Don't take that list too seriously. She is using way too many overgeneralizations. When she says, Americans always or never, that is absolutely incorrect. We are not puppets or sheep. When she says parents always teach their children to ask why, she obviously doesn't have children. Many (but not all) parents generally teach their children to ask questions to learn things, but not to back talk. There is a difference.

I’m an American who has eaten with one hand on my lap. I only bring my hand up to cut food or butter bread. And seen others do the same. I particularly do this when I am in a formal meal with prominent people. These occasions usually have a more elaborate place setting where there is a.need to be sure to use the correct fork, spoon and whatever. So the video is correct in that this is what is considered proper dining etiquette in the USA. Elbows on the table is considered bad manners in these settings.
@bluflaam777

@@anndeecosita3586 Good on ya' for qualifying it. At a fine dinner, no one will have their hands above the table... no one will have their elbows on the table... no one will be flinging their arms around when they speak. But how many meals do you eat that call for that sort of etiquette? Even at holiday meals most don't do that. If you're at a black-tie setting, then sure. I haven't been to one of those in a while LOL.

For a wedding, the Bride will "register" at a department store, for example, with a list of items that she and the groom will need in their new home. So when I go in to buy a wedding present, I can pick one item and cross it off the list. It's a way to keep from getting six toasters and seven crock pots as wedding gifts.
@DivergentDroid
@DivergentDroid 15 күн бұрын
This is also a scheme cooked up by the dept store to force everyone in the wedding party to buy the gift from that store. It's not needed. The couple gets the receipts so if they have one too many toasters they can exchange it.
@timothyweers8054
@timothyweers8054 14 күн бұрын
Also, it helps guests from over purchasing same items. Once an item is purchased, the giver goes and marks the item(s) off list. It also makes it easier to buy items at store where registry is but not required.
@bluflaam777
@bluflaam777 14 күн бұрын
@@DivergentDroid You can also register at more than one store. Every wedding I've gone to has done that. At some point you get told which stores they're registered especially if they're buying a new home. You can give cash and gift cards. You have a year to give the present. You can visit the store(s) where they're registered and print the list...then buy it wherever you want. They can return the one they don't want. No one is forced to do anything.

@DivergentDroid Why not just get them something from the list. That way, they don't have to return your gift. I agree that it's a great marketing device, but it's also a useful service for the guests and the couple. American ingenuity strikes again.

@@fluffyou9276 There are a lot of laws in place. But having one to just move ppl along is less of a problem than arresting someone for prostitution, or public drunkenness, drug dealing, being a public nuisance etc. It gives the cop options that are less than criminal. Regardless of where/why any law was written, how/why it gets used is the issue. Otherwise it forces a cop to arrest someone when the better option would be to move someone "on their way". I'd rather be told, "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here", than to be arrested for a criminal offence.

I am a 75 year old widow of eight years, and yes, “old school.” If a man asks me for a date, he pays…every time. The man I’m dating now is an “old school” gentleman, and he would be offended if I pulled out my credit card to pay. He has always opened my car door getting in and getting out. He goes in front of me when we are going downstairs and behind me when we’re going upstairs, to catch me if I trip. He also sends me a beautiful bouquet every month, and we’re in the second year of that sweet gesture! He lives 18 miles from me. He’s lives in Fort Worth, and I’m in a suburb. He comes to pick me up even though we have a date in Fort Worth. He never says, “Meet me there.”He’s tender, kind, thoughtful and generous! We have much in common, we both have the same type of cancer, and we both have similar treatments. And I love him!

As for the homeless, its legal for anyone of age to live where they want as long as they are not breaking any laws. Under a bridge, in a park or wherever. The problem with the homeless is many reasons. Some may have mental problems but they still have the right to be homeless if they chose. Some have terrible drug addictions while some may have falling into hard financial times and can't afford a home of their own and will live anywhere they can and they have a job. Living with relatives or friends is considered homeless too. Most homeless will not accept public housing as they feel safer where they are even if it's in a city. In California and some large American cities, owning or renting a home is very expensive and many people have gone homeless because of it. Most people try to help the homeless and some are scared of them and keep their distance. Unfortunately, some American families are just a paycheck or two away from being homeless.

Then a few hours before the funeral we have visitation for people who might want to view the body but not stay for the funeral or who want to see the person one last time before the coffin is closed for the last time.

We have laws here that protect certain hours of quiet. Generally it’s 10pm-6am. You cannot just ignore your neighbors peace and quiet simply because you feel like having a loud party, or playing loud music. Number 34- I don't know if this is a regional thing or what, but when my parents passed away, every sympathy card my sisters and I received (at the funerals and in the mail) contained money (cash and even checks) in addition to flowers and plants. We are from South Dakota and my parents grew up in Minnesota. Lots of Minnesotans came, some drove 5 hours here and 5 hours back! Also, people brought over home cooked meals, freezer meals, fresh baked bread, and fresh vegetables from their gardens (only in the case of my mother passing since it was in the summer), and my sister's neighbor mowed her lawn for a couple weeks. We didn't need any of those things, that's just what you do here.

They either take it to their house or to the church. I must say my family is Southern and we always have a meal called a repast immediately following burial. This is usually held at the church and the food is paid for and prepared by the church members. I moved to the Midwest and they have never heard of a repast. After the repast some people go back to the home of the deceased and spend more time with the family there.

6:52 For large events where gifts are expected, it is common for the gift receiver to create a wish list at a large retailer, like Amazon. This gives the gift givers an idea as to what the recipient would like to receive. It also helps coordinate the gifts so the recipient doesn't receive too many of one item (it gets removed from the wish list when someone buys it). Before this became a thing, a common joke was that a newly married couple would receive 10 toasters as wedding gifts. Then they would have to figure out how to return them.

These days we just text the other saying how much we appreciate it or they tell us to our face if they open it in front of us. 33 - very very dependant on the family and funeral 39 - of course we lowkey want to talk about politics. The people in office are the ones making choices that affect all our lives. Definitely get the other persons POV first, talking politics can make a friend or foe out of someone. 45 - This one is true. I had 3 roommates one time, all men. When talking about homeless, you need to understand the official meaning of the term in the US. Homeless means, "not residing in a fixed, regular address." That can be a half million dollar RV, or living with another family member (cousin, uncle, grandmother, brother, etc.. ). Our government often uses that stat to overstate the problem (not that it isn't a problem) to ensure more funding for the bureaucracy.

You're correct but not to your full description. You can live in an RV and not be considered homeless. You can live with a family member and not be considered homeless. You're only considered homeless in the USA if you are sleeping inadequately for example, on a couch or in a shelter...then of course the streets or abandoned dwellings. There are problems with this specific definition of homelessness. I ran into that a couple of years ago. I was living pretty much by your definition of homelessness and was living in my friend's apartment but I was homeless because I wasn't supposed to be there but they denied my application for housing because I had a bed and a roof over my head in an apartment. They might have tweaked the definition by today's standard so I apologize if my data is dated.. It was devastating to be denied simply because it appeared I was sleeping safely at night in someone's apartment. I knew I was homeless and they just disagreed. A year later, I tried again and that same social worker answered and I told them that they made my life so much more impossible denying my homelessness. They agreed and apologized and got me a place as soon as they could. I hope they've changed the definition of homelessness by now.

the reason that all restaurants and stores are so friendly is because the owners know that half the experience going out to eat is the friendliness and other half is the food. So you could have okay food but a really friendly waitress and the customer will come back always. So the owner knows you will bring your business back from the experience alone. In the UK the owners are not that smart if they do not make their people working be friendly. They are most likely losing alot of business because of the boring or unfriendly workers. You need to smile and be polite always. You will get more business guaranteed.

In America,when you are getting married or having a baby shower,they register at certain stores of things they wish for. Friends and family are able to look up the link by name and select items on their list to purchase to gift to them. I hope this makes sense.

The one homeless person's situation that I know personally is a lady who lives out of her shopping cart in front of a grocery store. All her belongings are in the shopping cart. She will gladly accept money, or meals (there's a fast food place in the parking lot). But she has family that has tried to get her into some living situation, but she prefers the streets. She's been there (and gone, and back) for over 20 years. It's sad because not only her family, but those of us who shop at the store she frequents, want her to be safe and healthy. But an adult can do what an adult wants to do, and if she prefers to be on the street, it doesn't matter how much help we offer. Sure, there are many homeless people who just got into a bad situation, or lost a job, and would love a "hand up" to a more stable life. There are also many scammers who sit next to the road with signs saying "Homeless Veteran, God Bless You!" for coins/bills. They're then seen driving away in a Mercedes in a nearby parking lot. The hard part is knowing who is who, which is why I prefer to give money/food either directly to a person, or to a local charity that helps people - rather than upping my taxes (lower take-home pay) for the government to figure out who deserves that money.

Registering for gifts is going to a store & choosing all the things you want for your wedding, baby, etc and when someone needs to buy you a gift they check the register to see what hasn’t been bought yet & get it for you.

In my first apartment, I was the only female out of four roommates. We were all barely out of our teens, in the navy, stationed on the same ship, and not earning much money. It made sense to share a space. They were wonderful friends and continue to be so after all these years.

I'm with u on the presents...If I buy someone a gift, I want to watch them open it. If they put the gifts away till later, when they are alone and the party is over, I take that as rude. I won't be giving them a gift again. The whole idea of me taking the time to choose a gift especially for them is also me watching them open it to see their response...

I feel this video represents a narrow view of American culture. In many communities music and dancing are part of parties, using first names for older adults is considered rude in many communities, etc. Take what she says with a grain of salt.

This was pretty interesting, I liked it altho nothing is ever cut and dried. By Americans liking their space means we don't stand with our faces in anothers when we're talking, we allow a bit of space. And I'm one who does not like hugs altho when I meet a hugger I just silently go with it!

I'm usually 15 minutes late to my friends' homes. But the best late true story is that I was 30 minutes late to my mother's funeral and the only living member left. My friends took it in stride.

Homelessness comes down to all sorts of reasons. I'm a single, middle-aged, and disabled woman who ALMOST had to live in her car. I receive a disability wage from the government that I'm thankful for, but it is an unlivable wage. I was fortunate to find a room to rent in a person's home, otherwise I'd be homeless.

Americans and British do have different ways of using silverware. Americans use only the right hand for the fork. The other hand is in your lap unless you are using the knife. After you use the knife, you set it back down, then continue using the fork in your right hand. I hope that makes sense. I lived in Scotland for a while and everyone thought it was funny. Eating with your fork in one hand and your knife in the other would be not be considered good manners here. Eating pizza or burgers is more casual and no one cares if you eat with both hands. One thing i heard a million times from my mom was not to put your elbows on the table. Lol, sometimes i do it when shes not around but i feel like a barbarian.

Please, you only use your right hand if you're right-handed. If you're left handed, You'd naturally use your left hand. Demonizing use of the left hand is something that died out at least 40 years ago.

I don't know about other places but for Phoenix, Arizona cops don't do squat about people littering or loitering unless it's in front of a business or house and someone calls to complain about it. We have people loitering and littering EVERYWHERE in downtown Phoenix. We also have a lot of graffiti but I honestly don't know how that is handled since I've never been around when or if someone has been caught doing it. I wish parents these days taught their kids to be responsible for their actions!

You only tipped the waitress because you wanted her number, be real! 🤣🤣 No, we do not all eat with one hand down on our laps, although proper manners probably say we should. You drink, eat, and talk. Funerals are what what they are, sad, and when people are grieving, they tend to cry. There's no rule about noise unless you are just being rude. Yes, most people wear black, but depending on what time of year and the weather, it may not matter because no one can see under your coat. After my family funerals we go to the dinner that is back to back with the cemetary back in New Jersey. The diner is called the Tick Tock Diner, and the food is great. Everyone goes there because everyone comes from different parts of New York and New Jersey, and it's a long ride there, so that's where the eating starts, lol. Then it's back to the family's house to be together. Texas isn't the only place with guns, buddy, lol. Lewis if you're 15 minutes early you're 15 minutes late. Plan on being someplace 30 mins early. That way, you're always on time. Yes we teach our kids that so they learn. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask but should've.

Actually the white lily is the more traditional flower at funerals although it really depends on the person being honored. Black is what everyone wears usually the funeral home will give out a black fabric patch that you pin on your lapel to show you are in mourning.

44 - Before I(f) was married, I had lots of male roommates. Sometimes without any other females living with us. For example, I lived in a house in Phoenix, AZ with 6 young men. They were from TX, ND, SD, and NY. They all treated me like their sister and were very protective of me. Also, I've always had male friends. I don't know what the big deal is. It was always plutonic. It must be a maturity thing.

As a married woman, I don’t have friends of the opposite sex. We have friends where we are in a friendship together with another couple, or even single male or female friends, but every hang out and interaction is done as a couple, and if the single friend is a guy, he is primarily friends with my husband, but welcomed to our home to hang hang out with our whole family. Yeah, whoever made this list isn’t speaking for all of us .

We are a very diverse country with many differences. For myself, I am a woman that has always gotten along better with men, so I have formed friendships with men throughout my life - at college, through work, or that I have lived near and many of those friendships have endured as I am involved in other relationships or they are. I have some male friends that I have known for over 20 years. I am not currently in a relationship, but if I met someone and he wanted me to end a friendship because of his own insecurities, it wouldn't be my friendships of 20 years that ended.

The term “Homeless” is a way to describe people who do not have stable or permanent housing. You can live with your family as an adult and still be technically homeless. Because they can ask you to leave at anytime. Many homeless people have jobs, but can’t afford housing because in many places, housing is very expensive.

I think it’s important for them to think for themselves and reason well but simply questioning authority can be a disaster. That means they may question anything they don’t like and where does the obedience come in. I can’t imagine teaching a class of 20-30 students who question every task because they think it’s stupid or unimportant 😮‍💨 I think we can have a healthy skepticism and will follow laws as adults. Because if we question something we have the logic and forethought to know what we are getting into.
