Kyosho Scorpion Speed Test - Tamiya Torque Tuned Motor - It's Faster Than You Might Think!

Hello and welcome to this Speed Test of my new Kyosho Scorpion Re-release 1/10 RC Buggy. The Scorpion is totally stock. The kit doesn't come with an ESC or motor, so I fitted a spare Tamiya Torque Tuned brushed motor and Tamiya TBLE-02s Electronic Speed Controller (ESC).
My similar Tamiya buggies fitted with the same ESC & motor combination only managed about 18mph. I'm not giving anything away, but I was astounded by how much faster the Kyosho is!!! It may have higher gearing, but somehow it also retains excellent acceleration, too!
I hope you stick around for the fun run at the end where I also track the buggy closely so you can hear the awesome sound the car makes.
As ever, a massive shout out to Rob Brennan RC for filming the test.
Thanks for watching!
About the 2014 Kyosho Scorpion:
Following the original design, the Scorpion 2014 features a new two-piece die-cast aluminum gearbox with differential gears. In addition, the included slipper clutch protects the transmission as well as delivers efficient traction that takes the Scorpion’s control feel and durability to a new higher level. Precision 48 pitch gears reduce traction pulsation for direct driving control characteristics while the flat under surface of the countersunk chassis has no protruding screw heads for minimal contact resistance and scraping, resulting in higher durability. Stainless shafts combine with aluminum cylinders in the oil shocks for smooth stroke from top to bottom and running performance worthy of a true racing buggy.
Like the original Scorpion, the 2014 version is packaged as an unassembled kit, but nearly all tapping screws and nuts have been replaced with the improved lightweight and security a hex screws.

Thats a well made brushed motor. A lot of brushed motors you find in rc cars are rubbish, finding a good brushed motor can make a big difference in performance.

Yes, I agree, the Torque Tuned is my go-to budget motor, always perform well and a good step up from a stock silver can for a decent price. Definitely recommended by me! Thanks for the comment and all the best.

Cool Mark. There's a reason why Kyosho won the world championship back in those days with this car. The Kyoshos are such unbelieveble fast cars, just out of the box. Thanks for testing and proofing👍

Hi dirk and thanks for the cool comment! Oh yes, I can see why Kyosho won the world championship, this buggy is just awesome even with that cheap Tamiya motor fitted. I'm happy with the speed as it is so we'll just leave it alone and have fun with it. Thanks for watching my friend! 😎👍

Phew ! Thank god you didn't roll this piece of beauty. My guess of 20mph was miles out, but I guess I was basing that on the Torque Tuned motor. As you mentioned in the video mate, it had to be the gearing that was producing the extra speed. Torque Tuned motors can't reach 25mph. It's the same with my XR311 with it's silver can. It can definitely outpace Hornets, Lunchboxes and some other basic Tamiya's and I put that down to the gearing. Yes, what a beautiful sound this makes on tarmac. Awesome. Shout out to camera man Rob...👍🏻. Enjoy the rest of the weekend pal...👍🏻🙂👍🏻🙂.

Hello and good evening my friend! Oh yes I'm so glad I didn't roll this one on tarmac, that wouldn't have gone well! Yes I think it was the gearing that made the difference but it's still strange that the acceleration was so strong. My other buggies with the same motor only managed about 18 mph! My racing fighter with with a 13 turn brushless motor only managed 23 mph. I can't get my head around it! Anyway all good because this thing is definitely fast enough for me as it is! Thanks for the great comments as always and as ever wishing you a great weekend. Cheers! 🤝🙏👍😎

@@MarkBryanRC Don't forget, even though we're keeping our "home" in Petrol and desperately saving up for Security Deposit and moving expenses.... We're not paying Rent! As long as it's less than about $20 to ship, you're getting one. 😊👌 Raymond isn't a RC Guy, but is a precision Machinist..... He saw on the A5 part I sent him, and copy of the Manual, that Screw Pins fit the Arms. So he put M3 x 50 threads in those Pin Holes. He also went on Evilbay, and looked at a Hot Racing A5, for ideas. .... He decided that the HR part looked "too clunky", and should be smoother looking. (Like me, an OCD perfectionist!) 😜 The material looks thick enough that in your case, you might be able to use the same Pins you've got, without the Spacers.... I'm giving you the opportunity to make another interesting Video, plus I need to see how you'd sort it. I asked him if I could get them anodised Blue... I won't tell you his answer, but it was a bit vulgar!! 😅🤣 So they will be bare, but Clearcoated with Epoxy Paint. I think you'll like it. He is as good a Machinist as he is a Guitarist!! Cheers me Midlands Brother!🍻

Forget about all that nostalgia bullshit, that time is gone and never coming back, get over it and move on, you dont drive a Cortina anymore so stop playing with the Hornet and frog, if you can't move on you might need to talk to someone about it, I have a friend who suffers with the same shit, he still wears the shoes from from 1983 and thinks its cool. My scorpion has the tamiya sport tuned motor...it's a perfect fit for this car. Out of curiosity, does your scorpion make 'clicking' noises while turning on pavement? I cant find any issues, thinking its maybe front wheels sliding in turns? I really hope it isn't a problem with diff.
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC Жыл бұрын
Yes I would imaging the Sport Tuned would suit this buggy, it's just that I had the Torque Tuned as a spare! No, I have not had any clicking sounds when turning, or at any other time. I don't think wheels sliding would make a click. I would look at the dog bones and drive cups. Fingers crossed!

Which gear ratio did you use? I have a Kyosho beetle re-re and I run 21t brushed motor with the smaller pinion, and found the motor to run hot.
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC Жыл бұрын
Not sure of the ratio off the top of my head, I just used the standard setting as in the manual. I have fitted a heatsink but don't have any overheating issues! The Torque Tuned motor is 25T. 👍

One day I will hopefully get one of these or a beetle. Certainly looks sweet pretty nippy. I wonder if putting a tamiya sport tuned motor in would give it a boost 🤔. My blitzer project idea on hold as I now have an original Wild One 😜. A little tatty but will come up OK 👍. Need a wild one manual 😉

Hi David, yes I totally recommend these buggies or the Beetle on the same chassis. A sport Tuned should add a couple mph more! Cool you got a Wild One. If you watch my Wild One build videos, you can clearly see all steps of the build manual on screen!!! Might help a little! Have a great weekend! :)
