00:00 Lacoste Polo Shirt Introduction
The famous Lacoste crocodile is one of the most iconic logos in sporty menswear, and it’s typically associated with polo shirts, as well as luxury, in that regard.
01:05 History of Lacoste
Today, Lacoste is a big player in the polo shirt market, valued at around 2.3 billion US dollars. Even though they sell a bunch of different things, front and center is definitely their polo shirt.
Most Lacoste polos are made from a piqué knit, but they also have jersey knits and a t-shirt style material. They’re almost made out of 100% cotton, and there are some blends. If you want to learn more about the best polo shirt materials, our guide has you covered.
Lacoste Polo Shirt Review
We look at seven different Lacoste polo shirts, and all of them were 100% cotton, which is fairly the standard for the brand, at least in the US.
03:58 Material & Quality
06:58 Colorfastness and Color Range
07:20 Collars
08:10 Buttons and Buttonholes
09:35 Logo Detail
10:24 Construction
11:36 Shirt Pricing
12:35 Different Models
13:22 How do Lacoste Polos Fit?
In our experience, Lacoste's original polo, overall, quite small for American size. That being said, there are differences between the sizes. In terms of length, the classic is longer than the regular, which is longer than the slim.
While the Paris polo comes in a classic fit and a regular fit. It’s different visually because it has a hidden front placket, so you don’t see the buttons, and the collar is definitely smaller. Also, the famous crocodile logo is tone-on-tone, so it’s a little more subdued. And, personally, I’d rather have no logos on my chest, so I’d rather wear the Paris polo than their original one.
16:36 Other Styles Lacoste Offers
18:43 Pros of a Lacoste Polo Shirt
19:28 Cons of a Lacoste Polo Shirt
20:35 Is the Lacoste Polo Shirt Worth It?
First of all, figure out what you want out of your polo shirt. If you just want something to wear while doing your garden work or run around the house, maybe spending the extra money on the Lacoste branding is not justified. If you wear polo shirts regularly during the summer and enjoy wearing them, it can be a good contender.
The big questions, then, are: Does the polo fit you, or does it puddle weirdly? Or does it have weird wrinkles, and do you like the fit and the style, as well as the fabric they offer?
Do you want a polo shirt in just the basic colors such as navy or, maybe, gray? Then, you can go with other brands. But, if you want those special, unusual colors, I think Lacoste is really good.
When it comes to brands, here at Gentleman’s Gazette, we, generally, don’t put too much value or emphasis on that, and we rather look at the quality and the value, which is the quality to price ratio.

My father is still wearing his Lacoste shirt he bought 15 years ago, it holds up amazingly , both the collar and the color. My Lacoste polo shirts are barely a year old ( and I don't wear them all year round and have other shirts in my rotation ) and the collar is already floppy and I found a few loose threads.

That's because they used to make t-shirts from Egyptian cotton, but due to world wide competition they lowered the quality of their shirts, hence older shirts can't be compared to today's shirts.. they are way better

Bought a stack of Lacoste polos in various colors a few years ago, slim fit and regular fit. The form and fabric held up well, but the bolder and darker colors - like red, navy, black - have been fading out fairly quickly, way quicker than on most other clothes I own. I still have the white one and got rid of all the others. I can definitely recommend the Uniqlo Dry Pique's you're showing though, they have a good fit, are fairly wrinkle free, dry fast and so far they've been holding up well for me.

My father owned several Lacoste Polo's back in the 80's and I remember that they would last him for years. Nowdays, the quality has declined a bit, but it is still definitely above average. My Lacoste Polos last for 3 seasons on average. The colors holds up pretty well and they do not not fade easily, especially the lighter tones. Likewise, Lacoste Polos tend to maintain their shape. In comparison, a Ralph Lauren Polo that I got last year is already quite faded, and the material shows some wear on the sleeves and collar.

Purchased them since the late 60’s and the shirttail was always longer in the back. Once they started making in the USA during the 80’s the quality of knit changed and the shirttail went to one length.Clear knit Mills in Clover , SC made shirts in the late 80’s and early 90’s for Lacoste and they had an outlet store you could buy them for $12 each. Really pleased to see a Lacoste video, thanks! I own two of their polos. A lilac/pastel purple one which I bought from a Lacoste store in France and a vintage salmon pink Chemise Lacoste one which I also bought in France. The pink one says made in France but no info on the Lilac one. Personally, I love Lacoste classic-style polos but don’t care very much for any of their other gear. As a polo shirt fan, Lacoste and Fred Perry are legendary! I agree about the colours. I have seen very few tops in the same pastel purple/lilac shade. Mine is a size 2 (yes, I am that slim) and must be a slim fit although it does not actually say that anywhere. I am used to S/M/L sizing though and I find the number system confusing. It’s a silver croc 🐊 as well, which I really like. The Lacoste sizing suits me as I am slim and 175cm so don’t have issues with getting one to fit. I’m pretty sure it’s mother of Pearl buttons too - The only downside is that the top one (of 2) fell off after a relatively short period of time, which was disappointing considering the money I spent but it’s not really a problem as I wouldn’t button the top one anyway on that particular polo. I love it and it’s survived several wardrobe culls. I probably like it more now than I did when I actually bought it. The salmon one is probably from the 70s or 80s and has the croc 🐊 on the right sleeve with gold lettering as well as the logo on the chest. Not as versatile but I would guess it’s quite rare now. That’s held up amazingly well, still has all its original buttons and hasn’t really faded. That national geographic polo is horrendous and should be burned immediately!

We discussed the nuisance of the collars and how big manufacturers shifted away from a unique collar for specific sized shirts (S,M,L,XL) to one collar for S,M and another collar for L,XL. Check out his polos. They are a great deal. I’ve been wearing them for over 10 years.

Worked for Lacoste, they still have a factory based in Troyes, Champagne region, France that produces the knitted piqué fabric, and some polo shirts of the range. It is the main historical factory. Some small ateliers in France for premium small series, Greece or north Africa. And a factory in Peru for north american market. An interesting fact : French made Lacoste polo shirts quality has lowered since the 80's, partly due to marketing choices, but also due to ecological restrictions that forbid the use of strong chemical treatment of the fiber. Those chemicals and operations are still possible abroad, in Asia for example... In the past, the water of Troyes public fountain (using the water of the canal) were colored by the taint of the day. The water jets were often blue, red or green !

When I was in highschool a Lacoste polo would set you back $15-$18 at a discount store! Now is a different story! I love Lacoste and I play lots of tennis. It is outstanding for tennis because the pique knit absorbs sweat and breathes so well! The shirt is so durable! The colkar holds up and sits well under a classic blue blazer, which is how i sometimes wear my solid colored Lacoste knits. Izod is okay but they've become like a standard plain wardrobe "staple". Cheaper price for slightly above average quality. No and can beat Lacoste's pique knits, though. They are the king of pique knits, in my honest opinion!

Among my past casual wear one of the items I miss most are - what I called - their 'terry cloth' or 'terry' polos having textures similar to a good bath towel that Lacoste used to offer during the 70s though 80s (?) They combined Locoste’s classic crisp appearance with a soft hand. On hot days they dried readily while maintaining their bright crisp look. The colors, of course, were beautiful. I had a considerable variety. I tended to stick strictly to the solid colored shirts. All of which I either wore out or somehow lost track of over time. I found those terrys extremely comfortable and neatly attractive while maintaining an air casually relaxed. They even looked very nice a blazer along with either jeans or dress pants, sneakers or oxfords. Making them an excellent choice for casual workday wear as well as professional party gatherings. I’ve long hoped that either Locoste or Izod will re-introduce those someday. Though I’ still quite trim with only a barely noticeable paunch, I’m also much older and fear that I might soon regard them as inappropriate for my age should they reappear. NOTE: I seem to recall that, during my 20s, the croc logo was always green and I was wary of any that offered the logo in any other color (e.g. - blue.) I regarded them as being produced by bootleg operations. I’ve never been certain if that’s true or not.

I picked up a pretty cool one at Macys (was still on their site a couple of weeks ago on deep discount), and also if you search for PENGUIN TERRY CLOTH POLO they have a line with several colors. I haven't tried the brand, but I am going to pick one up soon. I'm getting a lot of compliments and smiles on the Macy's one. I am bringing terry cloth back baby, and I need more champions out there in the streets with me!

@@idcook Sure thing, my pleasure! Regarding the Macys one, looks like its gone up in price. I got it at around 35 bucks on sale at the start of summer, and I saw it on sale for 28 last week. Looks like its spiked back up to 48, but it has held up well over several washes. Search Weatherproof Vintage Men's Printed Terry Polo T-shirt if you'd like a look at that one in particular. I would really like to see more terry cloth with prints, but looks like solids are the option for the most part.

As an italian I can say they are great quality products and resistant. Still Made in France...both Lacoste and Fred Perry are really good polos. I suggest also Sebago or Timberland as boat shoes.

I’ve got a lot of Lacoste polo shirts. Mainly from their non-main line. There are differences with ribbed sleeves or not, shorter and longer sleeves, different buttons etc. I’ve got polos with collar stands. They’re all lasting very well. A lot more interesting than RL Polo. Less stigmatised to me than Fred Perry’s. Today I’m wearing a cotton linen mix and it’s beautifully comfortable.

I got one as a present in age of 15 and I wore it until age of 27. It was the longest living piece of clothing in my life. I bought some cheaper polos but I don't enjoy them after the Lacoste one. Now I have possibilities to buy it, so I plan to buy one or two for this summer

I have a dozen premium price, premium quality, Lacoste polo shirts of various colours, some of which are 10 years old. And they are worth every cent that I paid for them. As a simple example the covering of the shoulder seams not only retains the shape through numerous washes, but they still fit perfectly. I have a very large wardrobe of modern clothes and I spend most of my Business life wearing a shirt and tie with a Business Suit. But I always pack a couple of Lacoste polo shirts in my carry-on bag. There strengths are versatility and style. Phil.

I really like Lacoste. Best feeling polo on a hot summer day. However, I'm 6'5" and so I can only really pull them off when it's super casual (almost beachy). No way to tuck in. If they would be longer, I would save up and replace most of my $10-20 ones.

I got 3 for around $55+ and honestly they're pretty nice and good to wear in humid southern summers. I dislike weird patterns and stuff like a lot of companies do nowadays, so i mostly stick to solids, my limit is stripes. Overall, Navy is pretty nice to wear, along with the shade of turquoise in your video. The Bordeaux Red is kinda mid, but it's whatever. Besides that I mostly try to wear generic/wholesale polos. I also like unbranded polos/clothing too!

Pique is perfect for Indian summers. Love Lacoste down here. The one I got was made in my own country, India. (Which is defintely an expensive place to manufacture textile compared to SE Asia/ Latin America) To the best of my knowledge, the cotton must have been sourced in India as Indian long staple cotton is pretty high end material.

It's quite a comprehensive take, well done. One interesting fact about that brand here, in Portugal, is that it's associated with what we call "thugs", due to the shoes and fanny packs of Lacoste, so there's always the factor of the culture of the country or region. In the end, as you've stated in the past, it's better to go for quality items than brand items. Best regards,
