It's true. It was great hearing Kyle talk about them. I think with fighting games all the news outlets and content creators for them are pretty established and people generally know where to go if they want the media for it. Same for racing games. Which is why I think they don't get talked about, they also, aren't casual. MK is trying to change that, which is great.
@mr.awesome6011
@mr.awesome6011 Жыл бұрын
Because of lack of single player/casual content, the fact that you get your shit kicked in online if you don't play constantly, and that outside of Smash Bros. (It's a real fighting game deal with it) half of the game's content is released in $20 to $30 season intervals, turning a $60 game into a $200 game. And that's not counting outside season content like the pricey TMNT skins for SF6.

@@andrebaptista8284 How exactly is MK in particular trying to change that? It seems like it's doing pretty much the same old thing it always does. SF6 and Guilty Gear Strive are the only ones that seem to be going out of their way to expand the audience of fighting games, but that's with gameplay, what bearing does that have to do with the media? The media is gonna do what the media does, no game design decision is gonna change how they operate

Kyle, you spelled Agumon wrong in the first picture. And it’s funny ‘cause Agumon has never been my favorite starter really but his evolutions are the best. As for the fighters, I can’t see anything surpassing them and Smash and I think they’re only going to get better. I still think there’s plenty of room for cool designs though. Rashid from SF V is a nice example of a newer one. Also, shout out to Bloody Roar. That’s always been 1 of my fave fighters. Maybe someday we might even get a decent MvC entry again.

@@Gentle_Troll I mean Tekken 5-7 all shared the same base movesets and animations for returning characters, and its kinda expected atp. T8's the first complete shake up for the series in like, 20 years SF and MK on the other hand are more known for RADICALLY changing things up each game, so characters are more tailor made for specific universal systems. Just naturally becomes harder to adapt over time in some cases
@goranisacson2502
@goranisacson2502 Жыл бұрын
True, but also true as Thomas Rozhon says that Tekken does things differently ankmationwise than the other ones so it's easier for them to keep and make large rosters. I do wonder however- do characters simply sticking around help keep them in the AUDIENCE'S mind? Does it make them popular? Because it still feels like the Mishima's, the Williams sisters and like Yoshimitsu and Eddy Gordo are all that everybody knows Tekken for. It's once again Agumon syndrome, where I feel like very few characters post the first ones are actually well-loved.

You touch on two important things here. Big budget games are ballooning to levels in which competition from other games is extremely hard, and fighting games are inherently competitive. Since becoming good enough to compete in any one game takes a large commitment, people gravitate toward games that seem 'relevant' which is why even stuff like Guilty Gear with it's great popularity doesn't come close to the big three.

Mortal Kombat franchise really can't get past the legacy characters. You're right, they have tried. The majority of the legacy street fighter cast came from Street Fighter II, as Street Fighter 1 was mostly forgotten by the time the sequel released in arcades. Only Ken and Ryu came from SF1. Street Fighter Alpha series did make an attempt to expand the roster and did bring in some new memorable characters. SNK was one of the few fighting game developers who could successfully introduce new characters into the KOF roster that could supersede older characters.

Kinda surpised at the dysmissal of Project L. I can understand it because after 30 years of the same 3 sagas dominating it seems absurd, but I'm betting that its gonna be the biggest one by EVO 2025. Riot is an expert in copying a game genre and perfecting it in a more player-friendly way, wether it is by the way of monetizing it, by making the genre easier to start in or by making it more "social" (like the duos in Project L) I think the only game of theirs that isn't top 2 most played in their genre is their card game, and that one makes sense given the investment needed to make the jump from one game to another. All of this by following the same template of "easy to learn, hard to master" that all their games follow where you never feel that their games are dumbed down so more people can play them. if anything, their competitive games are pretty hardcore (LoL and Valorant) I think the question is how big will the difference be between Project L and the rest as the years go on, not if it's gonna be the biggest one, especially if riot offers a more "Professional" competitive circuit in which case a lot of players from other games will most likely make the jump.

I mean, I feel like Guilty Gear kind of invalidates all of this? Guilty Gear still isn't Street Fighter but it was sitting in slot 2 this EVO. They just announced 2.5 million players. Every new character that gets added to Guilty Gear is someone's favorite character in the entire franchise and fans beg for them to come back for generations to come (yes even Kum Haeyoun).
