How to Set Up Android Auto on Ford - FYF Episode 6

Off-and-on for 5 years I've been trying to get Android Auto to work on my 2017 Kuga (Escape in the USA), and now I've seen this I'll have another attempt tomorrow. What an incredibly long-winded and complicated set-up process. Thanks for the video, fingers crossed I can get it to work !

Thanks MooseNut12! That's a great question, yes Ford has been doing updates. Have you connected your vehicle to WIFI recently? Now it will automatically update itself for you. @@lacombeford Thanks - I was helping out a friend who has a 2013 C-Max Hybrid - We couldn't get the Android auto installed...not sure what version of SYNC he has, but I also think he needs a phone upgrade too (old Samsung).

@@rambr0vids no problem. They likely don’t have Sync3 and that is why it won’t work. If they have Sync 2 they may be able to get it upgraded at their local Ford store to activate Android Auto.

Picking up a 2017 escape w/ connect on Monday. Wish my phone was compatible with the Ford Pass app, as I had to pay extra for a remote start. Android auto will work for a lot of other stuff, & is ok for my phone. I have a question. When you plug your phone in for A.A., is it being charged as well? Thanks!

steel beel That's exciting about your new Escape. Yeah we have heard a few times now that some LG phones aren't compatible which is too bad. However, like you mentioned you will still have lots of cool functions through Android Auto! To answer your question, yes your phone will charge while plugged in :)

Seriously frustrated - have a 2021 Ford Transit Custom Trail and a Ford Puma 2020. Android Auto works perfectly fine in the Puma but will not work in the Custom. Samsung say nothing to do with them and Ford say the same...AA comes on for a second or two in the van then disappears and won't come back on - any ideas?

That is super frustrating! Are you plugged in to the USB port when trying to access Android Auto? Wondering if maybe the cord is faulty? Or are you trying to access via bluetooth?

@@lacombeford super frustrating! I've used the lead from Samsung direct. When it first is plugged it, all very briefly thr android auto screen appears on the dash, then goes off and I can't then retrieve it. No idea if it's a phone issue or the van, but as the phone works in trh car. It must be the van and I'm assuming there's something small in settings that keeps knocking it out?!

@@jasonmyer5196 looks like either the SYNC4a or the Android may need an update. That is what we found at the article we posted below. Otherwise, if you are nearby and can stop in, we could better help troubleshoot. hej...i have Ford Focus Titanium 2015 model it has Sync 2 i guess and i tried to connect it today and it said cannot connect or cord not connected from my phone!! i have new android so im not sure what im doing wrong...hope you can give me some tips thanks!!

Android Auto was not available for Sync2. It should allow you to charge a phone, and perhaps play music. Or, the cord is not fully plugged into the port.

Unfortunately, the Android Auto function is only available in SYNC3 version 2.0. However, we are anticipating that Ford will release an update for SYNC 3 that will bring everyone up to at least 2.0 early in 2017. jorge virguez We have been finding that the newer made 2016 models already have the update but the older manufactured 2016 don't have the update yet. We are hoping that in 2017 the full update will cover all 2016s.

I'm getting ready to purchase a 2017 Ford Explorer Sport. However, I don't want to use android Auto via Bluetooth because the audio quality sucks. Are you sure that you don't have to use Bluetooth to connect to it? So far everything I've read says hat it needs to be connected to Bluetooth.

Ok so after some digging we are certain you are right that once you connect to Android Auto it automatically uses bluetooth for phone calls but it still uses the USB cord for the music. This is how it is with all manufacturers with Android Auto because the system is designed by Google. However if you find the audio quality is not good for music you can always use the Sync 3 system to play the music instead of AA. The best thing to do is set it up on the Explorer you are interested in before making the commitment to buy, test out both Sync3 and Android Auto for playing music. I hope that helps! To use Android Auto, your phone must be compatible with SYNC 3, and be running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. You must also have the latest version of the Android Auto app downloaded on your phone and update other Google apps, for example Google, Google Maps, and Google PlayTM Music. We recommend you are connected to Wi-Fi when you download and update these apps. You will also need to enable Android Auto in your vehicle. To enable Android Auto, press the Settings icon in the Feature Bar at the bottom of the touchscreen. Next, press the Android Auto Preferences icon (you may need to swipe the touchscreen to the left to see this icon), and choose Enable Android Auto. Finally, your phone must be connected to SYNC 3 via a USB cable.

@@Zeek951 you may have to uninstall your android auto app and try reinstalling. Sometimes it can glitch. Otherwise, you may have to take it into a dealer or check if your Sync3 needs an update

I just purchased a 2016 (Escape), and it does not contain Android Auto, and Ford Customer Relationship told me the update has not been released yet for 2016 models. It should be available by the end of year 2016. If you guys ever figure out how to get it to install, I would love to know how you got it to work. My SYNC 3 is connected to my Wifi at home and is in range overnight. I am assuming that if the update was available, it would have already been installed. Also, I would be willing to manually update the system with a USB key, but I have not seen any new version of the SYNC 3 software available anywhere.

Hi Jean-Francois! Yeah, we have heard the same. What's interesting though is that we have some 2016 vehicles in our showroom that picked up the update already. We are thinking a proper release from Ford will come like you said at the end of the year. I'm going to investigate further, it may be that the "later year" 2016s have the update and the earlier year 2016s will get it with the upcoming official release. We will keep you posted for sure! Hey Jean-Francois, Connor Beavis here again. So after doing some research of my own I have found out that if your Sync version is 2.0 or newer then you will have Android Auto in your vehicle. If it is any other version for example version 1.0 or 1.1 then it is not available until Ford releases the software update and make it available to people. A way to check to see what version you have is to: -from the home screen press the SETTINGS button- then press the GENERAL button-then scroll down to the bottom-then press the ABOUT buttonAfter you hit the ABOUT button it will tell you what SYNC software version you have in your vehicle. This will work for all SYNC 3 systems in all Ford vehicles equipped with SYNC 3. I hope this helps and apologize for the length of this comment.

sagvan dusky not all SYNC3 programs are equipped with Navigation (it may not be a feature of your vehicle). You can plug your phone in using a usb cord and the android auto will work (if you have downloaded the app). The phone has to be plugged in.

The app is not on your phone? You have to be connected to the vehicle to see Android Auto (and you need the app on your phone)

The problem is that Sync3 v2.x ONLY works with old Android smartphones! For example, I have a Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge and Sync3 v2.x doesn't support it!!!! Same for the new Samsung Galaxy 8. So... unless you have a Galaxy 6 or older phone, AndroidAuto will NOT work with Sync3...

I appreciate that.... I have Sync3 v2.0 installed on my 2016 Ford Fusion Energi Titanium. Any idea when Ford will get around to supporting AndroidAuto on cell phones that are currently on the market (such as the Galaxy S7 or S8, or Motorola zPlays etc)? Sync3 only seems to support cell phone that are no longer sold and haven't been sold for the past 2 years!!!!

If you go to the Ford website below and choose a Sync3 vehicle (such as the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi), choose Verizon as a carrier, and then check "AndroidAuto", you'll see that only 1 model of HTC , 3 LG models, 1 Motorola model, and 2 Samsung models are compatible with the AndroidAuto application. Marlee C. Oh yep! Our apologies we assumed you were operating on a 2.0 or higher version. This is why it’s not available... Ford Motor Company will release the update but unfortunately they haven’t said when. If you drive a 2016 it should be soon and it will automatically update for you once its available.
