This was incredible in the theater. I agree with David Ehrlich from Indiewire that this is the first of its kind in being a musical that disintegrates in front of your eyes. Like it begins as a musical but as the characters learn that they will never really get the life they wanted (as shown in the epilogue), the songs become rarer until one last hurrah at Mia's audition scene, where they say goodbye.

They do all of their own singing and dancing. He has been dancing forever. Would you change your entire style of music? She is going through the idea that he isn't playing what he likes or wants to play. She wants him to be happy and he gives it up so she can quit her job and do what she wants. It is his sister's wedding. She is not answering his calls.

The fact that the Cinematographers Guild not only nominated this for an Oscar, but it actually won is amazing to me because the blocking and shot composition during many of the dance numbers is really quite bad and detracts from the choreographer's and dancers' hard work--there are some YT videos analyzing this that I agree with. But Chazelle presumably intended it that way and managed to win Best Director as well, so what do I know. It really ought to have won for screenplay instead. Also, complaining that musicals aren't "real" is like complaining that sci fi isn't real, or animation isn't real, or horror isn't real. Movies are not real, period.

I am sure it was just the feat of doing a number like that during the day on a busy LA expressway. As well as the other intricate dance numbers they did. And musicals are definitely not everyone's jam, but you're right, it's still just a film

From the guy who doesn’t like musicals - I get what you are saying that all movies are fictional, however the human actions/reactions still tend to be based on how someone would treat a situation, yea it can be over dramatized but still one can imagine being in that place. I could never imagine myself or anyone else bursting into song based on a situation in front of them

Ryan gosling sí es músico. Tiene una banda llamada Dead Man's Bones. Canta y toca muy bien. El tipo es talento por todos lados 💜 Buen video 👍
