Hopping over the fence and going down was dangerous... a moment of not paying attention, and hitting the ground would hurt... A LOT! I asked Loreta Frankonyte and JoAnn Wiltz to stay above because I wasn't willing to let them risk their lives.
Please watch this video and if you WOULDN'T dare going down like this, I will ask that you donate $1 for the animals today here: www.HopeForPaw... ❤️
We really want to do more for the animals, but we need to add more members/supporters to join our team.
Thank you so much!!!

Squirrels are responsible for creating our forests, and maintaining the health of our forests. They play a very important role. They're also food for predators above them, on the food chain. So they sustain lots of lives, in multiple ways. They play a role nothing else can fill. And they're very intelligent. At least one soecies' brain grows 15% in the fall, to remember where they scatter-cached all their nuts. They don't reclaim them all... and that's one way trees get planted. :). And let's not forget all the safe exercise they provide for your dog! ;)

Um, just a thought… wonder if the squirrel might have figured out he could climb up the ladder himself if it was just left in place for a while, with food near its base?
@MarySanchez-qk3hp
@MarySanchez-qk3hp 3 жыл бұрын
Better to definitively, quickly resolve the issue. They didn't know of he was sick or injured. Turns out he was old, a few broken teeth, and emaciated. Animals in the LA River should be removed, rescued. Something none of you has thought of, is that hawks could swoop in and take him. He was debilitated, and HFP did the right thing and took him to experts who could diagnose and treat him. Squirrels aren't people (though sometimes nicer) snd might not figure out the ladder. And there are also, sadly, people who would use him for target practice, maybe stray dogs stuck down there who would eat him. Better to just catch him, get help, and release him when he is improved. The right thing to do.

I want you all to know that you are helping more than just animals. I suffer from severe depression, I've been hospitalized several times in the psych ward, on suicide watch. I've tried to hurt myself a few times. I found your channel several months ago and absolutely love how you folks take care of wayward animals. I watch a few of your videos a day and I believe it has made a real difference in my life. I'm planning to go to a few different local animal shelters and offer any type of assistance I can to help them. I'm not in a position to offer and money but I can offer Love. I'm also hoping to receive love from the animals I help. Since I've found your channel (I've also found a few similar channels) I've noticed a real difference in my mindset. My bouts of depression don't last as long and they're not driving me to want to hurt myself. I have a long way to go still, but I am happy about my progress in the last 6 months. So is my Dr. Thank you for the inspiration. I'm hoping I can eventually get my own pet to bring home someday to help me when I'm feeling really depressed. Thanks for all you do :)

It's isn't that easy. And I've been a wildlife rehabilitator for 37 years, and I think they did the right thing. Absolutely. The animal needed time to recover. HFP is rescuers, not pest control experts. If you didn't have edibles for the squirrels, they wouldn't hang around. It would have to include the cooperation of your neighbors, too. People think they can have designer back yards: "I want this animal but not that animal." It doesn't work that way, Nature is amoral and opportunistic. You have to think like them to outsmart them. And squirrels are very important to the establishment of the ecosystem, and maintaining its health. Sorry.

Next time, tie some foam "logs" together and lower them down the side. The squirrel will figure out to climb up real quick.

Learn about squirrels before you go trying to "save" it. They are excellent climbers. It wouldn't have any issues getting out of drainage water way. The reason the squirrel stayed there, was because it was getting free easy food. Once the people stopped feeding it, it would leave. NOT STUCK! You're messing with a wild animal.

Uhhhh.... all you needed to do was lean a long 2x4 piece of lumber against the wall for a day or two. Squirrels know how to climb up long wood branches......

I love all animals, but there is something special about a squirrel... I don't know what it is... they're just adorable. Thank you for rescuing him and seeing his life as important enough to take the time! Also thanks to the guy for calling too! I feed the squirrels around my house all the time. Over the years, I've even had a few who trusted me enough to come take it out of my hand.

A long pole, say made up of thick bamboo stakes tied together would have worked too! Lol squirrels are lightning can climb darn near anything.

You do great work but seriously, a squirrel would only need a rope tossed over the edge to climb out on its own.

Yes but this little squirrel needed medical care for a couple of weeks and a bit of fattening up.

If the squirrel is healthy you may be right. Since they didn't know wether it was injured or not, it was safer to check that first.

My first thought was that squirrels are really good climbers - so a nice, thick rope and maybe he could have climbed out on his own.

I was wondering about that, too. I think it has been a horrible concrete trap for years and still nothing is being done about it. That just can't be right. Would it really be too expensive to install a few simple ladders for animals that have fallen in there? I hope something's going to be changed soon.

All the squirrel had to do was walk his way out through one of the drains. He was probably down there playing in the "river" on his little squirrel vacation. Makes for a good video I guess.
