When I opened my K2500 kybd, I wondered if the 4 wire power connector had come loose or was even connected. However the floppy didn't work without it, so connect I did. Two days later the floppy drive won't mount discs at all. So I'm looking at upgrade options. My K2500 has been very reliable and handy since 1999.

@HankCoffey
@HankCoffey 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's hope. You can upgrade everything on a J board pretty easily. I got my SCSI2SD from a eBay seller Synthplus. He made the bracket. A website called SamplerZone sells them also. Your OS doesn't support the larger 2 gig drive partitions, so I would upgrade to the last OS 3.87J. Synthplus on eBay has all of this stuff. I don't want to direct link people off of KZbin, just search the parts and you should find them easily. 👍

Very helpful, thanks. What is the USB port for, next to the card reader? You can no longer buy (register) MagicIso, what do you recommend to manage the files on the card (save from PC to card)?
@HankCoffey
@HankCoffey Жыл бұрын
I don't know what MagicIso is. A computer will only recognize the first partition on the SD card. Unless a hacker writes you a partition map. The other drive ID partitions on the SD card would have to be written with something like Chicken Systems Translator. You can make the SD cards using UNIX if you know what to do. Messing with the old keyboards is complicated. The USB is for flashing/modifying the drive's firmware. I think it can be powered from there if needed.
@noisesintheattic4202
@noisesintheattic4202 Жыл бұрын
@@HankCoffey Thanks Hank. MagicIso is the program SynthPlus recommends. You can add files (KRZ) to existing images (which are already on the SD card), 6 in my case. I have the trial version. This shows all Kurzweil images, but you need the full version to save.
@HankCoffey
@HankCoffey Жыл бұрын
@@noisesintheattic4202 Scott at SynthPlus? See if he'll give you the full version. It's been years since I messed with libraries. I made my SDs, then made backups, so I'm done. At least Kurzweil is FAT16 format. Working with Ensoniq format is an absolute nightmare. There are ways to do what you want. None of them real easy. Unless you get your Magiciso or use Chicken Systems Translator. But Translator isn't very user friendly though. Find someone that can make you a partition map to flash to the starting sector of your SD cards... The computer will acknowledge all drive partitions then. They'd have to have the sector info off of the SCSI2SD drive flash xml. In the end, it's way less stress to just use plugins. You have to be a hacker to work with SCSI2SD libraries for old samplers.

I saw both your HxC and this scsi2sd conversions. I had some questions if you get a chance 1) I assume the floppy emulator runs on a different ribbon cable so you could have left the emulator in and installed the scsi drive like a hard drive inside the k2000 ? 2) Assuming both are connected ,can you use the scsitosd to pull in all those images you had on the emulator into the scsi drive ? 3) If you create new sounds or collect your fav sounds from the above and want to store them as a collection can is there enough room on the SD card to add new programs ? 4) have you done anything else new on your K2000? thanks in advanced.
@HankCoffey
@HankCoffey 10 ай бұрын
The Gotek works as a floppy drive, the floppy is a different cable, yes I could have left it in, but I want to be able to change SD cards. Can't do that internally, and I didn't want to plug the scsi2sd in the back every time to use it. You can set up a scsi2sd to have more than 4 2 gig partitions, I think 7?... I don't feel like typing anymore on these specifics... Free SD space is free SD space.... I fully upgraded this Kurzweil (see the playlist on my channel) and stopped working on it. It is on a storage shelf in my room, I use software mostly and I am a guitarist, I power my old hardware up every few months, but no, don't use it anymore. Not much. I just don't mess with this technology anymore, what I know is in the videos. And I've forgotten a lot of that. Don't use HxC, I switched to FlashFloppy firmware, it was better, but again, I don't know if that is relevant anymore, I do not keep up with this hardware anymore. Sorry. Maybe I will catch up with what is going on with these in the future. But man, computers are so much more convenient. Best of luck with your project, for more info, look up Garth from Samplerzone, and Scott Bray from SynthPlus (ebay).

@@das250250 check out the hardware section on Samplerzone . com. There is stuff like ZuluSCSI and SCSI Goteks available now. I am sure you can partition about 6-8 SCSI drive IDs on one SD card now, So there may not be a need to swap cards if you want to keep the drive internal. Man, I hate typing, best of luck with your setup. I got my stuff setup how I want it, I am not messing with the setup stuff anymore. Tired of the formatting and xml flashing and ripping back IMGs, and everything else. Why keep doing it? My stuff is done. Later!

Hey Hank, thanks for this awesome video. I have a q though: each scsi device says it can read around 2gig's of information and you showed us a 16gig card. So, did you make 8 partitions of 2gig each on that card or how did you do this? Cheers from Belgium.
@HankCoffey
@HankCoffey 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Vain, the 16gig is just so I am sure I have enough room on the card. It is still only 4 2gig partitions. Because this device can only act as 4 IDs (virtual drives). 4 of 8 partitions would be unusable. I hear that the newer 6.0 scsi2sd drives can act as more drives than 4. If so, you can then use more partitions on the card. scsi2sd 5.x can only be flashed as 4 drives. Other keyboards may support bigger than 2gig partitions. It's just Kurzweil k2000 only supports 2 max. Depending on the OS.

@@HankCoffey Ah, ok thanks Hank. It's just that I recently installed a scsi2sd 5.0 drive in my K2000 but I didn't buy any sd cards yet. I was planning on buying a bunch of 1gig cards and use these individual cards to flash ISO files onto them. Someone told me you could use those sd cards to mimic a cd-rom which then could be loaded into the memory of the K2000 by the scsi2sd emulator. You have any knowledge of this? Thanks for your time man. Really appreciate it.
@HankCoffey
@HankCoffey 3 жыл бұрын
@@vainsacrosanct2014 that will work, but the iso has to be flashed to the starting sector of the drive ID. If you are wanting to do one iso per 1 gig card you can Flash the iso using something like Balena Etcher. But that will only flash to the starting sector of a SD card. I have SD cards with 4 CDR isos on them, but they have to be flashed to the starting sector of each drive ID for the Kurzweil to recognize the ID as a CD-ROM. To flash these isos, I had to use DD command in Unix. As you can see, this stuff can get real complicated. With DD, I basically command to start the iso to the starting sector of a drive ID. You get this starting sector number from the SCSI2SD utility flash. I really can't explain all of the Unix stuff in these comments man 🤣.
@HankCoffey
@HankCoffey 3 жыл бұрын
@@vainsacrosanct2014 but to try to simplify things... if one of your drive IDs is starting sector zero... you can flash a ISO using Balena Etcher to a SD card, and that drive ID should recognize the CDR.
