Had an instructor teaching about a case study he had regarding a timing issues on an engine. He had one really good tip that I try when I feel it’s warranted. He said that after the engine sits for a few minutes, start the engine up and look at the cam/crank pattern while it was cranking and compare it to when it’s running. If the solenoid is stuck open, the timing will be in time or close to it while cranking and then when the oil pressure builds after it starts u can see the timing start to shift. Had this exact problem on a Honda 4 cylinder that showed out of time constantly while running and idled rough. During cranking I could see it was shifted several teeth over compared to while it was running. Tapped the solenoid a few times and then the engine began to run smoothly. Figured I’d pass this tip along since it helped me figure out a timing issue without removing the timing cover. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. You’re a top notch diagnostician👍🏻

Try checking the valve timing with the pressure transducer. That will give you an actual value without dealing with possible variables like a shifted reluctor wheel or inaccurate sensor inputs.
@nickmalone31432 жыл бұрын
Where would that be hooked up to ...and whats your base reference ?
@OzFrog48Z2 жыл бұрын
@@nickmalone3143 Pressure transducer measures cylinder pressure through spark plug hole similar to a compression tester. It graphs actual valve timing events on a scope. The results can be checked by looking up valve timing specs for that engine. Sometimes a shifted sensor ring or worn shaft keyway will give inaccurate sensor outputs to the pcm. Pressure transducer is 100% accurate. Takes a while to learn but is well worth it.
@eurbanautotech2 жыл бұрын
I'll second that. If I have a suspected timing issue (especially on a single cam engine) I always grab an in-cyl pressure waveform. I'll also throw in an ignition channel, an intake pressure pulse channel and an amp clamp for relative compression. I'll do cranking and running. It's a "go-to" test for me that I do so often it doesn't take me much time to set up. I'll do a quick glance at the capture to see if anything jumps out. Then, later in my diag, when I have a suspicion about what the problem is I can reference back to my capture, analyze it, and find the confirmation. That's one of the things I love about scopes. You can analyze a capture and find the problem even after the vehicle has left! Cool video! I dig the depth that you go into these. We don't get much hard data on how these systems actually work so the only way you can learn is by messing about!

That is also my guess! It’s hard to tell with the audio, but I think that motor is noisy, which may be a phaser bouncing around. A stethoscope would probably tell that story accurately. If no evidence on either of these fronts, i thinking dropping a pressure transducer down a hole would be my next move.

In a pushrod design with a single cam, I'm having a hard time seeing how a timing chain could stretch that much without breaking. Overhead cams have long chains, but in this engine the chain should be short. Is not the cam located just above the crank? No guides required? Also, how does a stretched chain cause a cam advance? I think I would look up how many teeth are on those sprockets to see if a chain jump could produce what you're seeing.

@bob11172 жыл бұрын
Retired mechanic here, when you first started the engine .....just from the sound from the engine i'm confident that there is excessive play in the timing chain ( chain has stretch due to wear, and yes we older mechanics can often tell whats happening with the engine just from the sound it is making :) you can hear the chain noise when the engine was running ) and or something is wrong with the chain guides/tensioners. This would throw off the timing. This vehicle does have about 114000 miles on it? has the original timing chain and it is well due for a change. Note: The FCA actually called a recall on the 5.7 Hemi (2009-2014 models ) on the timing chain guides. and you are correct, normally a worn chain or chain that has skipped usually will retard the timing, not advance. In any event, the timing chain, chain guides and chain tensioners should be replaced in this vehicle with this amount of mileage. I highly recommend you get OEM chain set, not some junk made overseas that won't last as long and of inferior quality. my 2 cents.

I have a 2014 ram 5.7 and he is right. The change oil indicator doesn’t come on till 10,000 or more miles. I let it do that the first time and only time. That is guaranteed to destroy your engine. Now it’s 5000 on the dot for me.

Great video. But the question is how's the snake? Hopefully outside or not moving anymore 😃

Judging by the color of the oil it seems that the owner isn’t doing regular maintenance.

My Tundra will be on a 10 000 km oil change schedule....I know how important clean oil is for the VVTi system. Recommended is 16 000 kms...fuck that shit...oil and filter is cheap compared to timing chain work.

Just pull the vvt solenoid and if it has metal shavings the motor is junk.
