“So far, so good. So far, so good…”
On one hand, La Haine is a grab bag of every filmmaking trick that was cool in the 90s. On the other hand, it’s a scathing look at systemic violence that’s as relevant as ever even 30 year later. The story of three guys outside of Paris grappling with the aftermath of a riot in which police officers put one of their friends in a coma, La Haine is a tough but essential watch. Clint, Cal and Alex discuss how great the black and white looks, the early days of drone photography and how the film never lets you forget that these guys are just kids trying to get through their day.
Meanwhile, Dan’s algorithm has jumped off a building and, as he passes each floor on the way down, says “so far, so good…”

The Criterion Channel La Haine collection includes some deleted scenes that are actually shown in color. The Eiffel Tower scene is pretty great because you get to hear the crew break out in cheers after Kassovitz cuts.

Great pick, Dan. It sucks that it's still relevant today, but that's this film's superpower. I have 100 things I could say, but I'll limit it to one (well, two, to say that Ferris Bueller has to be on the "Day in a Life" list, if not the number one). To me, the most important element of the film is the theme of inevitability. From the opening "So far, so good" it takes us by the hand (while punching us in the mouth) through a day where we know we're marching towards tragedy. I think you're right about the meaning of the old guy's toilet story, but I think there's also another element. He has spent the past few minutes listening to Vinz saying he has to shoot a cop if his friend dies, so he tells him the story about his own friend who died, but didn't have to. The friend created his own hell, and is dead because of it. He's telling Vinz that the only reason you have to shoot a cop is because you say you do. But you have a choice, which is the reality we're all coaxed into believing, especially when Vinz hands over the gun. But then Kassovitz pulls the rug out from beneath us and we see that his comment all along was that these guys (and the people in the projects) are headed towards inevitable tragic ends no matter what they do. And perhaps that's because it up to the police, the press and all of us outside the projects to change to create a pathway for those who are helpless to create one. Sorry, rambled, but just feel this film is so multi-layered and glad it's on the list.

Let's have some words on that soundtrack... Part of my growing up. The artist playing his vinyl in the window is Anouar Hajoui, Aka Cut Killer. He's mixing Assassin de la Police (Cop Killer, or Killer Cop) of NTM (Nique Ta Mère = F*CK your mama) with Je ne regrette rien (I have no regrets) of Edith Piaf.

I watched this film in my high school French class. XD My teacher was French and Algerian so. She definitely didn't mind showing some 16-year-olds black and white think pieces on police violence. It stuck with me for YEARS and then I watched it again twice. I personally didn't find this a tough movie? I LOVED how much it made me think. ALSO, Kassovitz is also the weird dude with the weird hat at the beginning of the 5th Element whose gun Bruce Willis confiscates!

Cool episode! I love La Haine. I think it was gracious of you to opt not to strike it off your top 100, despite none of you having it on your individual lists. Also, it seems like The Babadook is omitted from the rankings displayed in the description; is this simply a mistake or did it get taken off the list?

Asterix (tiny smart dude) and Obelix (fat dumb dude) are the heroes of a rebellious Gallic village during the Roman empire in a famous French comic book and movie series. They get superpowers from a magical brew. Gérard Depardieu played Obelix.

I'm glad to see this on the list, especially since the French government in modern history was a subject of study for me in my senior film thesis recently. An important point to make is that France has not only not improved but has even eliminated the concept of race from their constitution. These policies have only increased discrimination and do not allow for progress to be made in structural racism. "La Haine" is still a significant and vital film to examine and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Asterix and Obelix are greatly beloved comic book characters, not only popular in france, but all over Europe. They're a couple of rebellious gauls, causing all sorts of mischief to the conquering romans. Very Witty, very funny. Also made into a few animated feature-length films (worth a watch), and several popular, but kinda poorly made comedy movies (starring, amongst others, Gerard Depardieu and Roberto Benigni). Look 'em up!
