Acetone is an even more extreme example - really safe on nails and skin (a bit drying, adding some glycerin can counteract that), but it'll eat through most plastics in front of your eyes!

One mistake I've found out, sadly from personal experience, applying body sunscreen at the beach and not at home. I will rush it and end up missing spots, applying somehow less and the end results are guaranteed sunburns at places that are hard to reach. Whenever I take my time and apply it at home (and with regular reapplication at the beach) I never have this problem.

Or putting the sunscreen AFTER wearing your swimwear means there’s a risk of missing patches like around the leg region or boobs, as swimwear will move around when you’re wearing it. I always apply it all over my nude body, allow to air dry and THEN wear my swimsuit. Also remembering to apply sunscreen to backs of ears and into hairlines and partings. If you’re sitting down a lot at the beach etc be wary of wearing off the sunscreen that’s on your bottom too, burnt cheeks are a real pain in the butt!

Same, I think that much should be enough for most people. I talked to some dermatologists and they said as long you have SPF 15 on your face it will be fine for everyday with other sun protective measures.

Michelle is my savior! I used to demonize certain ingredients like alcohol and fragrance, until there’s a day that i always find difficulties when it comes to buy or use skincare because all my skincare seems not safe. But now i realized that how i use, how i store it, and how the product is formulated can make a huge diffrent from product to product, and it make me more relax about my skincare routine! Not to mention, skin reaction to a product is world top secret! Regards from someone who had dry skin, eczema, acne and dehydrated prone skin that live in very humid climate 🇮🇩

@@lisahayes3648 its totally okay for you. In the end, the best skincare product is what you constantly use and like, its preference! Michelle’s video can be work as a reference just in case one day you find something that pleasant to use but contains ingredients that you might avoid!

@@lisahayes3648 okay, so, I checked Johnson's website a few days ago because they're very transparent about their fragrance formulation. They also consider their fragrance to be "hypoallergenic" because their products are made for babies. They mostly use a combination of floral and fruity scents, and guess what? They use 41 different chemicals to create a rose scent. Not to mention the base of their fragrance contains alcohol, and they still have to mix one scent with the other to create a signature scent. And that's what they call "hypoallergenic". Imagine using a fragranced product without knowing what they use to create the smell. While i personally don't hate fragrance and alcohol, but my skin reacts really badly to them. And i always suggest everyone around me to use fragrance-free products because i really care about them.

If you leave sunscreen in your car in Phoenix during the summer, the bottle will disintegrate. So you won’t have the worry about reusing the sunscreen. Your only concern will be to clean the mess out of your car.

An advice that might be useful to others: cleaning your bottles regularly! 😉 This might be obvious to some already, but making sure your products aren't exposed to sun, dust and airborne bacteria (in case you do your routine in the bathroom) is important to keep them safe. Also, sometimes, when we are in a hurry, we also might use more than one product in a rush, and our sticky fingers transfer the bits of a product onto the bottle of another. I try to clean my bottles with a wet cloth regularly and wash my hands before doing my skincare routine, and it's very useful.

I have always been hyper-vigilant about using spatulas for pots of cream/product/etc. + washing my hands before touching my face. I feel like the pandemic has helped me say “I TOLD YOU SO!” To everyone who think I take it too far 🙃

That's definitely good practice! I personally live life on the edge and use clean fingers, assuming that a jar product has been formulated to stand up to a higher level of contamination, but if it's a very "natural" brand with lots of plant extracts and weak preservatives I won't keep the product for long.

I tend to drop serums onto my face with the dropper but I never touch my skin with it for hygiene reasons... I find the fingers or palm of my hand absorbs half the product of I dispense it there before transferring to my face, especially with watery serums like the Niod CAIS2 serum. I hate waste.

As someone else pointed out, it can get into your eyes so not a good thing to be showcasing as an influencer. No need to worry, if you're not telling viewers how to use products. keep dropping it on your face straight from the dropper if that's your thing

The 2 Finger Rule for sunscreen is my favorite way to make sure I'm getting approximately the right amount on my face. What you do is dispense the sunscreen from your palm to the tip of your index and middle finger in a line, then apply all of it to your face. I measured it once and it was approximately the right amount or a little more, and I have very small hands. It is just the easiest way for me rather than remembering what a teaspoon looks like!

Mistakes I have made are over exfoliating, thinking that more must be better, too many new products introduced too quickly, and not using moisturizer on my oily-combo skin when I was much younger... teen products, moisturizer specifically, back in the late 80s sucked so much.

OMG - I was an 80s teen - ripping my skin up with Clinique scrub, Clinique mask (it was a scrub!), Clinique Clarifying Lotion #3/Exfoliating Lotion (they now market it as #4)...all that alcohol, harsh scrubbing, and menthol etc, and I wondered why I still had acne and oily skin. I was a boarding school girl from 1985-1989 and we virtually ALL used Clinique in all its glory - the dermatologists we then had to visit to deal with our acne must have been thrilled!

I’m so glad you’re addressing that sheet masks aren’t meant to be used twice or more. I watched a medical esthetician here on KZbin say that it was fine and that the preservatives would be able to rebalance microbes after use a single use and to use them again, and I was shocked.

Re Travel Containers: If the product you use has silicone in it, you cannot put it in a silicone travel tube. Learned this one the hard way. I tend to repackage things for convenience: buy a big bottle of hand sanitizer to refill my handbag sized bottle. Hand sanitizer seems pretty safe, but when refilling things like lotions, I try to run the bottle through the dishwasher, let it air dry, then rinse it with isopropyl alcohol and let it air dry again. I've not had any problems with products going bad or creating reactions, but maybe I've just been lucky. It would be really nice if some sort of refill standards were created. Restaurants have a whole protocol for refilling their containers and containers for food storage are designed to be washed and reused safely. It seems like a similar set of rules would help keep everyone safe.

How to DIY cushion foundation (in particular, can you directly mix foundation with sunscreen, serums, etc - what kind of products and ingredients can foundation be mixed with directly) 3. Re: the transfer of products, yeah I shan't make that mistake again. I transferred a few tubes of inkey list omega water cream to a recycled lush pot, just cos it's hard to get all the product in the squeeze tube. I had sanitised the pot to the best of my ability and dried it out etc. First thing I noticed was that the cream had taken on traces of the fragrance of the previous lush product, despite exhaustive ly cleaning it. Then I noticed that the product began to separate. Water seemed to separate from the cream. And lastly it took on a more tacky texture which caused my skin to become irritated. I'm not sure if this would have worked better in a completely new glass storage jar. Lesson learned!

The one I'm still guilty of is transferring product to new container. This mainly happen when I want to try on new products. Nowadays with online shopping, sadly many brands still doesn't have sample size available. So a lot of online shops and e-commerce sites offer customer to buy 'share bottles', which is basically re-potting the product to smaller container to sell in small amounts. Not sure how common is this in the US or Europe, but in Asia I think it happens quite often. While of course it's not ideal, personally I still prefer doing this as it is economically better for me, rather than buying the whole tube of product only to find out I'm sensitive or cannot use it later on and wasting it. Though I usually only do this for cleanser products and rarely actives, which if it was compromise, at least it can be immediately washed off

I'm definitely guilty of this one and didn't think it was an issue. I mainly do it with toners/mists if they nozzle sucks, I'll put it into a bottle with a better nozzle on it. Sometimes I'll put a moisturiser into a jar with a pump instead of an "open" one.

Asian here and same. Though I'd be more careful to look for share-in-jar shops that mentioned and showed how they sterilize the bottled (with the UV/radiation sterilization equipment, hopefully). Though it may be a gimmick at least I've tried ಸ_ಸ

Oh no. I often put my products into travel sized bottles. 😱 I don't want to buy travel sized products again and again as I feel that's wasteful, and many products aren't available in travel size at all. Could you please do a video on the best, safest way to transfer product from one bottle to another or travel-friendly skincare in general?

I do this too! as long as the tools you use to transfer them are clean and so is the pot its not too bad. Stick to the same kind of packaging if you can, e.g. PET plastic container to smaller PET plastic container. I mostly do this for shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser etc as they have enough preservatives to be in a tub/ in moist conditions (and come in the biggest packages). But avoid skincare products in general as they are less stable, so anything in a pump, tube, or with a dropper shouldn't be transferred, but tubs you can usually be fine to do! I hope this makes sense :)

If you use any products from The Ordinary, save your bottles!! You can remove the droplets from the lids (or keep them) and use them for travel containers. These are great because they are made out of glass

I always do that, but it's usually shampoo, soap and it's only for a week or two. I hope that's okay. I wouldn't be bold enough to do the same with sunscreen or other cosmetic that tend to be more delicate.

@@ursulas332 true. I do it for lotions, moisturizers, and shampoos/hair products as well. All my serums and sunscreens are less than 3oz anyways so I don’t really need to transfer them to smaller containers :)

If it's for travel purposes, then I imagine it would be fine if you make sure to pour in only just enough to last you during your trip. The less time the product spends inside the foreign packaging, the less time it has to grow bacteria or interact with the package material. You also might want to upgrade your travel bottles if they're plastic. Instead, look for glass or silicone. Those are less likely to react with the product, as Michelle said, and they're also easier to keep clean.

I really like these liquid sunscreens because they dry so fast. You can layer within just a couple minutes and each layer is very thin. Even with a mineral formula the white cast is mitigated and it doesn’t feel too stuffy to wear under makeup. The mayo analogy is great! Though I’m always touting it’s use as an ingredient and not just as a stand-alone spread…if you break your dressing emulsion, try adding a bit of mustard!

Very informative as always! I wasn’t aware that some products could interfere with the packaging. I really hate dropper bottles and jars but I’ve always figured if it was preserved to be in a jar or dropper, transfering it to a reusable airless pump wouldn’t be an issue. And THAT will take me forever to finish, so hmm...

So good to know! I love your sciency explanations of what consequences doing these things have. Also, a question: in creams/gels in tub packaging, especially in kbeauty, there are usually these little spoons and spatulas for taking product out of the tub. Do you know the best way to use them without contaminating the product? Since putting the product on necessitates skin contact with that spatula, I always wash an air dry it after that, so that it's ready for next use - should I put it on a tray that I clean every time then, too, or is that too germ-phobic? Nobody I've seen ever talks about the cleansing or their storage situation when it comes to those things, so I've always been wondering 😄

On my products, I pick the packaging where I don’t have to dip my fingers since I personally don’t like having to dip my fingers in jars. I just use the squeeze tube and pumps. I also have a product that is in dropper bottle, but I have learned to not let the dropper touch my face or my hand.

Great video! You kinda covered it (but more in the context of diluting sunscreen)- the other thing I see people doing is diluting products with water and storing them like that e.g. Diluting hair conditioner/styling products with water and decanting the mix into a spray bottle - obvious the preservative system in the hair product isn't designed to cope with this! 🤦🏾

Yep, and the water probably isn't very clean. For hair the risk is lower since hair is dead, but if it gets on skin or in your eyes it could go badly!

I only use the dropper method for my ce ferulic serum because it costs me an arm and a leg..no drop will ever go to waste!! Plus it absorbs quickly and you basically lose half of it in your hands. But I don’t let the dropper touch my face... Ever.

Re: Repotting Products I have and still do this with jumbo size jars of products such as moisturizers. I use smaller empty containers or travel size jars of the same product for product transfer. When transferring the product, I am careful to use clean product spatulas. I do use spatulas for withdrawing product for skincare use. However, I am guilty of mindlessly dipping into my smaller jars with my finger. While I am generally OCD with regard to clean technique, I do understand that it is impossible to prevent ALL contamination unless one utilizes sterile gloves when applying products. I find that repotting to a smaller jar, suitable for the product, protects the overall product in the larger jars. That said, I respect the cautionary message against arbitrarily “repotting” into containers that may not be clean or conducive for storage of certain products.

I'm definitely guilty of saving sheetmask serum. I try to keep the risk low by folding and then clipping the top of the sachet and I always use them up the next day. But these sheet mask serums are just so nice and lightweight and help everything else absorb nicely...

I understand what you're saying about putting the dropper directly to the face. I have done this trying not to touch my face as I do so. That said, I imagine people touch the dropper to their hands/fingers which I would think carry more bacteria than the face. I often find myself putting dropper directly to my face because when i drop the serum/oil on my hands/fingers, I feel that a lot gets wasted as i move from hands to face, etc. Detailed response here but that has been my reasoning :)

This is very interesting with the microneedling. My dermatologist put a sheetmask loaded with fragrance on my face after the Dermapen session and while normaly I don't have a problem with fragrance on that occasion I got an irritation.

Your videos are so helpful and I do try to make ammendments after watching them. I had a quick question - I apply a fair of amount of sunscreen that is photostable. As I have extremely oily skin, the sunscreen gets too sticky on my skin. So I top it off with loose powder. Is that a good idea?? To apply loose powder on top of your sunscreen to avoid stickiness and oiliness??? I hope to hear from you soon

I always have two tubes of sunscreen. One is at home, the other is always inside my bag. I use the one in my bag more often (because of all the reapplication throughout the day), so when that tube has only less than half, I switch the tubes. Then I buy more. I find that this system works very well for me.

I was a Registered Nurse for many years including several in Maxillofacial (head and neck). I DO NOT recommend dermarolling at home by anybody - even with all my knowledge re sterile fields/procedures I don't do it. The risk is huge - infection is almost guaranteed up to and including necrotising fasciitis (which I have seen from something as minor as sustaining a cut falling in the bath). Just no. I really don't like the trend for DIY procedures all over the beauty social media tbh. The other things mentioned I have probably kept spf in too warm an environment a few times. The rest I'm not guilty of thankfully - gold star for me lol. Best wishes.

My skin is currently going through a rough patch due to running out of a medication and the doctors not being in the office when expecting (lots of snow storms). It was spironolactone, so I'm assuming the problem now is the overproduction of oil. The cystic acne is back, my pores are craters, and my skin is just overall in bad shape. Any advice for some relief while restarting the medication? I haven't had to do this much damage control in years, and I'm not sure what I should be doing to the skin when it's like this.

Great video, very interesting and entertaining too :-). I've been guilty of !) taking a hair mask out of the jar with my clean but wet fingers; 2) Mixing 2 products together. Not sunscreen with something else, but cream with lotion for example. I've been mixing Klairs' Supple Preparation All-over Lotion with their Midnight Blue cream. After the explanation here, I think I'll switch to layering the Midnight cream over the lotion.

I have mixed my sunscreen with a foundation. Never when going out for a long time but just when quickly putting something on my face and knowing I'll be out for 5 to 10 minutes. It is tempting because then you'll get a light coverage of foundation but getting some spf on too. Next summer I'll try to change this by first applying a layer of sunscreen in the AM routine, and later applying the second coat with the foundation spf mixture! I truly enjoy diluting a medium to full coverage foundation with a face spf, because it will drag on the face too much if trying to spread a small amount of high coverage foundation evenly on the face... I could apply with a sponge but I just love using my hands because they are easier to clean than brushes and beauty blenders.

Thank you so much Michelle for your videos! In one of your previous videos you mentioned from a study that wearing spf 50 for a particular sunscreen after about 4 hours was still spf 35. Do you think this may apply to most sunscreens that are of an spf 50? I was just thinking if I apply liberally and only sit at my desk I don't think I would have to reapply for about 4 hours and perhaps can save money haha.

I don't know - there's so much variation in sunscreen formulas and so little data that it's hard to make any confident predictions. In general I would think that if you're indoors and not close to a window, you don't really need to reapply until you're about to go out into the sun.

I was thinking of disinfecting an empty compact with alcohol then adding my SPF for easy application on the go. I'm concerned now it could affect the SPF of the product. Is it okay to apply powder on top of sunscreen? That way the oily cast goes away but I suppose there could be an issue with the brush picking up some of the sunscreen. What about using a stippling rather than wiping motion?

Thanks for a really informative video. Is it OK to mix a drop of serum and night cream in my hand rather than applying the serum first and then the cream? I apply this combo over tretinoin because the tretinoin I have is in a creamy base and applying the liquid serum over it seems like it could dilute the tretinoin whereas the serum mixed with the cream yields a less waxy feeling cream that feels like it is topping the tretinoin without diluting it. The serum has ceramides and omegas, the cream is a lipid barrier cream.
