We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version kzbin.infoUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

I have a rental house, and I honestly prefer the Kwikset for that. The house has been broken into in the past and they just kick the door in. Even with a deadbolt, this is the case No one takes the time to drill out the locks, they just kick the door in. Locks only stop people from casual entry. If they want in, they will get in.
@TubysBasement4 жыл бұрын
Get a proper door with the strikeplate drilled deep into the beams, use 3" screws. They will wake up the whole neighborhood and take at least 10 minutes to kick it in. If someone is willing to stand there and kick the door for that long and make so much noise then sell your rental property, the hood is too bad!

Us knife makers drill 60+ Hrc steel all the time, granted I use seriously high end solid carbide drills for that purpose. Said drill bits can cost at least 3 times what the schlage deadbolt costs lol BTW, thanks for validating my purchase. I figured the Schlage was a higher quality unit, especially once you take one glance at the castings. Kwitset castings can hardly be called that, while the Schlage is beefy as can be.

I’ve been in my house, about 12 years. The lever type lock set was already here and just now has a problem with the cylinder not fully going back in. It is a Kwikset. So, am I right, in thinking they’ve gone down, in quality? Glad I watched this before buying a new set!
@actionjksn3 жыл бұрын
It's not that they have gone down in quality it's just that they have never been high quality and they have always been an order of magnitude worst quality than Schlage. They have always been available for a slightly cheaper price and they have always been cheaper for a reason Never buy Kwikset locks, unless you really don't care about security at all.

Hi Wayne - Perhaps helpful to remind people that it is possible to rekey the Schlage to match existing locks. Any decent hardware store, in about 10 minutes. I'm a layman with some technical ability and have done several - no sweat. Have older Schlage so swapped out a few springs and pins to resist drilling, picking and bumping. Oh! My wife was locked out and the locksmith was extremely frustrated and apologetic about not being able to pick or bump them! he had to force them.

One problem I found with Schlage (at least at Lowes) is that they pack 5 or 6 locks/deadbolts in a lot with the same key code. For example I went to Lowes to get new locks after an unwanted houseguest vacated the house. When installing the lock, I noticed the key was basically flat ... i.e.: easily picked with a rake (did it). So went back to exchange it for keys that have more differences in the pin depths ... instead of the key being 35343 for more of a one that was 57384 (made up numbers). Now when looking at the keys to make sure I got one that had varying pin depths, I noted that the slat of the same dead bolt styles had the same key code on the box, and the slat had 5 or 6 locks. It's nice if you're replacing many many locks, but if your just replacing 2 and the unwanted guest knows where you buy your hardware, it's easy for the unwanted person to go and buy 1 dead bolt of the same style and have the exact key that fits your new lock (unless you bought the last 2 from the slat). Now what I think Schlage should do is to only put a maximum of 2 locks that use the same key code in on a slat that they sell to places like Lowes, etc. That way it's more difficult for someone to go buy the same style dead bolt lock and have the same key. I think Lowes, etc. should have a few people who can re-pin locks, so if you want multiple locks with the same key, they'd re-pin it to fit that key vs. straight out of the box. They did this for a lock my roommate bought years ago, don't know if they still do this now or not. Now if I was a thief, noticing this would be a possible gold mine... i.e.: notice someone buying the dead bolt, follow them home to find out where they live, go back to the store buy the same style lock, go back to the home and wait till everyone leaves and just use the key to get in ... no real need to break anything. Schlage is a better lock than Kwikset, but selling ones with a virtually a flat key pin and a store having multiple locks with the same key on a slat, defeats this. Thankfully I found a couple in a style I liked that was the last ones they had and wasn't a flat key type to get around these, but Schlage should be aware of this.
@z15225 жыл бұрын
Stquinn has it. The scenario would necessitate you loitering for hours, until a person finally bought a lockset, then you must both follow them all the way home, unobserved, yet also somehow make note of which set they purchased, unobserved, so as to buy the same one. Then, monitor their home regularly until they have installed the unit, finally making your entry feasible. Meanwhile, ordinary burglars with pry tools or sledge hammers could have robbed scores of enticing homes.
@JoeDiGiovanniIV4 жыл бұрын
They only make 4 locks keyed alike. This is great for people who want their doors keyed alike, and the odds of needing more than 4 keyed alike is on the rare side, and besides that, even if someone knew exactly where you bought your lock theres no guarantee that there would be any left with your same key. That would mean having to buy one of each that is stocked in the box sleeves of 4. At this point, it's safe to say if someone is that determined to get in, they're doing it in a very unreasonable, unrealistic, expensive and potentially and most likely unsuccessful way
@homeguestunton3 жыл бұрын
For knobs, Schlage isn’t better the latches are a design flaw which means when it gets older, The latch will either get stuck inside, Or completely jam up and get you stuck in your house, And the knob will just turn, When the other internals are fine. While with Kwikset when they get jammed it’s always the retracting pin or just needs lubricant.

If anybody thinks he is pushing Schlage Locks for financial reasons I can tell you he is being perfectly honest about this. I do home improvements including door installation and I only recommend Schlage Locks for residential grade locks. Kwikset locks have always been inferior quality to Schlage Locks. I've been changing and installing locks professionally for over 25 years and Kwikset has never been as good. Not even close. Any Schlage lock you can buy is better than a residential grade Kwikset lock. I actually clicked on this video because if he had said that Kwikset locks are better then I was going to call him out on it. Fortunately he gave you good advice and he obviously knows more about locks than I do while I probably know more about installing doors than he does because that's what I do for a living.

This video is 6 years old, has kwikset improved since then?
@derekbroestler76879 жыл бұрын
Great video on the comparison between the two. As a fellow locksmith I agree, the Kwikset "smart"key is absolute junk... I can't tell you how many of these things I've seen fail, sometimes in just a few months... Add to that their weakness against forced entry (which lets face it, is the usually the preferred method by criminals) and I recommend customers avoid these at all costs... What's REALLY disappointed me however is to see Baldwin use the same cylinders for their "Prestige" line. Customers assume they're buying a "real" Baldwin, only to get a the same cylinder as a $20 Kwikset. (at least Baldwin replaces them free of cost when they eventually break)
@waynewinton9 жыл бұрын
yes it is. I used to like Baldwin but am now pretty disappointed.
@derekbroestler76879 жыл бұрын
Their standard products are still quality, and use the Schlage C keyway, and are ACTUALLY 100% lifetime guarantee on all parts and finish, which you can't beat... The BIG problem is that the box stores either ONLY stock the "Prestige" or their selection of the original Baldwin is so small you can miss it even if you know what you're looking for, so you pretty much HAVE to go to their website these days...

they haven't figured it out yet. Schlage or Kwikset or any of the lock manufactures, I have 4 locks I did something to that makes them totally secure. no bumping or picking. all they need is anti drill features in the right places. the idea is to get in quickly. not going to happen with my locks. loose the key and your having to break a window to get in. only way.

+Wayne Winton good point.. also at some point locks defeat there purposes of safety when windows are so easy to break.. and your-in. But I still have kwikset smartkey's on my door cause I didn't know you could break into them in 10 seconds.. till that particular youtube video :) so one of these days I'll be updating to Schlage :) Kwikset's version of safety is just a joke! But hey good news it.. I can change my keys/re-code anytime I want too! :P

For dead bolts I agree. For residential locks never buy Kwikset anything. It's made as cheap as possible and Smart Key is very unreliable and insecure. Worse now there is a tool you can read the keying visibly then punch out a key(if you have that ability). I hate to say I am not a big fan of F series Schlage latchsets and locksets either. They need to do some design changes because they are easily bi-passed and forced open also. Schlage's higher end locks are stellar however. That said you will pay more for better security but how smart is it to defend everything you own with a thirty buck lock? Harden your house and send the ne'er do wells to that neighbor you don't like.

i see you sells schlage... really it is harder to pick than cilinders of two or more lines of pins??? Here in Mexico are very popular using keys with two combinations

i have a Much Better experience with Schlage than Kwikset's smartkeyed hardware bc i tried the rekeying process on a Kwikset smartkeyed lever, and the cylinder just decided to lock itself. i then had to take the cylinder apart, and reset the cylinder, and now it works. i Never had that problem with Schlage, since they design their cylinders to last a Long Time. 20.Sep.2020

I have had problems with Schlages where the knob is sticky when you turn too hard it will get stuck INSIDE, and when a coat or something is in the way it will basically jam. With Kwikset I’ve had the knob break but that’s because of the retracting pin, if i didn’t mess with it. It would’ve worked for years DUH. Older Kwiksets are ABSOLUTE JUNK New Kwikset and EVEN Schlage is MUCH BETTER than Older Kwiksets.

Maybe you haven't been a crime victim as much as me. I have some horrible karma. Frequently criminals don't want to leave break-in evidence. That's because the police won't even file a report unless there's forced entry. But thank you: I will now have BOTH!

Wayne Winton I've seen a lot of your videos and I like them buddy but this one kinda put me side ways. Schlages are ok they are fun to pick but the kwikset are just stupid. I have done so many things to them that they just open. A flat head screwdriver can open it. I would never tell anyone to put a lock like that anywhere near there home or store. I guess if they were paying me to lie to the people about it I guess I would tell them but other then that I would not do it.

I have a question.. today I'm buying a new door for my bedroom because the one I currently have is broken and doesn't have a door knob. My parents are very sketchy, they used pick my old lock and bust my door until it's open, that's why my door is broken now. today I'm finally going to buy a new door lock, what do you recommend?

If you just want to keep the Parents out,a Kwikset Smartkey will work really well as an Inside Lock!! Just be sure that when you install the Lock,be sure to put 3 to 4" Screws in the Latch Plate and the door should be Okay?? Make sure that your Hinges are on the Inside of your door,and Replace the Short Screws in the Hinges with 3 to 4" Screws in the Hinges too!!! T.Foy Owner-Operator Airborne Lock and Safe Co.

Really.. T-Pins and spooled drivers?.. I've never come across a Schlage that I couldn't open with the exception of their Primus series. To open them quickly I usually just snap gun them as it's quicker than hand picking their limited keyway.

Kwikset Cheap out of spec out of tolerance made in Mexico crap. It takes 15 minutes to rekey the lock. There is no paperwork or instructions in the box. The locks come not keyed to the keys they come with and. the only warranty is a tiny phone number on the back.

Wayne Winton Yeah so my last 4 videos on out of spec and 1 non functional quickset with glue in the knob from the factory on 1st. Someone bumped my door last week and cased my house. 1 Solution may be to use the bottom lock a quickset keyed to a schlage upper so that the same key opens locks but the lock pick is greeted by a series of resistant locks? Where on the box does it say the schlage lock is made?

my second and third quickset. locks are Fine, no one has been able.to get in. i just used these for.my deadbolt. thankfully someone bumped.my lock and cased my house and it was time for bump proof.locks. I had these for a year now. someone has tried bump the locks a few.times and gave up.
@MrJonrosas8178 жыл бұрын
websuspect try this out. I did and you will see what I mean. Get your self a flat head screwdriver and a set of pliers. Stick that flat head into the key hole and with the pliers turn the flat head. The plastic and the side bar will give way and your deadbolt will open. But anyways that really sucks to hear that your door got bumped. I hope it doesn't ever happen again.
