I don't understand how they can say that there is an "only" face cream that works. I guess it depends on the definition of "works". Because I have found that glycolic acid reduces the appearance of lines on my forehead, azelaic and salicylic acid help prevent inflammatory responses to environmental stressors that cause my skin to flush, moisturisers stop my skin from becoming tight and dry, sunscreen prevents burning and cell damage. I think any skincare nerd would be like "huh" about the inclusion of peptides as an ingredient that will "work" for anti-aging. If we are taking a completely rational approach then really we should assume that they are mainly humectants. Using them for "anti-aging" seems to be more of a gamble. I would think that if we are talking about what "works" for "anti-aging" it would be sunscreen and tretinoin. Vitamin C isn't a drug so there is no sure way to confirm it works in any given product. Glycolic acid is more of a superficial fix for lines by thinning the stratum corneam but with consistent use surely that is desirable. Hydrated, exfoliated skin in general looks more youthful. And skin free of pigmentation also so really we could include the tyrosinase inhibitors as "anti-aging" that works. Peptides would be on my list probably, but not high up and I wouldn't prioritise high concentrations of glycerin

It also varies wildly between people. Vitamin C works really well for some people, and really helps them with things like lightening dark spots / hyperpigmentation. I've tried so many different formulations, and none of them have made any discernable difference, for me. Niacinamide, though, works fantastically for me, but some people notice little effect or even have adverse reactions to it. I've actually reversed a frown line on my forehead that was previously permanently visible. It's not, anymore. 🤨 I've also noticed that I don't have to work as hard to cover my enlarged pores! I don't know if it has actually "shrunk" them, because that's supposed to be impossible... but they've become less noticeable and much easier to smooth out with primer. 🤷🏻♀️ I don't know how or why, but it has done things for me that both retinoids and tretinoin, vitamin C, and all kinds of chemical exfoliants couldn't. I'm in Canada, so prescription tretinoin is actually less expensive than most mid-ranged retinoids, so I continue to use it. It does help me, but the changes caused by adding niacinamide to my routine have been profound! Considering that drugs of all kinds can have drastically different reactions when used by different people, it's not entirely surprising that skincare drugs (cosmetics, legally) work differently on different people, too.

The only medical grade skin care, is something that a doctors actually prescribes. No these products are no better than a good antioxidant skin care made with great ingredients that can actually help your skin. Many of these products are actually very intense for the skin. Dr Obaji for example made his products to be used before peels and facelifts and invasive procedures. They burn and lighten and many times the skin is overly abused. The skin is the largest organ of the body and we need to be gentle and natural. I hope this helped. Just some extra skin care love. 🍑Lisa Peaches Skin Care

There is no such animal as "medical grade" skincare. As Lab Muffin mentioned the categories for skincare are drugs or cosmeceuticals meaning they can be purchased without a prescription. That's it. In a short time (few months) I've seen a dramatic difference in the hydration level of my chest and shoulders, as well as faster healing time from glycolic peels (less redness). Another great video! I didn't watch the @AsapSCIENCE video. To be honest, I'm a bit sick of the beauty industry bashing videos, especially made by people who admit they don't use any cosmetics. Don't get me wrong, I am all for scientifically based, honest beauty marketing; but I feel there are so many other industries that use "green" or "clean" washing to sell products, that are never put through the wringer like cosmetics (health supplements, recyclable packaging, organic food etc). I also agree that there is so much more to a product than just the ingredient list. For example, I am useless in the kitchen. My sister however is a domestic goddess. Give us both eggs, flour, sugar and cocoa and I will give you brown mess - my sister will bake a glorious cake! It's another reason I don't watch channels like Hyram. Making videos that run through ingredients lists are not giving any useable or helpful information (unless you are allergic to something).

There are several "skincare channels" here on YT that depend on this and dismiss or praise a product mostly based on the order of appearance of a certain key ingredient on the list and it makes me cringe lol. Other than the explanation you mentioned, another situation where this ordering of ingredients is not exactly telling of the product is the Oat So Simple Water Cream, where the star ingredient oat extract appear at the the end of the list. Many people criticized the product because of this, but this was only because water was legally required to be listed separately from the oats. I wish more skincare companies were transparent in the concentration of their product ingredients and explained their reasoning for the inclusioj of these ingredients and the respective concentrations.

Thank you for this very detailed scientific analysis. I struggle with reading and analyzing the ingredient list since there's so much it doesn't tell you.

Without seeing the AsapScience video, I still found your information very helpful.

This is an excellent video and just goes to illustrate how even science people can have different interpretations but it takes someone with more study and experience in this subject matter to discuss the "truth" (per current scientific consensus).

Thank you for this video. Frankly a lot of their videos are poorly researched but they speak with authority that people don’t doubt. This causes a lot of misconceptions

Very useful video - as always! I've been using petroleum jelly for over 40 years for skin healing - first for myself and for the past 8 years for clients as a cosmetic tattooist. I found the study you refer to in your video very interesting and it's good to see the use of petroleum jelly backed up by clinical trials. In cosmetic tattooing there's a lot of marketing to "upgrade" to various new products for healing (usually based on grapeseed oil/hemp oil with various additions such as herbs etc (chamomile/arnica). One claim is that these new products "allow the skin to breathe and the oxygen aids healing" as opposed to petroleum jelly which doesn't!

I agree. I had many conversations here on YT from Cassandra and Hyram followers that are very close minded when i discuss formulation.

If I may? I'd add the main thing an ingredient list may help you do is avoid something you know you react negatively to. Which is still no substitute for patch testing! Lol, I think I care about that subject.😆 Thanks for this great post. I truly appreciated your very principled and professional approach to screening their vid. Be well ♡

Do you have a detailed video explaining the structure and basic functions of the skin? I love your videos because of your evidence based approach and your magnificent accent. I just keep wanting to see you pick up that skin anatomy model and tell me what it all means.
