I once had a Lada Combi 1500 for 3 years and it never let me down, well, apart from the exhaust pipe once snapping in half which you may not believe it , I managed to fix it with a can of a well know brand of drink ( Very fizzy and tasty !) and some wire coat hanger long enough to have it repaired.!

The rear disc brakes were replaced as they picked up pebbles between the disc and stopping pad. So the replacement was an improvement. Lada's are still being used as Taxis in rural Russia so they must be dependable.

Ladas are not in fact used as taxis in rural Russia. Especially not of this kind. Maybe the Lada Sputnik (2109) as the oldest car that would be used for this, but certainly not the 2107.

I do remember not this particular car with square headlights but older ones with two round ones as well as two square ones that had 2 circles per headlight. It was Shesterka(a 6) and older 011 Zhiguli. I clearly remember how the car exterior panels were very heavy and only bendable when someone had a crash. Also very deadly in crashes due to ZERO safety features.

I do remember this from the 80s and 90s. People who drove soviet made cars did so only because nothing was available. Literally everybody knew they were garbage cars and were aware of it. Only later people began to have choices, but these old cars were being driven by people who couldn't afford better. Now some Russians feel unjustifiably offended only because they have some weird unhealhty nostalgia.

With reliable is meant that if it breaks down you can fix it yourself. And it will break down. Also they aren’t cheap. I got a beat up one because I’m too young for a licensed, so I bought an almost dead one from a neighbour for around 80 dollars. It’s fun but doesn’t really shift higher than second gear

Ummm, the rear brakes aren't made out of aluminum, the rear drums are aluminum lined with steel. The aluminum helps the while thing cool better...or so.the theory goes anyway. I fund my Niva brakes to be quite good actually and they are aluminum/steel as well.
