1) I always wanted a Kurzweil Keyboard, but now that I can afford 1, I'm not sure I want 1. I was thinking of buying a PC3K & that's why I've been listening to demos here. It sounds really great, but the more of it I hear, the more I feel it's just not in the same league as the Kronos.

I don't know what you mean about "the market". (telling me things) I don't pay attention to marketing, however, I do give some attention to certain technological specs. (like polyphony, RAM, ROM, etc) Since you brought up programming, I read that the PC3K's interface/OS is not the most user friendly. What is your opinion of that? I've also read that Kurzweil has excellent product & customer support. True? Thanks for the ROM specs. 128MB of ROM & The Kore 64 has another 64MB of ROM, yes?

Well, I got a PC3K6. I was going to get a Roland V-Synth GT, then changed my mind to Yamaha Motif XF. I literally has my cursor on the "Buy it" button, but changed my mind again @ the last second. So far the PC3K is interesting. I am not "blown away", (like I was w/my Kronos X) but I am very satisfied & do not regret my purchase. (it has some great sounds!) My main concern is the difficult, user interface. I am not accustomed to Kurzweil & it seems very complicated. Can you (please) tell me just how to alter FX in a program? (alter the amount of, or time for reverb, delay, add/change effects, etc?) I don't see how to do it in "effects", nor do I see it when I try to "edit" a "program". Is it something you could explain easily & briefly? Thanks.

***** Thanks, I found it. I was messing around a little & tweaking the effects. The PC3K has a really HUGE (seems like there are 100's of FX) & awesome FX section that sounds great. It's too bad the PC3K has no "Input". My god, that would be awesome! I love the effects on my Triton & Kronos X. I often plug my vintage synths into the Korg's input & use their effects. (Korg really does have great FX). PC3K's FX are amazing too & every bit as good, but again, lack of an input is a bummer. :-( The only other complaint I have with the PC3K, is that is has only 2 velocity layers, whereas the Triton & Motif have 4 & Kronos has 8. But that doesn't really seem to matter, as much as one might think. IMO, the PC3K seems less like a MUSIC workstation, & more like a SOUND workstation. VAST seems to give you almost unprecedented control & creativity, over the individual samples, sounds, layers, programs, FX, filters, etc. The PC3K's acoustic pianos are not in the same league as the Kronos, but no ROM based system can compete with a streaming, solid state drive. But the PC3K's piano has a unique sound & character all it's own. Well, that's all for now. I might have a few more questions later, but I like to mess around & try & figure things out for myself. PS: Do you know of any sites that have free, PC3, PC3K, K2500, etc, samples/programs, I can load on my PC3K? I Googled it & found a few, but I want more, especially electronic & digital sounds, analog synths, pads, etc.

WHERE CAN I GET SUPPORT for my PC3K? 1) How to set the tempo of a song to a mode where tempo does not change when I change to another song. 2) How to set a foot switch for start/stop of song? 3) When in record, used to be able to hold enter and then hold down a key to erase that key on my 2500. BTW, I haven't completely dismissed the PC3K. Synths are about sound, but they're also about character & the "whole package". (that is true) The PC3K does sound (& look) great, even if it's not in the same league as the Kronos. I've always wanted a Kurzweil & I still may end up buying a PC3K. BTW, I can't seem to find any specs, regarding the amount/size of internal waveforms. Do you know how many megabytes of waveforms the PC3K has? (& the total number of waveforms?)

Have zero noise on any samples with the PC3 and am told have the quietest studio ever heard by all my visitors. Use EON 300 speakers and the studio is small so if you are going to hear noise it would be there.

And yes I agree with you about gigs instead of megs. The PC3K can't sample, but can load & play samples w/it's gigantic 128MB of RAM. 128MB? Really? In 2013? My Roland XV5080 has 128MB of RAM & it was released in 2000. My Yamaha EX5 (from 1997) has 64MB RAM. I think instead of the PC3K, I might get a Korg KingKorg + MS-20 Mini, or....a DSI Prophet 12. The chances of my getting the PC3K are looking worse & worse.

My friend, a guitar is NOT a synthesizer & that's a bad analogy. (but some guitars are better than others) When it comes to synths, the sound is what's important to me. I agree the a synth is more than just technology. (& as amazing as the Kronos is, my Triton is still my personal favorite) But w/modern synths & workstations, better technology (& more features) usually = better synth. This is especially true w/sample & PCM based synths. Ultimately I guess it's a matter of personal preference. =D

Uhm, the 361 has no USB drive, just a slot for memorycards. But you can connect it to a Computer, there it will autmatically make a "virtual drive", where you can put suff in and load it then. It is explained in the manual.

@@Kaffimusic my PC3k has 2 USB slots already. The „but“ is here to get a proper algorithm which button should be Putten in which mode (song, storage, master or Midi etc.). In my opinion that monster won’t follow me…

@@АлександрЛапченко-н4е Take a USB stick with your Kurzweil-Data. No packed data, naturally. Put it into the 3k. Press "Storage". Navigate though the stuff to the file you want to load. Press "select". Press "OK". Answer the question where to you want to load. Execute. Done.

Why, because if you have selected a certain timbre or instrument that you need to record, it disappears immediately if you press the STORAGE button. If you go the other way: press SONG, then the stupid METRONOME turns on immediately, which cannot be turned off or changed in tempo, then EVENT appears on the display with a certain numbering that does not allow you to systematize anything, and I tried many times to record there, but then find these EVENTS weren't possible…It’s a huge problem, isn’t it so?

I guess Kurzweil could implement all of the above. Or you could just go out and buy a Kronos! Instead of just playing catch-up, Kurzweil should jump ahead - get back to being the leader. Korg has that title at the moment. Keyboard technology always lags years behind computer technology. Nowadays we should be talking gigs, not megs, with touch screens and solid state drives. Keyboard companies have to incorporate the computer age - the technology is the same so there is no excuse.
