Hello HS, is it possible that you will try to start this old 6 volt Opel again this winter, on the coldest possible day? The sound of the 6 volt starter is so beautiful. Thanks so much. I wish you all the best for the new year. Greeting - Stella 🤗

Hello there, could I use the cranking fragments of your video for my coldstarting compilation? Of course I will put a link to your original video in the description, increasing the original’s popularity too. Thanks a lot for you answer in advance :) Took a while to get going, with that 20W oil it's probably a good simulation of what people went through back in the day, now imagine -35 or less in Siberia or North Europe =)

When you were jumping it off, does the donor vehicle need to also be a 6v system, or is it safe for a 12V system to jump it off? I've never had this particular question until watching your video. And it also seems that a 6V battery has more reserve to spin the engine than a similarly sized 12V battery. I've seen several long difficult cold starts with 6V systems, and none needed a jump, even though they turned over just like your opel. Am I correct (assuming a new-ish battery fully charged in very cold weather)? A couple of these engines even seemed to spin faster after a couple of long crank times,
@ladahs
@ladahs Жыл бұрын
They can take 12v for short time if the car has no electronics. This one doesn't even have a radio so no problem. I had problem with bad battery cut off, I removed that and got less resistance and it finally started. It would start faster if that switch would have not malfunctioned.

It is a general misunderstanding that the vehicles back then with a 6-volts-system had been such weak even when they were new. The electrical system of the shown vehicle is faulty and therefore in need of repair. Often the voltage drop is too high.

I'm glad you didn't rev the nuts out of the engine when it did eventually start like some idiot would have done which is very bad for a cold engine & is just asking for future trouble! That starter motor must have been on the verge of burnout by the time the engine started & interesting you boosted the 6v battery with 12v from another vehicle! Glad the dynamo is charging the battery well. Do you still have this car & is it still running please?
@karenbussell9839
@karenbussell9839 5 ай бұрын
It was obvious right from the start that the battery in that car was too weak to start the engine. So why didn't he put a new fully charged battery in there in the first place? After all that cranking, he decides to jump start it.

Hi, I also have a 64 Rekord. As I see in your video you're not running the original Carter carburetor. Since I've had quite some problems with mine, even after refurbishing it, could you tell me the brand/model you're using ? And does it fit without modifying anything ?
@ladahs
@ladahs Жыл бұрын
This carburettor is DAAZ-2105-1107010 Ozon and it is originally from Lada 1200. It worked really nice, but I still would suggest trying Weber 32/36 DGV. I bought some generic adapter for two barrel carburettor and installed carburettor relatively easy. Biggest problem was to modify throttle linkage to open both barrels completely. I am now back to Carter because I needed that Lada carburettor to my friends car. My Carter works.....well adequately. I will probably change it to Weber in the future.

No it doesn't. I use now 10W-40 or 15W40 But 20W50 is easily available with zinc additives and it is fairly cheap. And this car is never driven in the winter.

That is just a small 4 cylinder engine, it shouldn't be hard to crank. What is that gizmo you have on your "hot" cable clamp? My Chrysler New Yorker has a V8, and it's 6 volt system has no problem cranking the engine. An engine that is way bigger and way harder to spin than your little engine.
@ladahs
@ladahs Жыл бұрын
Well, first of all it is quite cold, mineral 20W-50 oil is more like grease. Cranking a engine with grease in it is so much more difficult than cranking in more warmer temperatures. Second thing is that battery cut off switch had too much resistance. I have driven 1951 Cadillac and it was very slow cranker even at summer temperatures and with new battery. 6V systems are sometimes like that. That gizmo was my battery cut off switch, which melted during this cold start.
@michaelbenardo5695
@michaelbenardo5695 Жыл бұрын
@@ladahs 20W-50 is NOT thick in cold weather. Straight 50 is what would be thick. It was probably that cut-off switch. The fact that it melted pretty much proves it. There is no way a small 5 cyl can be hard to crank. My Chrysler is a V8 and it doesn't do that, the cars on the road when I was a kid were 6 volts and they didn't do that.
@ladahs
@ladahs Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbenardo5695 20W-50 gets thick when temperatures go down. Put some of it in the freezer and let it sit overnight and you will see. Straight 50 is totally unusable in winter. If there was 10W-30 or 5W-40 it would spin over much easier.
