My dog, Piper, had ACL surgery 3 weeks ago. She had her staples out after the 2nd week. After the surgery the doctor said her knee had a lot of damage and put her on a very strict recovery program. Today, 3 weeks after the surgery, she is still not putting her full weight on the leg. The doctor doesn't want her to exercise her leg until after 6 weeks. Starting with 5 minute daily walks. She is housed in a small room with no chance of jumping. She relieves herself using a leash to prevent her from running. I have had a dog and a cat with the same surgery. Their recovery was much faster but their knees were not as damaged as Piper's was or were as active as Piper was. Lesson learning: the amount of recovery time will depend on the amount of damage to the knee.

Just got our girl home this morning after surgery yesterday. How's your pup doing now after 11 days? Our vet wants us to walk her with a sling for at least the first week, which this video didn't show. So far she seems very apprehensive to go outside and hasn't pottied yet after 3 attempts in 4 hours and 2 bowls of water. Vet said she went at 730a and it's after 3p and still nothing. Just worrisome.

@@urracan she's doing pretty good now. Still limping pretty good but getting better every day. Definitely expect some poo issues. I think we were 2 or 3 days in before she pooped a little and a little over a week before she finally started getting back to normal. Good luck, it's a process.

May I ask how severe his injury was? Vet just broke the news to me that my dog has a little fluid build up, slight spur. Did your dog suffer a full tear? Or was this more preventative surgery

My frenchie is 6 years old, going on 7 in a few days, and had a surgery 3 weeks ago for a patella luxation grade 3, she cant jump/run/take the stairs for 6 weeks but since a week she's allowed to take 2-3 walks of 10 minutes a day. So far the surgery seems to have worked and we're very happy!! I hope it will be the same for your frenchie 😊

My 3 yr. old black lab/goldie had TPLO Surgery back on May 10. We had to use a sling for six weeks so as to keep him from lunging and nothing but backyard walks on leash for that time and still on leash everywhere he goes. Our surgeon is much more strict than any I have seen on line, no stairs for 6 weeks, couch, protected wood floors to keep him from slipping, confined to a small room, sling, sedation, no off leash, etc. It has been difficult but our doc has a 2 percent failure rate so there is that. Meanwhile, by next week he should be healed but we don't get another round of radiograms until 10 weeks. After that he will have the all clear but still will have to wait a bit before he can rough house with friends. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, this surgery is common but a big deal. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, dog or human!

Our female corgi just had her TPLO done last Friday and is already wanting to use that leg some only 5 days out. It’s great to see the progression of another larger dog. I guess we just continue with limiting her strenuous activity as we have been. It’s amazing to see how fast the recovery has been. She didn’t use the leg for the 4 weeks after her rupture prior to surgery.

@@EnochnKale she is 7 weeks PO from second knee yesterday. She is walking great and extremely happy. Next week is official post op visit with surgeon to examine both knees. We know the first, left knee healed great so hopefully she will be cleared fully next week. I sure hope so she can enjoy running around in yard before winter comes.

How’s your lab doing??? My 114lb rottie got it done this past Tuesday…. The most difficult part is he thinks he can go running and jumping already and he’s sooo strong! I have to keep him in a very short leash

@@EnochnKale she's doing great. Back to 100% and no limping. We had a very hard time keeping her calm the whole 8 weeks of healing time. She also tried to convince us she was back to normal on about day 3. We had to get very creative with puzzle toys. My biggest fear was reinjury before full healing. It's a tough journey you are going through, but worth the efforts. We were able to have a very active 2nd half to our summer with no issues. Best of luck!!

@@hobbymomma6 that’s our problem already. He thinks he’s 100% already and he is bored. We also never crate trained him like our past dogs so I’m having to keep my eye on him 24/7 with a leash on. The struggle is real and this is barely day 4! 😩🤦🏻‍♀️ So glad your dog is back!

@@keeganpony wow its been year now! no worries at all, your pup should get better every day. I do recommend restricting his activity to a small controlled space to avoid puppy jumping and some 3 daily short leash walks ( 10 mins max). Also physical therapy is super important to make a speedy recovery. Expect going back to normal in 8-13 weeks. Best of luck! 🐶

My dog Lissy had her TPLO 2 weeks ago tomorrow. She’s started to walk on it but also lifts it up and also limps on it. I had to put her cone on a bit more and plasters as she keeps licking the wound and it was looking red. I’ll send more photos to the surgeon to see what he thinks.

my 175 lb dane just had his 1st leg done on dec 1. he tore his acl and miniscus. has a plate 8 screws and a new wedge to replace the minisscus. if you have a big dog i HIGHLY recommend the help em up harness. makes the difference in him strugglling inpain getting up and not. since he has 2 bad legs it is worse. he has a lot of swelling still, day 5 - lots of sedatives and pain meds. 4 month recovery i was told for each one. so looking at the other leg being done in april. cost of a new car but he is worth it.

Awww. I hope his is doing much better now. Its expensive for sure, but like you said, they are worth it. My girl goes next week for her TPLO surgery. When the doc said $4k I just said when can we do it. My anxiety is off the charts. I just want my "lil" girl to be back to her old self.

Off leash after 2 months? WOW! The first surgeon I consulted said never off leash outside until sometime after 4 months. He said there is still the potential for re-injury if my boy (who loves to chase rabbits) pivots too fast or exerts too much torque on that joint before 6 months. I would certainly be tempted to allow him that much freedom, but I guess I'm just more cautions than some. Encouraging to see how fast your boy sprang back. My doggo is 88 pounds (a little chonky) but a densely built Pit-Shepherd mix. Avid hunter and crazy sprinter and all-around goofball. 5-years-old so middle age. Projected life span of 10-12 years. He's been such a faithful companion he is more than worth the cost of the surgery to provide the best quality of life for his remaining years. If anyone had told me I would spend north of $10K his first 5 years in vet bills, I would still do it all over. Thank God for pet insurance, eh.

How is your dog getting on now, we just passed the 4 week mark and the constant rest is proving difficult at times. She sounds similar to yours at week 3, walks well majority of time, holds it up when first getting out her crate.

@@teamtruth Thank you for asking! He started using the leg a couple of days later, and has increased on schedule since. We're missing our walks terribly. Only one day in the year leading up to the injury did we miss our walk to the park. The abrupt end to that has been hard, and he tries every time we go outside to head toward the park!

Hi Mike. As I told Dukesdad my dog Jasper's TPLO surgery and recovery went perfectly. He's running around again like nobody's business! Fortunately I was able to stay home with him the entire 3 months to ensure I kept STRICTLY to the vet's orders. VetSurg in Ventura CA performed the TPLO and I'm grateful every day for them giving me my healthy happy dog back. Just do what vet says. The hardest thing is stopping your dog from getting fussy and trying to jump. A Cage is a must really

I went to 4 vets. one said it’s muscle strain. one said it’s the ankle. Xray confirms the ankle bone is enlarged. The vet says he needs a surgery called “Tarsal Arthroplasty” Two other vets say it’s CCL and that TPLO surgery is recommended. They also say Xray indicates effusion and swelling in the knee. now, I’m completely confused. I don’t want my dog to have a surgery that he didn’t need, while the real issue is not fixed. Can CT or MRI help?

Ciao, ma come mai il mio cane non può camminare per un mese?

My belgian malinois has same surgery on his left leg,but how come hes still not moving and there is hole in his upper leg please some advice what we can do.

I have a cane corso,we are not allowed to walk more then 5-to maximum 15 minutes ,until week 13 ,after week 13 we see said the dr ,maybe because my fur baby it’s heavy(it’s on a diet)

Nice recovery. My boxer just got this surgery 2 days ago. He is walking with discomfort, but he is getting better. Hope he gets fully recovered like yours. Any tips? at the moment I'm battling with him not climbing stairs and jumping.

Did you guys allow your pets to (3 leg) roam the area as long as they wasn't running or jumping? Or did you keep them kenneled only to go to the bathroom, the first couple days after the surgery?
