I understand Destiny's reasoning for not wanting to use the radical Islamic ideology in arguments. a lot of people just don't accept it as an argument. but merely being confused on whether Hamas are ideologically worse than nazis shows a deep misunderstanding of it. They're ideologically worse than the Nazis by every metric INCLUDING hatred for Jews. the only way they're preferable is their level of power.
@mowleed2000
@mowleed2000 26 күн бұрын
There’s one obvious difference I don’t see anyone mentioning which makes it feel very performative and just a way to demonise Hamas as much as possible The key difference is even the most pro Israel person would have to concede the people of have Palestine have legitimate gripes. From settlements to occupation. It’s a pretty understandable reality that there would be Palestinian militancy when we look at history it’s obvious there would be conflict. However only Neo Nazis argue that Germans had legitimate gripes with Jews. It is considered anti semitic and pro Nazi to say the Nazis had any point what so ever. The only way to argue Hamas is worse than Nazis is to argue that Nazis had legitimate concerns. Because without them having any legitimate concerns What we have is an irrational movement based purely on hatred and racism Vs a radical movement that does have legitimate gripes and it’s allure to the people of Palestine is understandable.

I think it does make sense for SH to make the comparison in the first place. They are as right-wing,fanatical and cruel as Nazis is what I think he is saying. It’s what I say anyway. But the Nazis couldn’t point to the Bible and say Jesus tells us to do this. @jeremyn4397
@jeremyn4397 15 күн бұрын
The problem with SH is this, I think it's a pretty confused POV to equate all Palestinian support as support for Hamas. Some few loud ppl will run cover for Hamas, sure, but when you ask most supporters of Palestinians if they support Hamas they will say no. This too is a bit confused since majority of Palestinians themselves support Hamas; however, as Kyle points out, what other realistic choice do they really have here? World governments and organizations like the UN support Palestinian rights to sovereignty but Israel does not (at least currently). I guess my point is that; any position you take on this is going to end up having you side with disgusting organizations to some degree, so maybe... we shouldn't pick sides and rather focus on forcing Israel and Palestinians to come to some kind of final solution. It's like having two siblings who wont stop fighting and the rest of the family is standing around picking sides rather than forcing them to hug and make up.

*Its pretty straight forward. Sam Harris is drawing attention to the fact that the outcomes of Nazi and Jihadist ideologies are extremely similar, down to the unique hatred of Jews, BUT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE WORTH MENTION THAT MAKES JIHADISTS UNIQUELY WORSE, as Nazism did not have an entire religious Supra-structure which dates back 1400 years that tells Nazis IF THEY DIE IN BATTLE AGAINST NON-NAZIS, THEY WILL GO TO THE BEST VERSION OF HEAVEN, and that in fact, dying for NAZISIM is the absolute best case scenarios outcome of their entire life. To where Nazis want to die more than their enemies want to live. Sam has talked about this at length, saying that the Cold War nuclear stand off would not be possible with Jihadists, since “mutually assured destruction” only works as a deterrent IF your enemy does not want to die. Islam teaches that death for islam is a way to skip judgment day and join the holiest figures in Islamic history in heaven, which is virtually empty because there have been so few people worthy of the Muslim heaven and everyone else who dies has to wait for judgment day. Nazism simply does not have any ideological mechanism like Jihad. Jihad is Nazism + dying is the best thing that can happen to you, which makes them a worse enemy to have on certain grounds.*

If Israel is killing Palestinian civilians, doesn't it sound like Harris is trying to run cover for those civilian deaths and make sure they continue? Doesn't it strike you as suspicious that Harris seemingly wants to make sure no one stops and asks themselves why anyone might be mad at Israel? In light of that, the points Kyle brought up - if true - seem like exactly what should be discussed in response to what Harris said.

There is so much wrong with what Kyle said, but in my opinion the worst thing he kept repeating was that the war on Gaza is collective punishment. I mean this is such a a weasely statement because when there is a a war it has always been true that the civilian population either had to leave their homes or got caught up in it somehow. This seems like such an intentionally manipulative statement at an emotional level. because were the allies "collectively punishing" all germans when they fought the nazis? What about any other war ever?
@mowleed2000

@@mowleed2000 I mean yes, it is technically true as I've said, but then are we to suggest that it should not be done in the face of a fundamentally irrational enemy? No clear line can be drawn here ever, because then you create an innate asymmetry where one side follows the law and the other does not. This is a general issue I have with purely idealistic people in that they simply do not understand the purpose behind or utility in a genuinely machiavellian approach.
@LonexX18
@LonexX18 25 күн бұрын
But just to be clear here, I don't agree with Sam Harris either that Hamas are worse than the Nazis. It's a nonsensical comparison and perhaps you could say their war tactics might be worse, but in terms of what world they are trying to create in the abstract I can imagine few possible realities that would have been worse for humanity as a whole than a Nazi victory, including a radically muslim world.
@LonexX18
@LonexX18 25 күн бұрын
The reason a nazi world would have been far worse is that they really embodied, what Nietzsche correctly identified as, moral aestheticism. And there are two things fundamentally wrong with that and yet it plagues right wing politics to this day. The first is that aesthetics are an inherently irrational way of judging people, they aren't totally irrelevant, but when applied to moral or ethics you are simply doing it wrong. And the second problem extends far beyond that, because aesthetic perfection can very easily be reached but lacks all depth and substance and then you are left with nowhere to go. It is uniquely uninspiring and pointless.

For example, if they wanted to win the war they would’ve acted differently and allocated more resources to the war instead of resources to the Holocaust. Let's see how well I know Sam Harris before listening. Haven't followed Harris for a few years, but having been a fan for a long time, here's why I think he thinks Hamas is worse than nazism. The nazis on the eastern front in 40-41 had huge morale issues at all levels of organization. Suicides, alcoholism, desertion, mental breakdowns. Often they let their local auxillaries do the murdering. They intellectualized it in a way where it was a zero sum game, so the untermenchen had to go. The slaughter was a necessary evil in their minds. The jews and communist partisans had wronged them, the disabled and the roma were a burden on their glorious race. They just had to go. However, it would have been difficult to see them sending letters home bragging about their actions. The jihadis, in contrast, were and are glorified for their actions. They'll brag about how many jews they kill. And they have a divine mandate to do it, no thinking required. They don't care if they die, either. Edit: Pretty close I think, with the difference that he called nazism non-rational and quasi-religious. But martyrdom seems to be the crux of it

@8:30 just sounds like Sam is just not looking at history. The Nazis may have not had a religion behind it but there was an idea that the 3rd reich would last 1000 years which is at least similar to some grandiose promise of paradise. Additionally there was key wartime infrastructure within city population (Dresden) and instances in which Hitler declared fortresses out of entire cities (Budapest). So the claims he's making about Hamas being worse than N*zis is on shaky ground.

for my understanding what Sam meant was that the nazi had a "pragmatic" and "cruel" approach while Hamas is just cruel and irrational. Like, 1000 year of reich is something you will want to experience with your kids, grandkids, etc. A wartime infrastructure is "pragmatic" during wartime, I am not saying it is inteligent or right, but they had a (wrong) objective and were trying to fulfill it in their life. Hamas would do the exactly same but they dont expect it to be enjoyed in this life but the next, be it their own or their kids, it doesnt matter if my family and all my descendants die, we will live in paradise. I am not even saying I think Hamas is worse but Sams point was this IMO

I agree with Destiny that hamas Charter does indeed seem to indicate a worldwide movement. In the same way, Hitlers Mein Kampf didn't say worldwide but eluded to expanding Germany to house its future population, which would need to grow in order to produce its long-lasting Reich. Does not say where. Just says expand. which, in fact, he attempted as we all know. I think anyone who wants to try and compare israel to Nazis should be required to read Mein Kampf. When you do, you'll realize how similar the Hamas charter is to this book. Just the bit about Jews being involved in planning world wide revolutions can be taken copy and pasted from Mein Kampf.

@awkwardturtle2842 yup. There is no genocide in gaza. It's like saying a rapist is equivalent to their rape victim. Were the Germans being genocided in WW2? Was the war on ISIS a genocide? Civilian deaths in an asymmetrical WAR isn't genocide. The Holocaust was a genocide done by people like Kyle.
