Waaaaaay too long and overdone, and the resulting information is stuff anyone could figure out by just playing the game and seeing what works. The fastest swamp raid method is to take some wood for a workbench and bed and a few stones for a fire and reposess abandoned structures just outside the border then set up a portal inside. The safest way in and out from there is always made with a hoe. The flimsier and poisonous swamp enemies are much easier to handle with an upgraded sledge-type weapon, namely the Stagbreaker if you don't have iron yet, since it is the only weapon that deals AoE damage and can knock back multiple nearby enemies while safely vaporizing blobs and skeletons. When you raid a crypt it's easier if you set up a chest in front to hold excess iron, and you can build a fire inside the entrance to quickly restore health if things get dangerous. It's more efficient to enter the crypt closer to night time so you can spend the night raiding and have plenty of daylight to get out and trasport iron afterwards. If you have the crypt location marked and have a clear path from a safe bed/portal at the swamp edge, you can run back naked on an empty stomach with little difficulty after dying inside the crypt, where an empty bag also allows for the massively helpful Corpse Run buff for when you have to reclaim your inventory near enemies. Essentially you missed a _lot_ more of the important points than you covered, as most of what you mentioned can easily be learned from the initial trip or two into a swamp and doesn't really help that much in practice, much less reassure a player that they can explore "safely". A better title would be "very basic intro to the Swamp for people who are still scared to go into it."

When first entering a crypt, drop down a Campfire at the entrance and rest a moment to remove the 'Wet' debuff. While mining in the crypt, return to the campfire whenever you need to reset your 'Rested' buff. Being Rested and not Wet really helps with your stamina when mining

One thing that I learned today. Drinking Poison resistance mead AFTER getting poisoned doesn't remove or limit the damage. You gotta take it before you get hit.

you can also log out the poison debuff disappears. Another thing I do sometimes is create a new world where I'm at home, if I'm low I logout and switch worlds to recover then switch back.

I just had my first swamp yesterday: 8 draugr, 7 leaches, 2 slimes, 6 skeletons, a pack of 5 grey dwarfs and a troll. All within 10 minutes

When u drink anti poison mixture there are around 60% less swarms in water. I thinki it is less, I once didnt see single one. It is also important to get health potion to heal faster when u need to run a bit and good food like roasted fish, sausages. Meet gives a lot of health.

I thought I was prepared. I got to shore after a 20 minute sail, got inmediatley killed by 2 draugr. All my stuff, inclusief boat with portal equipment still at the swamp shore. My avatar building a boat in his underwear and started sailing again. On the way across the ocean I heard something wich reminded me of my first encounter with a Leviathan in Subnautica....a Sea Serpent. I got to escape with the wind in my sail to find my stuff on land. After equiping it I took my other boat to a small island and fought of 4 draugr, 9 leeches and 1 blob. After that I could finally set up a portal.

I always have my karve stocked with 10 greydwarf eyes, two cores and 20 fine wood for the portal and a full stack of wood to start a forward base as soon as I land

My method of starting out in the swamp was a little different - first swamp I found was tiny and had no crypts I could find, so I sailed around until I found a big one. Massive black forest all around it, with loads of trolls and greydwarf nests, didn't like my chances of setting up a base tbere so I found a little patch of meadow to set up a portal in, and started digging a trench through the black forest, deep and narrow enough that nothing could get to me. Dug out an area just before the swamp, surrounded it with land walls and built a little hut in the pit for another portal. Took forever, but the feeling of tunneling into the swamp biome safe and unnoticed was excellent. Still not sure if this was a genius plan or the harebrained scheme of a stubborn half-wit with terrible combat skills.

Another tip for anyone exploring the swamp, particularly if you come across the crypts. Setup a campfire right at the entrance (inside) of the crypt, it gives you a comfort 3 rest point where you may rebuff once rested expires. The crypts can be helpful quick shelters.

Standard use of the 4 cargo slots in the Karve when exploring: 50 wood and enough materials to build at least 1 portal. Make sure you have an unused portal with a name you remember at home ready to go.

TL:DL 1. Prep with your best gear and food. Make a portal. 2. Make sure you use a bow (pretty much the entire game, as kiting mobs is always less dangerous that fighting them with melee.) 3. Profit.

Take stag hammer or iron sledge nearly everything in swamp is weak to it and the knockback can save you sometimes. Also using the hoe to create paths to your base from crypts will help with iron runs and using the cart.

Thanks for this. Just defeated the Elder and looking to venture into the swamp. Glad to see I'm not actually underequipped, still rocking level 3 troll armor and with level 3 bronze weapons. I also strongly recommend Carrot Soup. Carrots are easy to farm and their soup is one of the longest-lasting and potent foods in the game.

My friend started another world and he ended up being on a huge island with swamps and plains all on the same island. So that really just depends on your seed

Second run through on the game and as soon as I had found a swamp I got a fully setup base going; house, smelter, perimeter wall, the works... explored the swamp and it turned out to be a thin strip that ran down my entire first continent with zero points of interest, no keyed dungeon to collect iron from, nada. 16:06 Dragurs can also spawn as elite Dragurs, if you see a elite dragurs with 2 star, just run and range it down, it deal tons of dmg and i bet you will take dmg from them even if you block the dmg. Dragurs can also spawn from some body piles (most of the time there are 2 of those pile and 1 skelet pile at 1 spot), if you can, leave it for later (mark it) this will be your "go to" spot to farm those food stuff from them. 18:26 Look behind Kysen, you see those green blobs in the tree?, those are used to craft the best range weapon in the game (after you have found your first silver from a mountain (frost place), but, can only be found once you have killed boss nr 3, anyway, to get the blob down, you can either hit it with a range attack (think the arrow have to deal elemental dmg, not sure, you cant with the normal arrow at least). If the arrow thing doesn't work (i only heard it from someone else) you have to build a workbench at the lower part, then build a staircase up to them, then hit them with a weapon like a axe or so, after 2-3 hit they exploid and you can then loot the guth or whatever its called and safe it for later (the bow). 14:15 A small tip if people really wanna do the crypt before Kysen make the clip, once you mine those piles, leave a little room before you remove it all, if you see enemies behind it, attack them from range with your bow, the mobs cant get to you if the door is still sealed for them, they have to be able to move to get to you, so, deal with the blobs before destroying it all. The crypts also have a chance to give you the location of boss nr 3.

Me and the wife have been playing for 30 hours, we've finally found a swamp biome, we have both got level 3 bronze armour and weapons + all the best food for our level and the swamp is still a challenge! so be carful! we haven't died yet but playing this SOLO would be insane!

Yeah I’m playing it solo and just got into the swamps. Noticeable difficulty step up. I have to take it VERY slow, esp due to leeches. I have lvl 3 bronze armor + weaps. Food is Meat+Tails+(Honey or carrot soup). I engage with bow from distance (I have lvl 50 bows, flint arrows) no real trouble with most mobs, kite if you pull groups, DO NOT wait and get surrounded. Just make sure your retreat is clear. Hand to hand sometimes with Draugr and skels, parrying with shield and mace them down, Draugr are similar in str to Greydwarf Brutes (big ones w red eyes) but attack faster. Biggest issue is leeches for me, hard to see, and the poison HURTS man. Haven’t hit a wraith yet, plan is run my ass off lol.

@@LuckySage It was hard for me to find too. You have to sail pretty damn far out, farther than I expected. The key is, swamp biomes start showing up at a specific radius away from the center of the map. So find an island where the shoreline moves away from map center, keep going until you see the creepy, creepy trees. Dealing with wind direction changes, storms, fog, etc makes it all the harder.

You can jump on-top of crypt and place work bench + chest and portal . This gives you safety of not being caught outside at night in swamp which is dangerous. Also bring a Hoe to flatten land and get rid of water so leeches don’t get you. You can dig out fire 🔥 area so the mobs that spawn blow up

Also, it's best to use the right weapon on a mob. For instance, the skellys, blobs and I believe leeches are weakest to blunt force weapons, so I always use the mace on them, but switch to axe for drauger. The drauger actually has flesh to slice, while the blob it will just go through like jello. The skellys are just bones so piercing (arrows, spear) and axe don't work as well. I'm constantly switching weapons depending on the mob.

My first tactic was to built an outpost in a meadow far enough for swamp mobs to leave me alone, i actually got close enough for graydwarf to fight the swamp mobs and i get a lot of free loot. Make sure to build a dock and a lot of of chests to store iron. Also make sure to build the outpost on the closes side to the cryps.

In both my playtroughs I'm starving for iron, all the swamps are tiny and it takes ages to find a decent swamp. In my current playtrough I finally found one after I'm already settled in plains etc. Probably the best moment in the game when I got there and saw 10+ crypts. Devs really need to get rid of small swamp biomes with 0-2 crypts, bad worldgen design. Waste of time.

I will say this, I set my swamp base up next to a plains and pulled the mobs from the plains into the swamp to farm the larger mobs and it honestly worked quite well. It was difficult to get it started but its satisfying lol

I was in a total state of panic when I was trying to travel to the swap lands yesterday. I made it on my first trip, but I was attacked by the serpent who almost took down my ship, yet I ALMOST killed her thanks to my Finewood bow level 3 bow and stamina regen potion with level 3 bronze axe, she ended up running off. It was terrifying because not only was I fighting her but the bloody sea as well! She was pissed! And the waves were smashing the boat so hard it was almost turning the ship anywhere from 40 to 80 degrees each time because I had no control of the rudder at the time. It was one of the craziest exciting times I have ever experienced in a game since about 98' when I played Vigilante 8 with my cousin. Bloody top game!

Oh, I also made it to the Island in one trip, my piece of advice is to stay on the main island for as long as possible and collect as many ore resources as you can. Stock up on your ore, get some beehives and get things going. You want to at least be prepped with good bronze armour or upgraded troll armour (stealth, if that's your thing) and potions. You don't need many potions to go out, I didn't even take any health potions with me, just 2 stamina and I only used 1. But I stocked up on 12 of each potion and carrot stew and Royal Jam before I made any moves off the island. Also, take Wood and rock in your hull with some stock to make a small camp as soon as you get off the boat. You want to immediately start once you get your Tool table set up with your portal to defend it all. I mean as soon as I jumped off my boat I was attacked by Leech's right away that started to hit my boat! The Swamp is no joke.

That's a good tip to find the edge of the swamps and build in either a black forest or meadows adjacent to it. I plan on bringing enough to build a portal and lean to and then I will set up an ironworks there as I get more of the resources I need. Hopefully I can find a swamp soon. I was given some iron gear by people I plan on playing with who have put in more time than me. I need to upgrade it all the way and get to work on crafting a porcupine.

A little tidbit for food early on: if you find the trader, get the fishing rod and a lot of fish bait as soon as you can. Cooked fish is much better than neck tails, and you'll need those uncooked neck tails for poison resist mead for the Swamp biome as well.

Be careful not to set up your base in the plains (under armor50-60) like i did... the plains shore looks very similar to meadows.... Bronze-armor is a waste of resouces and time. Look for turnip seeds in the swamp asap and start growing turnip,it takes a few days until you made enough seeds,but the turnip stew is worth it Sausage,Turnip stew and carrot soup are three foods you want have in your backpack while running through the swamp make potions asap (stamina,health and anti-poison) the anti-poison buff last 10 min,when active the poisoning of the leeches and blobs are nearly harmless take material for a campfire with you and set one up inside the crypt at the exit Don´t waste a slot for an torch if you carry firearrows with you,fire arrows are very good for enlighten the crypt and also for make some light farther away that is all i have to say about the swamp :) (maybe one more... the way to get ironscrap is painful and pleases me not xD )

One addendum I would suggest: Where's the Fire? AKA conserve your stamina. The amount of times I've been eaten by Draugr/Skellys/Oozes because I didn't have the stamina to even fight properly, let alone run away...

@@tarika1727 For the work you put in, Iron is the way to go imho, plus Iron is used to upgrade Padded armour (currently the top armour in game) and you can pull 2-3 stacks of scrap iron out of a crypt if you're thorough/lucky

@@tarika1727 i´ve crafted the whole set,i don´t wear it in the swamp because of the sneaky bonus the troll-set gave me and the troll-armor got more armor-points if you did all upgrades. no need to say where i went after i got the wishbone... i only can say i wasted a lot of copper and tin aaand iron as well... because i also crafted the iron amor (at least i was wearing the iron armor for 5-6 days :D ) after all i only can say the troll is your best friend until you meet the wolves ;)

Bronze armor level 3 is the same as Iron armor level 1. It is only until the iron armor is level 2 the stats increase. So bronze armor is pretty good at level 3. Also get a Fermenter to brew potions. Make poison resist potions incase you get poisoned. Another tip about the crypts is if you use Stagbreaker the AOE splash goes through walls, so you can safely kill enemies behind the muddy scrap piles.

That 2 handed bronze polearm is actually insanely good. Middle mouse button spins and stuns all enemies allowing you to crit on all them. Problem is it takes a lot of stamina so you need a decent retreat path.

poison resist mead, some health buffs, good armor (i prefear mobility so troll armor) , some parry-able shield and mace. and some axe if abomination spawns (tree moster) , but from 2 abomination drops you can make part of root set, i recomend helmet first cause it gets 50% poison resistance while wearing, so quite often diference between life and death when meleing blobs, oozers, and leeches and no longer need to rely on poison resist mead

Well I only just started this game a month ago. And there is a Swiss army knife here: use local storage and not cloud storage, backup your character(s) and world(s) - assuming you are playing solo and not on a server - and if something goes south, restore said backup. Less work on retrieving your tombstone. Less stress. And when I say "git" good I literally mean use Git as in the SCM tool. Best of luck to ya's all!

My first swamp experience was yesterday when I found a draugr spawner that spawned a one-star archer draugr that almost killed me, so I ran tf out of the swamp and not sure if I'm gonna go back.

I just had a little rage quite trying to handle the swamp. I thought I was pretty tough shit. Bronze axe, shield and armor at lvl 2. Swamp does not give a single flying bird! Tried to run away, ran into the plains, got killed by a big flying bug as I ran off whimpering. Basically, a lot of death. Worse one, was dying to poison after kill a few enemys, just stood there, by myself, watching my health tic down, helplessly. Sorry Odin you wisdom seeking freak, you should have send a better man then I. Might try the troll armor strat, as I am desperately looking for iron. Also, if you do run away from the mobs, try not to run into a bigger group of them, tis not fun.... Very painful. Ah, this meaningless rant helped my frustration.

Posion resistance is simply a most. I play with a mate which of course makes it so much easier! Yeah the game sure gets harder when you go from black forest to swamp:D

Yep. Get poison resist potions and ferment them. I always carry a stack of 5 on me every time I go, and take the swamps slower until you've increased your iron armor a couple of times. I don't even use a mace but it's super helpful in the swamp. Made a level 3 bronze and it works okay until I can get an iron one.

Still haven’t found a crypt, but the best in the game so far was kiting an abomination to a troll in the nearby Black Forest, I just sat back and enjoyed an epic fight. FYI….. the troll won😀

I need to find a better location to hit the swamp from. Found one with a nice meadow to build my base north of it. Seemed like a good plan but the entry into the swamp is connected by a small water way and the swamp is fairly narrow where I'm entering. There is a small horde of skeletons that spawn with Duergar. There's also an abomination. I have to fight tooth and nail to get to the nearest crypt and the next closest is twice the distance. Thinking I'm going to call this spot a bust and find another location.

if you upgrade troll armor rank 2 troll armor is equivlent stats but no movment penalty to bronze armor plus more stealthy

I've put some hours into this game.... portals are everything. Setting up efficient bases and investing in multiple crafting/forge utilities is EVERYTHING. It may seem grindy, but trust me you will speed up on progression if you invest some time into effective small FOB's near high resource places with portals. Obv metals can't be tellied, which is why you build up around the rss. I can't express how much time I save when I do this versus, try to ferry or hand cart your rss back to a main base; time lost, risk for loss of life and loss of loot is increased by more than you think (this game is glitchy to boot, I lost a 30 stack of silver ore trying to indian run back to a base because of the weight). I shall reiterate; FOBs, portals, workstations are worth the investment. (Later on in game as well if you die or lose things, whatever happens to set you hard back you will be so happy for the ability to get any rss (ReSourceS) you need to build back up, or if you suddenly discover something you want to focus on that is new, you'll be more available to rss farm for it altogether.) Thanks for this guide i'm scared of going there solo haha. I built a portal hub base on my server yesterday in a small black forest beach strip between a giant swamp and a giant plain lol. Should I avoid the plains until the swamp is dealt with? Also I'm a bit confused about the boss, is he inside crypts or are crypts just a place to explore and mine iron like burial chambers earlier?

Avoid the plains for now. Plains is the 5th and final biome. Swamps is the 3rd. When you kill the black forest boss (elder), he will drop a swamp key. This will allow you to enter the sunken crypts in the swamp. Inside the crypts, you may find a stone with red text that will mark on your map where the swamp boss. The swamp boss alter will be outside of the crypts in the swamp biome. His alter is a giant skull with acid in the mouth. You have to offer 10 withered bones to summon the boss. Withered bones are easily found in the sunken crypts. Make sure you have poison resistance potions before doing all of this. Good luck.

I disagree on how to handle the slimes. They resist piercing attacks, but are VERY weak to blunt damage. So just kite them till they jump, then as they land, go for the kill with a mace. It'll take you no more then two hits. Even the bigger oozes that spawn slimes on death. Those newer slimes will not spread poison the moment they spawn. Time it right and you'll never get poisoned.

Man swamp is the only place I've died so far. I was being so careful but it got me feeling comfortable so when I saw an enemy spawner I took out the Draugrs with the bow and went in to destroy the thing but was quickly surrounded. It was still going fine 'til a 2 star Draugr archer merked my ass. Almost died in the plains too, those mosquitos hit freaking hard and they're surprisingly sneaky. Thankfully I've avoided the big creatures there... I don't want to see what they do lol.

You can use the stagbreaker very good against these blobs due to their weakness against blunt dmg. And the stagbreaker also has a insane range so i think its the best weapon that you can get at the point you enter the swamp.

Archers are a pain, even against a bronze shield. The bone shield is better but has a big movement penalty.

Very important: be proactive with poison resist mead. It's effect wont save you, if you're already poisoned.

i have alot of hours in this,, still haven found the swamp boss. not for trying. but i did find a second elder, which i didn't expect. still wandering the water ways to find the more swamps. sea snake if the wind is in your favour, set sail full and out run it. otherwise head for land and hope for the best, but if you know where they are located, sail further out around that area i found useful.

When I go to the swamp I get swarmed by 2 slimes and 2 star skeletons and the abomination from across the swamp and does 50 damage while I'm shielding with a level 3 bronze buckler.

actually every boss has more then one spawn on your world, sometimes the elder shown on map ist not the actual closest.

I got swamp and fields on my main island. so "needing" to venture out to the sea, is bollox. you don't "find" an area, you run around and stumple upon it.

I always build my portals in the swamps on top of dungeons since the mobs can't get to you there. I put the workbench down and jump on it to get to the top of the dungeon.

You should actually take the hoe when you explore the swamp. You can raise and level ground that is otherwise going to be in the water and it helps you get around to tricky areas and avoid Leeches.

My brother and I decided to sail to the swamp in pursuit of the elder. When we arrived on shore we were immediately attacked by 5 leeches, a draugr, and 2 skeletons and needless to say we died haha. Next time we will definitely land somewhere with a meadow or Black Forest next to the swamp like you say

FYI if you’re looking for the elder you want black forests not swamps. I believe you can mark its spawn point by finding a rune in an ancient tomb.

You just need fine wood for the finewood bow... you CAN cheese up birch trees (they drop fine wood) by chopping other tress down then pushing the logs into birches, then pushing birch logs until they break into other trees. Otherwise you need bronze axes to cut the birch trees

ALWAYS explore by ship naked. It seems like ALL the swamps I have found are small with no crypts. I only found one that is about 2 full days sail away which is very annoying.
