I can't speak for anybody else, but Princess Peach: Showtime doesn't rank on my internal significance list. I've been into stuff for age brackets much lower than mine, and Showtime's minigame collection don't step to 'em. Now, that one Winnie the Pooh action-adventure for sixth-gen consoles, that game'a kinda' schnice. Ya' gotta' run from the Heffalumps and Woozles, and yell at the evil tree to back that bark up. ...Kirby's Epic Yarn would've been a better example, huh.

Conceptually, this also plays into the idea of cultural hegemony, with relatively small economies like South Korea, and even Japan, having an outsized cultural influence relative to their economic output both regionally and internationally within specific spheres, such as Japan in gaming and animation, South Korea in music, and in all those spheres much more than the factually much larger Chinese economy. i.e. popularity (size) ~= influence

Max said it the best - FF7 Rebirth isn’t innovative in any way, it’s a culmination of the best parts of open world game design. It samples what works and puts it all together in one package. The significance comes from the trilogy itself as opposed to any individual game. I think many people will look back at this when it’s all said and done and think “wow, I had a decade long experience with this story” and that’s when it’ll feel significant to that individual.

That 2015 article from that Independent is a bit small in scope when it says that a movie is held up in popularity by how it gets referenced in other movies. Flash forward almost a decade later, and I think web content is what keeps an old movie popular. Recently, there was a Trailer for Beetlejuice X2. A sequel for a movie from 1988. The trailer for this sequel opens with the song Day-O. The most viewed clip from the original Beetlejuice movie was the 'Day-O' dance scene. 55million total views. Which makes me think that the marketers of the sequel are really going by that bit of nostalgia from the OG movie. Based on the YT view count. I also made sure not to type Beetlejuice's name three times. You know...

@@user-hq6kn5vp2q I'm not really surprised. I feel like the excitement for movies have been dwindling over the last 5 years. To the point where games in general get more views for trailers. I feel like that Robocop game has done more to reignite interests in the old movies than that last reboot did. But I do not think that the movie industry will die out. I think it will have some form of resurgence.

Remake part 3 is going to have a fully flyable airship. Its going to have a fully controllable submarine. Its going to have a snowboarding game. I kinda think we will be getting new continents that weren't in the OG too. Massive Wutai glow up for one, but I think there will be a lot more. I think we're all collectively waiting on the whole thing to be out before passing final judgement. I'm towards the end of rebirth and if they can keep this high bar going, the game will be very fondly remembered. I think the legacy will top the OG, which is probably the only bar that matters.

On the one hand, I doubt Monopoly Go will have any scene as memorable as... nearly ANYTHING in FF7 Rebirth, but it is a 70 buck game for a 500 buck console. I think that people willing to pour money into gaming will love and cherish it, but compared to the far grander scale of the audience who plays free to play games... there's no contest who makes the most profit. But as far as what will make the strongest memories of today, I think it'll have to be one of the free to plays. I feel like even for the new generation of nerds who are into story and non-western aesthetics, Mihoyo and Genshin Impact and all their other games will be what Final Fantasy were to us, due to it's spread and accessability.

Monopoly Go player here. I can't really speak to the attractiveness of it or whether it will be forgotten in a year, but given that it's a Monopoly game on mobile that doesn't require me to pay for dice (the primary source of microtransactions in Monopoly Go and they do upsell you pretty hard) or pay to play the game (Marmalade's Monopoly game costs $35 to own all the boards plus the cost to buy the game), I can live with the constant upsells.

I guess Monopoly Go is one of the (if not the) most recognisable board games, anyone on a commute or just sitting there bored who wanders onto the app store will likely pick it as they know what the game is already, even if they're not into games generally, and there are probably many millions of people who do that. It's just one of those long running culturally engrained family games that you'd play with your grandparents on a Sunday. Similar to Scrabble or Box Peek.

For me, this kind of ranking of significance really comes to a head when people are talking about eras of music. It's easy to think the 80s or 90s had better music than today when you weren't alive in those decades and didn't have to listen to the vast majority of crap that got popular. Time has shaven most of those off and now we're left with a bunch of classics that are generally agreed to be good. Saying 80s music was categorically better than 2020s music is like comparing two sports teams, but for one of them you only include their winning seasons in the calculation.
