Ian Anderson is more than just a great flute player, guitar player, singer/songwriter, composer/arranger, producer…more importantly he is an extraordinary entertainer and frontman. I am so fortunate and thankful to have been a part of this in the ‘70’s…

Captivating performance by Tulls best grouping of musicians. RIP John Glascock.

This live version is actually before it was recorded in the studio. Anderson plays bass on the studio version...it's a pity because as one can see, John Glascock really kills it here...what a bassist he was. RIP John.

Listen to the studio version and you hear how F'n hard this song is to sing . Ian at this time could nail it. It's mind blowing how good these guys were! For like 10 yrs these guys couldn't be touched as far as their live performances and the content they put out. Flying Dutchman is another song wit similar energy. It's so cool that all this footage is being restored to this quality. I never thought I'd be able to see this incredible stuff. There is some great footage of "Backdoor Angels" off the War Child album. Why do the faithfully have such a will to believe in something, and call it the name they choose having chosen nothing... What a line👻🐟

I heard this live a few times in the mid 70's. Now, Ian is in his mid 70's. I am in my 70's and just in September had the opportunity to hear Ian and his latest version of Tull play this twice in Ohio. I must say, it was incredibly moving. Ian was singing about Dark Ages in the 70's and now The video behind the stage showed the current state of affairs on earth today with climate change war and political strife. Truly a dark age. The voice is gone but I must say these recent performances brought a few tears to my eyes. This music, this Tull music, this Anderson, I have had such joy to hear it all my life. Ian is responsible for nearly 30 albums which include several Anderson solo work. The amazing thing.... no 2 are alike but all sound like Tull.

Martin at that time, had been in the band since the second album "Stand Up" (1969). The original guitarist was Mick Abrahams, who appeared on the first album "This Was" (1968) and left to form his own band Blodwyn Pig. A little-known fact is that Tony Iommi also played guitar with Tull but is not on any of their recordings. This was before his Black Sabbath days.

The original guitarist was Mick Abrahams. He recorded the first album, "This Was..." with them, but Ian wanted to go in a different direction, musically, so Mick left and Martin came in. Mick was heavily blues based and wanted to continue with that original sound, Ian wanted to get away from that. Mick formed Blodwyn Pig shortly after his departure.

Lee: Yeah, if you were able to see only Barriemore Barlowe's camera his precision and detailed parts would drop your jaw. Studio albums are better for this, if only for keeping you from being distracted by Ian's incredible showmanship. But this was a great pick, they all shined here.

@L33Reacts It's my favorite JT album and possibly my favorite album ever by any band/musician. But it's VERY out there, so no rush getting there alright? Take your time and savor it in the meantime. (Personally probably took like 5-10 listens before it clicked for me, as the greatest albums for me often do, not very musically gifted here, that might be why lol...) Oh and once you get there btw there was this scrapped album (due to food poisoning among other things) just before which heavily influenced A Passion Play, it's called *The Chateau D'Herouville Sessions* and I highly recommend doing it either before or after A Passion Play. Also pretty out there (shocker! 😅)

9:22 It must be Dave Pegg, not John Glascock on bass. Glascock was fired from the band during the "Stormwatch" session and he didn't even play on the studio version of "Dark Ages".

Matin Lancelot Barre is the member with the longest tenure. John Glascock, the bass player, sadly passed away from heart problems shortly after this. He wasn’t able to complete the recording sessions for The « Stormwatch » album. Due to this Ian played bass on some songs. The sound quality on this live version isn’t great, but Barlow’s drumming is stellar, as usual.

You broke the rule man! You reacted to a live version before the studio one lol! Jokes aside I suggest you to listen the studio version of Dark Ages (maybe when you will listen the entire Stormwatch album) cause this live you reacted to was played before the album was actually recorded and this song is quite different in the arrangement (one of the biggest differences is that there is a real string section and it's epic!).

ive watched this performance like a hundred times, they totally nailed the breakdown and the production is actually pretty good for back then! the solos in this song are so cool, a great band song with a great progression. this was an early version i think so the acoustic opening is a bit shorter in the studio version, and a couple wrong lyrics, but the energy is just unreal! heard this a couple years ago and it was on repeat for a week. super proggy but also heavy, i do not know why it is so underrated.

This was at the end of what many fans consider the best Tull line-up. Sadly, John Glascock died of various health issues in November of 1979. Barlow was close to Glascock and heartbroken by his loss. He was also upset with Ian because he thought John hadn't been treated fairly. Barlow then left the band. Shortly after that, D Palmer and John Evan also left, leaving only Ian and Martin. In a 1982 song, Slow Marching Band, some fans think there's a message to Barlow .... Dream of me as the nights draw cold still marking time through Winter. You paid the piper and called the tune, and you marched the band away. Take a hand and take a bow. You played for me; that's all for now, oh, and never mind the words: just hum along and keep on going.

Dann that is one of the saddest things I've ever heard about band drama... life hits artists hard. We're always wrapped up in other things in our minds that we tend to miss what is right in front us until it's too late... then we turn that into more art. It's a vicious, beautiful cycle.

You are not mistaken. After Mick abrams, who was (or is, i hope so) Barre was the man behind the Sound of this Band. Evan is guilty for the musicianship since "benefit". Barlowe and glascock on top evans arrangements👌💪💪💪💪 Theres is a sad Thing in that Band history, that the glooming anderson turns out as an.... "the Band is me" A pitty I would have Find my Peace with "A" if anderson had Shown some kind of.... Well doesnt matter... Im Listen the base on this track with stiff nipples😊

Just my personal opinion but I would have recommended many other Tull songs before this (though it comes off better live, due to their incredible energy and musicianship), and the Stormwatch album in general is pretty low on my Tull totem pole. I remember the day I bought it in 1979 and listened to it with a friend. Not my cup of tea, aside from Something's On The Move and Orion. Again, just my opinion.
