This great kids book by Louis Sachar was adapted into a movie starring Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight! Sachar wrote the screenplay himself, so does that mean the movie stays faithful?

On the note of Stanley's weight, in the book he begins as overweight but becomes fit and thinner at the camp. I seem to recall hearing that Louis Sachar didn't want to put a child through that kind of body modification and, since Shia Lebeouf nailed the audition, they went with him and decided his health was more important. Props to Sachar and everyone involved in that decision!!

In the book, Zero got to Camp Green Lake at least six weeks before Stanley did. Zero tells Stanley he was the one that stole the sneakers and that he was arrested the next day for stealing a new pair of sneakers. Stanley didn't arrive at Green Lake until at least six weeks later because his trial was delayed because of baseball season.

3:34. I think the green lake curse broke because the Warden got her comeuppance. The treasure was found and she was denied the ability to even look at it. She was the descendent of the man who killed Sam. Who spent his entire life searching for that treasure, and who made his family search for the treasure. So to find it, but be denied access to it, was like Kates last FU to the man who killed her love. Or perhaps just the warden being arrested broke the curse.

There are quite a few minor differences between the book and the movie, mostly details in the book that were left out of the movie.

I think Pendanski hated Zero because he recognized Zero was intelligent enough to potentially see through what was going on at Camp Green Lake. Despite Pendanski liking to present himself as a kind helpful individual that's not who he was, in fact the book and film provide several hints and by the end confirm he is really just as bad as the warden and Mr. Sir. However his hatred for Zero is so intense that it overrides his desire to be seen as nice as evident by the fact that he is willing to bully Zero in front of everyone else. So it must be for a good reason i.e. he is a threat to the camp's operations. This is also why he specifically targets Zero's intelligence and constantly berates him for being "stupid" such as when he learned Stanley was teaching him to read. I believe that both he and Mr. Sir took issue to this because him learning to read could make him a greater threat to their operations. Also the curse on Camp Green Lake ended because the warden was suspended. As long as Trout Walkers family was in charge of the land it would never rain as a consequence of Sam's murder.

I watch the movie at least once a year, and one thing I've noticed is that Stanley's mannerisms are a little bit cockier than they were in the book. He seemed on edge almost all of the time in the book, but in the movie he held back laughter when Mr.Sir introduced himself, and he never really allowed any of the authoritarian characters to make him openly admit there was nothing odd going on, or otherwise completely talk down to him.

I think the drought ended at Camp Green Lake because justice was finally served to the Walker family of Green Lake.

I remember reading this book as a kid and seeing the movie not long after. I remembered the movie being super identical to the book and loved it for it. Helps that the book is so short to fit a movie format. Interesting to hear the differences however small. Glad I remembered most right cause I just saw a bunch of comments saying the book was way better lol. I thought they were both great.

Yeah in this case I don't know why someone would think the book is so much better than the movie because they seriously are so similar! But I've had times where I read the book first and was very nit-picky about the movie so I get it.

Actually Stanley refuses to help Zero learn to read in the movie too. At least at first, It's not until Zero finishes Stanley's hole after Mr. Sir took him to the Warden's cabin because of the sunflower seeds that Stanley changes his mind and agrees to help him.

Stanley and Zero break the curse on the Yelnats family. Stanley was the great grandson of Elya Yelnats and Hector Zeroni (Zero) was the great- great grandson of Madame Zeroni, so when Stanley carried Zero up the mountain and sang to him, that broke the curse.. The curse that started when Sam died was a different curse. God was punishing the town for the murder of Sam.

Although both the movie and the book were pretty good, I enjoyed the book a little more because it did a better job of explaining the reasoning behind the events of the story. The movie left more “holes” for the viewer to fill in. The book also included a few stories that were completely left out of the movie (such as the Derrick Dunne story) to make the story more appealing to adult audiences. But the movie added a few good scenes to make the story a lot more interesting so it was pretty entertaining as well. 👍

Your videos are great! Maybe Pendansky picks on Zero because Pendansky thinks Zero has no family to defend him. This fits with Pendanskys overall cowardly manner. BTW I was a fat kid when I was 9 and Holes was one of my favorite books(along with The Hobbit and The Outsiders) I felt betrayed when the movie came out with skinny Shia as Stanley.

Good point! And that definitely makes sense about being let down by the casting of a skinny kid

Possible reason for Pendanski not liking Zero even though he had just gotten there recently: resentment. He seemed to have a lot of resentment considering Zero was a kid, when it came to him not talking. I mean, he was just a man faking being a doctor, right? Probably likes the power over the kids. Everything negative was about him being stupid because he didn't talk, or thinking he was better than the rest of them because he wouldn't answer Pendanski's questions. Pendanski couldn't make Zero do what he wanted and I think that pissed him off.

OK serious question, why didn't the warden buy ground penetration radar and an excavator? She'd found the treasure a lot faster that way.

Probably because the Warden would have made more money by establishing a camp and making the prisoners dig holes.

Jesus of Nazareth vs The Bible 8:30 bc racism idk I liked the book more than movie 1) because I read it b4 the movie was released 2) bc it was a very dry book that's main appeal was the amount of imagination needed to bring the story to life. having it projected on the screen felt wrong because I wasn't involved in creating the ideas, instead someone else's imagination was substituted for my own.

That definitely makes sense. I love seeing a book come to life, but I love books because you get to take part in the story's creation by using you imagination
