i just want to say that you truly inspire me to pursue a career as a cosmetic chemist. i’m a junior right now in college working on my major in biomedical science and a minor in chemistry. i loved my organic chemistry labs so much and it’s cool to see you applying some of these chemistry concepts to cosmetics! before i started college, i wasn’t sure what i was going to do and i would have never thought to make the connection between the two things i really love and enjoy. seeing you do this really pushes me to want to complete my undergrad because i actually have an idea on what to after college. thank you for these videos 🥺

Hi Gabrielle. I never, ever thought about how shampoo was made until today, when I had an idea for what I thought would be a fun shampoo brand. I thought, "I wish someone had a technical video about how to make a small batch of shampoo." And there you were! Now I know I am late to the party, but I want you to know I really appreciate you explaining what all the ingredients were for, and talking about what you DIDN'T include. I don't have a lab coat or a stainless steel table or beakers, etc. (wish I did), but now I feel like I could make a test batch of shampoo if I wanted to. I don't have a chemistry background (assume you do), but I now understand all the basic elements. Thanks! I love the internet! Spent my first 35 years without it (some people really are that old) but now I don't know how we lived without it. Cheers!

Polyquaternium 10 is notorious for building up in the scalp and hair. You would need to use a sulfate shampoo at once a week to get rid of build up. As for the other wash days, you can use a sulfate free shampoo (which is best).

Please explain the significance of the ionic charge of surfactants. I am confused because I once read that like charges should be combined where the exceptionsa re amphoterics and non-ionics that can be combined with any other type. However, how are you able to combine xanthan gum with an anionic (which is negatively charged)? Do the rules change for certain types of cationics (polymers or quats)?
