I thought Stanley got his nickname in the book in reference to his size and being seen as clueless. He was overweight at the beginning. (Shia apparently tried to put on weight for the role but the author talked him out of it.)

They made the scene where Exray gave him his name a lot less impactful IMO. In the book they very thoroughly establish that Exray has this senior entitlement thing that Stanley keeps tripping over, but the last thing with the free day off he actually confides in Stanley about his near blindedness, accepting him as a member of the clan. Stanley doesn't understand any of these social cues and feels isolated, so when he sits on that guy he's all apologetic and Exray gives him his name to let him know that he's part of the group now.

Considering the author was the writer he probably wanted to improve some of the stuff from his book

Holes isn't entirely original, though. It shares a lot of similarities to The Shawshank Redemption. A white guy who was wrongly convicted of a crime he didn't commit, meets a black guy who has trouble fitting in with everyone else, as well as a few others, and realizes that the warden was using the money for their own personal gain, manages to swipe the money, which turns out to be rightfully his, and wins his freedom after proven innocent, symbolized by rain coming down from the sky. But, Holes has a lot of things that makes it unique. Since we learn about why Camp Greenlake was cursed, due to a lynching by the Walkers, and we also learn about the Yelnats Family curse as well, as a man didn't carry a crazy old lady, who happens to be related to one of Stanley's friends, over that hill.

Nothing is really original these days. There's only so many ways to tell a story, but what you can do different makes it unique.

If it's either original or a rip off I'd say original.... there's more differences than similarities. You can say all prison movies are rip offs of each other cause there all similar. Gangster movies, war movies, fighting movies etc each are rip offs if you look at them in that light.

Does it ever say why Kate Barlow became a criminal? I mean, I would think she would just go and take revenge on the people responsible with sam’s death, but why did she decide to start robbing banks too?

I knew all of this well not all in the book because in my class my teacher is reading us the book Holes we all love the book!!!!!!! Before Christmas break we are going to watch the movie Holes I’m so excited we’ll we are all so excited!!!! , I hope everyone is having a good day/afternoon/morning/night / my class is getting a new student her name is Kendra she actually has a brother in the same class, well not a brother brother she was in foster care and there keeping Kendra for now we don’t know if there keeping her forever (ik/I know I didn’t have to tell you guys that but yea!) and a few more things I know(ik) people/ppl looses family members /everyone dose tho/ they are always looking down on you smiling and they always loved you from day 1 to forever ,they were always proud of you from day 1 to forever and about my cousins their mom and dad took a break from each other and apparently I over heard today that they got a divorce 💔💔💔💔💔 so my cousins are sad idk(I don’t know) if they know about that but about that if your mom and dad dose that they weren’t meant together or they need/needed a little break from your mom/dad/basically both, but they always loved you and will always and they are always proud of you unless they pretend to love you and be proud of you but that is sad if your parent doesn’t love you or proud of you they lied to you for your life time to now but yea bye!!!
