Hi Marie, I just made these with the SCI powder, I took the powder down a couple of grams then thought I would just spray water in until it was maleable, I wound up panicking and chucking water in as it took a lot! In true form I dont know how much water😅 buuut, they worked out! They are set out to dry now.x

I have just ordered SCI powder as well as there seems to be a shift in demand from needles/flakes to powder in my local market. Will run a trial towards of next week. If I may how much water did you end up putting in the formula? How did the bars turnout - great results?
@carolinepalmer4408 Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, I am a new formulator and I am making panicky errors. I wish I knew how much I put in but fair to say the formula was very forgiving and the bars dried beautifully and they are still together with use. This is really great Shampoo.
@shoresofreedom Жыл бұрын
your formula is way better than lush! their original shampoo bars with SLS noodles were absolutely terrible, so drying and left my hair frizzy af. now they changed it to sodium coco-sulfate noodles which is no better. i ve literally just tried a sodium coco-sulfate bar and it s the worst shampoo bar i ve ever used. i have a question about the cocoa butter and stearic acid : does it leave the hair feeling waxy? and about the clay : is it necessary and is it drying? what can we substitute it with?

@YasuTaniina Жыл бұрын
Everything I've researched about my hair type says to stay clear away from cocoa butter (and shea butter too for that matter) because its too heavy and weights down my curls. I'd love a conditioning shampoo bar, or a straight up conditioning bar that is more light weight
@HumblebeeAndMe Жыл бұрын
Research is great, but do you know from experience that less than 4% cocoa butter in a wash-out product is problematic for your hair vs. hair like yours, generally? I've got pretty easily weighed-down waves, but this formulation doesn't cause any issues for me :)
@Josh-pm9xf Жыл бұрын
Interesting video. Very well explained and put across. The only thing I'm struggling with is... surely all these ingredients are going to cost way more than 6 lush bars? If that isn't the case, some pricing in the video wouldn't have gone amiss.
@HumblebeeAndMe Жыл бұрын
Yes, the initial investment will definitely be more than $15. This is true for cooking, too, and generally most DIY things. If you don't have any of the ingredients and had to buy everything brand new, that'll run you about $150USD from Bramble Berry (though you could easily make some swaps to lower that number quite a lot, like dropping the fragrance and using a cheaper oil than marula oil-if you already had coconut oil, for example, that work work and would save $30 as the smallest bottle BB sells is 4oz). Once you've got everything you can make 10 LUSH-sized shampoo bars for about $26 USD worth of ingredients vs. $150 USD to buy 10 bars from LUSH, and you'd have lots of leftover ingredients. If you're looking for a simpler formulation with a lower up-front ingredient investment, check out this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpKlYXeAq5dmmKc Happy making!

Yes, please! I only have SCI powder. Can I use one of your other formulations with SCI powder and add the conditioner?
@ayalightfire4030 Жыл бұрын
Same here, I only have SCI powder. I think the key will be balancing clay-sci-liquidy stuff ratio.... I think a bit of experimentation and tweaking and we're good to go.
@ayalightfire4030 Жыл бұрын
@@ericablue2296I don't see why not. That's a great idea :) I will try that.
@HumblebeeAndMe Жыл бұрын
Generally you can, but @ayalightfire4030 is right-you'll need to re-balance the liquid/solid ratio to get things right. SCI powder has far more surface are than SCI needles do, so it will absorb a lot more liquid, resulting in a drier final dough that requires more water to be workable. I'd probably start by reducing the SCI by 1-2% and increasing the water by the same amount :) And start small; 30g (1.06oz) or so.

Question: what if you added (and mixed) the surfactants right into the melted oil base, which means you do not need to mess about with the distilled water and the clay? Sure the paste it'd produce would look less Lush-like, but I personally do not care for clay residue in my hair.
@celescole313 ай бұрын
I actually did that because I am lazy and did some other formula mixing wax/oil/surfactant together. It turned out great (to my liking)(though still keep the order/melting phase in mind) and it's the best I've made!

Where did you get the little flip caps for the Optiphen that allow you to control the drops? Mine came with just a regular top that unscrewed so the bottle was just open and the top for the 16oz bottle so you could control the flow better? Thanks. I can't wait to try this project!

great video marie! I was thinking of adding either btms25 or 50 into my shampoo bars and making it into a 2 in 1 bar. can i ask you why you had to cool the mixture in the fridge and then chop it up? Can't you just put the mixture into the dry phase with the other wet phase too???

I'm emulating a famous Lush bar; this is what they do for that one. I've done the mash-it-all together thing in the past and it works (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmWqo4hjoJaNmZI), but I find the bars do tend to be stickier to work with a softer towards the end of their life, so I've moved away from doing it that way.

Quick question, you used curl complex and said we could customize it accordingly, but I have super fine, thin, straight hair what do you recommend in its place of the curl complex? I know you mentioned hydrolyzed protein or botanical extract but whats best for fine, straight hair? I am so over whelmed with all the things out there. Thanks in advance for your help and all of your wonderful videos!
@HumblebeeAndMe Жыл бұрын
I'd probably choose hydrolyzed rice protein! It contains proteins with both cationic (positive) and anionic (negative) charges. This opposing charges help add volume to hair by repelling one another. www.humblebeeandme.com/project/hydrolyzed-rice-protein/

I'm confused about the preservative. Why are you preserving twice. I never heard of this. Why can't you preserve once for the bar? I mean in other formulas you don't preserve twice.
@HumblebeeAndMe Жыл бұрын
I am effectively preserving it once; I've simply divided the preservative between two different phases proportionately as they will not fully intermix in the final product. If only the dough portion included preservative there would be little nuggets of unpreserved conditioner bar throughout. The overall preservative concentration is still in line with recommended use. This is definitely a 'better safe than sorry' approach; extended testing might show it is unnecessary.
